01:01Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:03I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:06We begin with Denise.
01:11The Venezuelan government on Monday activated the zone of peace number one in the state
01:26of Tashira and Zulia along the Colombian border to fight organized crime and tackle drug trafficking
01:32routes.
01:33During a press conference, the Minister of Interior Justice and Peace of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello,
01:39unveiled President Nicolás Maduro had ordered deactivation together with a large operational
01:45reinforcement of the ongoing crime-fighting operations in the border regions.
01:50The deployment, which is already underway, includes 15,000 men as well as aviation and
01:55fluvial equipment.
01:57In this regard, Cabello stressed Venezuela is answering in force to those intending to
02:02enter drugs to the territory, effectively seizing 52,769 kilos so far this year.
02:10In this context, he asked the Colombian government to do the same to ensure peace and halt criminal
02:16operations in the border area.
02:23We don't sell any kind of drugs here.
02:26That report also says that Venezuela is free of any laboratories, which means that Venezuela
02:31does not process any kind of drug from the harvest to the final product for the final
02:39consumption.
02:42The UN report also says that traffic through Venezuela is also very, very limited, which
02:49are the three conditions to consider if there is drug trafficking in a country.
02:59In this context, the Minister of Interior of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, announced the
03:04activation of the Zone of Peace No. 1 in the states of Tachira and Zulia in a coordinated
03:09effort with the Colombian state.
03:11So we asked the Colombian government, with whom we have been cooperating, that we call
03:18on them to do the same on the Colombian side, to safeguard peace in the area, to evict those
03:28that want to settle there to commit crimes in the border area.
03:34This announcement, we doubt, will echo, will have an impact on peace and security.
03:42And peace is the main principle of Venezuelans.
03:49The Venezuelan people enlisted in mass and voluntarily in the Bolivarian National Malaysia responding
03:54to President Nicolás Maduro's call to defend their country from a possible United States
03:59invasion.
04:00See that report by our colleague Bruno Falsi.
04:02In the city of Rio Caribe, in the state of Sucre, fishermen mobilized and went to the
04:09Enlistment Center in a show of unity to defend the sovereignty of their country, threatened
04:14by the new invasion from the United States.
04:17The fishermen are deploying to provide strong support to the guidance of our commander, President
04:28Nicolás Maduro, in light of the actions taken by the North American government against our
04:35homeland, which has decided to put a prize on the head of our president.
04:40We are here to defend our homeland.
04:45Here we are in defense of our people, supporting our President Nicolás Maduro.
04:51We fishermen are answering the call of our President to defend our country.
04:56Fishermen arrived from our regions in fishing boats and organized a war protest in solidarity
05:03with President Nicolás Maduro, demonstrating the strength of people power.
05:08We responded to the call of President Nicolás Maduro because we felt attacked and aggrieved.
05:15We fishermen are here and all we want is to continue working and advancing the development
05:23of this country.
05:25We see all well.
05:27We have coastal vigilantes here and we don't want any intruders from another country to come
05:33here to Venezuela.
05:34We don't want anything to do with gringos, we want to work in peace because we are Venezuela
05:39and Venezuela is free.
05:41Organized fishing youth also came out to enlist in defense of their participatory democracy,
05:48which they had so ardently won.
05:50Today we are here as youth fishing.
05:56We are in the activity enrolling all fishermen in the militia as we are guided by our President
06:02Nicolás Maduro.
06:03Guidance from which we reject as young people all these sanctions by this North American Empire,
06:08saying that here is a loyal conscious community, Venezuela is a place of peace and we are willing
06:15to continue defending our country as necessary.
06:18A resounding response from the Venezuelan people to the USA as people massively attended various
06:25enlistment points throughout the country in a demonstration of national unity to defend
06:31their revolution.
06:32In the camera of German Medina, Bruno Falci, Caracas, Venezuela for Telesur.
06:39Now we go to Mexico, where authorities seized 1.5 tons of cocaine in two joint operations.
