Five dead in New York tour bus crash as NTSB looks at seatbelts and other factors

Transportation safety officials said on Saturday, August 23, they are examining what role seatbelts, the absence of a back-up driver, and road conditions may have played in a tour bus crash in New York that killed at least five people and injured dozens of others.

The bus, carrying more than 50 people veered out of control and rolled over on an Upstate New York highway on Friday, August 22.

The accident took place on the New York State Thruway, in Pembroke, New York, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Buffalo, while the bus was en route from Niagara Falls to New York City, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Tom Chapman said.

The NTSB has dispatched a team to investigate the accident and are expected to spend several days at the site of the crash.

00:00For reasons yet to be determined, the motor coach departed the travel lanes near mile marker 404 and rolled over.
00:09It first veered left into the median and then moved rightward back across the travel lanes, rolling over off the right-hand shoulder of the highway.
00:21As a result of the crash, multiple occupants were ejected from the motor coach.
00:26It has been reported to us that five motor coach occupants were fatally injured.
00:34That's five that were fatally injured, according to the reports we have received.
00:39Numerous other occupants were injured, some very seriously.
00:43They were transported to area hospitals for treatment of various injuries.
00:48We don't know the details yet about the tour arrangements.
00:52My understanding is there was only one driver on board.
00:55There was a driver and a tour guide.
00:57I don't know the details yet about the driver, the characteristics or the nature of the driver's arrangement.
01:04That will be part of what we look at in the investigation.
01:06We had an opportunity to look at the bus today.
01:09The bus does appear to us, it's in bad shape, but it does appear to us that the bus was equipped with seatbelts.
01:17So part of our investigation will be to determine the extent to which seatbelts were being used and the extent to which the lack of seatbelt use may have been a factor in some of the passengers being ejected.
01:29I think that's something we're still determining, correct?
01:32Do we know whether there was a camera in on the bus?
01:34There was a camera recovered from the scene.
01:36We still have to look at the camera and the video footage and determine whether or not it was actually related to this bus itself.
01:45That's the sort of evidence, by the way, that we find very valuable, but we don't know yet whether we have that in this case.
01:51That's still early.
01:52My understanding is that the tour company has been cooperative.
01:55I think I'm correct, right?
01:57The tour company has been cooperative.
01:59Whether we'll have an opportunity to interview the tour bus driver has yet to be determined.
