During a "Fighting Oligarchy" tour stop in Iowa on Friday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) claimed Elon Musk's donations to President Trump's campaign allowed him to assume his role as special government employee.

00:00But oligarchy, oligarchy, my friends, is not just economic power.
00:06It's not just the kleptocracy that Trump is showing us, making his family wealthier because of his presidency.
00:15It goes beyond that.
00:18And that is, right now in America, and again, I don't care if you're a conservative or a progressive,
00:23I would hope that we can all agree that the current campaign finance system is corrupt.
00:41And what that means is that as a result of this disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision,
00:49we now have a situation, and not a whole lot of people are aware of this.
00:52You know, you have an election, people are running for office, but if you are a billionaire,
00:58what you can do is set up a super PAC, and you can spend as much as you want in that super PAC
01:04to support the candidate you like or defeat the candidate you don't like.
01:09So just a few examples, a few examples of how obscene this corrupt campaign finance system is.
01:19Elon Musk himself decided he wanted Trump to win.
01:22He decides to spend $270 million to elect Trump.
01:33$270 million.
01:34And of course, when you put that much money into somebody, you get your payback.
01:39His payback was the right to become the most powerful person in government for a number of months.
01:46And he was able to exercise his extreme right-wing ideology.
01:51And that is to lay off, fire some 7,000 employees at the Social Security Administration.
02:00To threaten to lay off over 80,000 employees at the Veterans Administration.
02:10To break the federal unions so that workers there lost their union representation.
02:19And to lay off tens of thousands of federal employees.