06:45The seizures occurred during two separate operations coordinated by the Secretary of the Navy,
06:51CEMAR, the Secretary of National Defense, the Attorney General's Office and the Secretary
06:56of Security and Citizen Protection.
06:58CEMAR informed the press that 30 packages were detected floating near the coast of Acapulco
07:04during its maritime and aerial surveillance patrols. An inspection revealed that the packages,
07:10which were wrapped in plastic, contained 900 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to be worth
07:17more than $11.6 billion. Federal agencies seized another 600 kilos of cocaine when they detected
07:24a boat with four crew members sailing off the coast of Guerrero.

08:03Following the increased strengthening of cooperation between Beijing and the region,
08:08the Chinese government has warned that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean
08:12are not anyone's backyard. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Huo Yacun said that
08:18relations between China and Latin America do not involve third parties. He urged the United States
08:24government to stop trying to disrupt cooperation by causing discord. Yacun explained that
08:30developing bonds with Latin American countries has boosted various economic and social sectors
08:35at the local level and has been well received by the countries and peoples of the region.
08:40In other news, the United States government is threatening to increase its military presence
08:51in cities led by Democrats. President Donald Trump threatened Baltimore following a dispute
08:57with Maryland's Democrat Governor Wes Moore. Moore had criticized Trump's unprecedented use of federal power
09:04to combat crime and homelessness in Washington. And furthermore, Governor Moore emphasized that
09:10his state's crime-related measures, as well as Trump's federal courts, have impacted Maryland.
09:16Following Trump's threat, Illinois Governor Junior Robert warned that Trump's goal is to incite fear in
09:23communities and destabilize public safety measures to justify further abuse of power.
09:29In the United States, citizens rallied to protest against heavy police presence on the streets of
09:42Washington, D.C. Citizens expressed the rejection of President Donald Trump's decision to deploy
09:47federal police and the National Guard. A recent survey conducted by George Mason University in Virginia
09:53found that approximately eight out of ten residents of the U.S. Capitol opposed these actions.
10:00Witnesses report the presence of armed federal agents during police raids without the required court order.
10:06More than 30 million people in the western United States are on alert due to a persistent suffocating heatwave.
10:33Warnings have been issued for most of California, Oregon, Washington and the southwest desert, where temperatures have
10:41approached record highs. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Phoenix and Tucson could reach
10:4843 Celsius degrees, creating dangerous heat conditions. The affected areas are expected to start cooling down on Tuesday,
10:56although firefighters, tanker trucks, helicopters and other resources will remain on alert in case of emergencies.
11:03Wildfires continue in the United States, with the wide regions of California and Central Oregon being the most affected areas.
11:18During the night, a considerable increase in the flames was reported, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.
11:25In Napa, California, the Picket Fire has destroyed more than 26 square kilometers and so far, only 11% of it has been contained.
11:36Other communities in Northern California and Central Oregon are also at risk with the flood fire near Sisters, Oregon.
11:44Due to the emergency, more than 1,200 firefighters backed by helicopters and scavengers continue to fight to control the flames.
12:01Meanwhile, in Spain, firefighters continue to battle blazes in the region of Castile de León and León due to high temperatures.
12:09The heat wave that has been sweeping the country since the beginning of August is hitting cities like Oporto and Engina,
12:16with temperatures going over 40 degrees Celsius. The Spanish Civil Protection Agency reported that at least 15 forest fires remain active.
12:24Most of these have been contained. Although the situation still requires additional efforts, according to data from the European Forest Fires Information System,
12:33the fires burned more than 403,000 hectares of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain alone and more than 278,000 in Portugal.
12:52In Pakistan, more than 3,000 people were evacuated due to flood risk from monsoon rains hitting Punjab province.
12:59A spokesperson for the emergency services said that since August 23, evacuations are underway while extensive areas of farmland remain flooded.
13:09The National Disaster Management Authority added that these latest floods are the result of the monsoon rainy season.
13:17Since July, the death toll has risen to more than 800 people throughout the country.
13:22Meanwhile, national meteorological agencies warned that heavy rainfall will continue until mid-September, increasing the likelihood of a humanitarian catastrophe.
