29:06I'm not so sure I trust the rhythm method anymore

29:16To see me about some contraception advice
29:18But she's also an expert on the menopause
29:21On average women Sue's age should be showing signs of the menopause
29:26But when you've had 22 kids all bets are off
29:29I feel like I should really be hitting the menopause now
29:33So I just want to know what is going on with my body
29:35So I'm Kath Munro I'm a GP and I've come to talk to Sue about menopause
29:40Every woman has their own experience
29:43You know I guess my immediate thoughts are that's a lot of children to have had
29:47And a lot of changes in hormones over time
29:49And it's just so important that women have people to talk to
29:52Catherine knows everything
29:54In my job looking at lots of down below bits
29:57And I mean everything
29:59The flappy bits
30:00Things go from being pink and fluffy
30:01To white and crispy
30:03That there is to know about women's bodies and their menopause
30:07Well 50 tomorrow so
30:09Which is why Catherine's here
30:12So menopause we make a diagnosis of it
30:14By it being a year after your last period
30:17Yeah
30:18What we know is you know 51 is the average age of menopause
30:21But then there's this build up time
30:23Perimenopause
30:24And perimenopause tends to last 5 to 7 years before that
30:28Right
30:28The hormones that have been quite rhythmic
30:30Go into this kind of bit more of a roller coaster
30:33Where things are up and down
30:34Some months you might not ovulate
30:35My monthly cycle is still bang on 30 days
30:38What are the other symptoms of peri then?
30:41There are so many symptoms
30:42From a bit of hair thinning
30:44To dry skin
30:46To dry eyes
30:47Dry mouth
30:48Musculoskeletal
30:49Kind of aches and pains and things
30:50Tummy upset
30:51Bladder changes
30:53Brain fob
30:54A lot of women will mix up words
30:56Forget stuff
30:57I've never really suffered with that really
30:59No

31:01Noel might disagree
31:01But I'm not sure any of that applies to me to be honest
31:04No comment
31:07With it looking unlikely that Sue has entered menopause
31:11If your periods are still quite regular
31:12And nothing's really changed yet
31:14Then you know
31:15You're probably still having that proper swing of your hormones
31:17Each month
31:18It's time to address that other matter
31:20That's the coil
31:21From a doctor's perspective
31:23It's just the best contraception
31:25If you've had 22 babies come out through your cervix
31:27Then I think a coil should go in okay
31:29I brought you some books as well
31:31Me and my menopausal vagina
31:33It doesn't sound like you need it for now
31:35But there's one outstanding question Sue's been desperate to ask
31:40Both me and my friend
31:42We have quite a lot of children
31:43My friend's got 10
31:44Okay
31:44We were having this conversation
31:46We were kind of saying
31:47If you've had quite a lot of children
31:49And you've not ovulated as much as somebody that's maybe had one or two
31:53Is that something that can delay menopause?
31:55It might be
31:57There is something that I read that said
31:59For women that have three pregnancies or more
32:02You're more likely to have a later menopause
32:05It does make sense
32:07You've kicked out less eggs
32:08Because you've been pregnant quite frequently
32:11We've all got a number of eggs that we produce in our lifetime
32:15Obviously you'll have used less of those
32:18And so in theory I guess you might not
32:20Go through menopause till later
32:22Yeah
32:22I mean most women have gone through menopause by 55
32:25But then you're not most women
32:27And maybe you'll still be having periods into your 60s
32:30I hope not
32:30Right

32:35I really did expect to be going through the menopause at my age
32:39But I might be the oldest one taking birth control at this rate
32:42Right now Sue has a more immediate concern
32:45I'm turning 50 tomorrow
32:48Am I anxious? Yes

32:53Has anybody planned anything?
32:55So I might just stay in bed all day

43:51but to be honest this is me here with my amazing family
43:55it's all that I've ever had and it's all I'll ever need
43:59it's incredible that she's 50
44:02when you think what her body's been through
44:04giving birth 22 times
44:07but she looks bloody amazing