13:32In China, strong winds and torrential rains were reported as Typhoon Kajiki made landfall across Hainan Island and the nearby regions of Guangdong province, leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents.
13:53Authorities reported that approximately 20,000 people were evacuated from areas considered high risk, while more than 21,000 fishing boat crew members returned to land.

14:41Final topic, don't go away!
15:05Welcome back to From the South. An Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza Strip killed 20 civilians, including five journalists, bringing the number of media workers killed by Israel to 245.
15:29The attack occurred while the journalists were covering a press conference near the hospital.
15:34The journalists were identified as Hossam al-Masri, photographer for the Reuters agency, Mohamed Salameh, photographer for Al Jazeera,
15:44Moaz Abu-Taha, journalist for the U.S. Network NBC, Ahmad Abu-Aziz, journalist with Quds Feet Network, and Mariam Abu-Daka, media contributor for Independent Arabia and the Associated Press.
15:57According to the statement, the attack, which caused death and injuries, including emergency personnel, was part of the Israeli regime campaign to silence journalistic coverage and therefore hide their crimes.
16:09The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, condemned the killing of five journalists during Israeli bombings south of the Gaza Strip.
16:22The resistance movement called the killing of the journalists a war crime and a massacre committed by the Zionist forces.
16:29According to Gaza and authorities, the total number of journalists killed by Israel since October 2023 had risen to 245.
16:39On the other hand, the United Nations described the military incursion into the Gaza Strip as a collective punishment against the Palestinian people.
16:46In Palestine, ten prisoners were taken to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital after being released by the Israeli occupation forces.
17:02Health authorities said the prisoners are in poor health with clear signs of abuse.
17:07All ten were released from the SDE Timan prison and handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
17:15The action coincides with the United Nations' denunciation of systemic starvation affecting more than half a million people in the Palestinian enclave.
17:24The United Nations' relief and works agency for Palestinian refugees in the Near East, Director Philip Lazzarini urged Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Aranyahu to stop denying the hunger and allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip.
17:45And former European Union's foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell called for legal actions in the face of the bloc's passivity over the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.
17:55According to the former European Union high official, the regional bloc's inactivity will continue to undermine Europe's credibility in its commitment to human rights issues on the international stage.
18:06Borrell affirmed that the bloc's institutions are not taking a decisive stance in the face of the ongoing massacre in the Palestinian enclave
18:15and are only limiting themselves to promising measures that are not being fulfilled.
18:19The European Union's former top diplomat said that adopting legal measures is not a political option but a legal mandate set out in European treaties.
18:28He also warned that failing to do so could imply a political and administrative responsibility.
18:43In this context, thousands of people protested in Denmark to demand an end to the aggression and recognition of the Palestinian state by the Danish government.
18:53The march, which attracted a large crowd, was held peacefully reflecting the growing movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people across Europe.
19:02The demonstration was attended by over a hundred social and trade union organizations, political parties and groups of artists and activists.
19:11The event was supervised by the police and those present reaffirmed their commitment to non-violence and lasting peace in the Gaza Strip.
19:18Iranian Foreign Minister Sajid Abbas Zaragishi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelati met in Saudi Arabia and exchanged views ahead of the start of the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, in Jeddah.
19:40At the meeting, the two ministers discussed recent bilateral, regional and also international developments, particularly the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza due to the ongoing siege in the Enclave.
19:52Both Foreign Ministers emphasized the need for immediate and effective action by Islamic countries to stop the genocide and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
20:03In other topics, the Russian government confirmed the new exchange of war prisoners with Ukraine.
20:25The humanitarian agreement brokered by the United Arab Emirates allowed the return of 146 Russian soldiers in exchange for the release of 146 Ukrainian soldiers of war.
20:37According to the official statement, the recently repatriated Russian soldiers are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving the necessary medical and psychological care.
20:47In addition to the military personnel, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the return of eight citizens from the Kruks region who had been illegally detained by Kyiv.
