00:00Do you have control over your life or are you just a puppet?
00:02Are your choices really your own or are they predetermined by your genes and environment?
00:07This question has been debated for centuries.
00:09Philosophers have argued about it, theologians have weighed in,
00:12and now neuroscientists are trying to settle the matter.
00:15And they may have just discovered that the secret to free will lies in the connections between our brain and our spine.
00:20Hi!
00:20And welcome to my channel.
00:23Today we're going to talk about free will.
00:25Do you have it? Do you not?
00:27Is it an illusion?
00:28Does it feel like an illusion sometimes?
00:31Let us know in the comments.
00:33The question of whether or not we have free will is a surprisingly difficult one to answer.
00:37On the one hand, if our every move is dictated by our genes and our environment,
00:41then free will is just an illusion.
00:43We are, in fact, just really complex puppets.
00:47On the other hand, if we do have free will,
00:50then our brain must be capable of making decisions independent of our genes and our environment.
00:54But such independence seems highly unlikely.
00:58After all, everything in our bodies, including our brains,
01:02are physical entities governed by the laws of physics.
01:05Our genes, the environment, our experiences, everything is connected and nothing exists in isolation.
01:11Now, it might seem that this question doesn't have much of a real world bearing.
01:16After all, what difference does it make whether or not we have free will?
01:21Well, it turns out that the answer has some pretty profound implications.
01:25If we don't have free will, then notions of moral responsibility and justice become somewhat problematic.
01:30If we do have free will, then we have to rethink our understanding of the brain and the universe.
01:34So scientists have been trying to get to the bottom of this question,
01:38and they think they may have made a breakthrough.
01:40A team of researchers led by neuroscientists Raphael used at Columbia University in New York,
01:47used advanced neuroimaging techniques to map the connections between different parts of the brain and spinal cord.
01:54They wanted to see if there were any neural correlates of free will.
01:59That is, if there was any activity in the brain that correlated with the ability to make decisions independent of the body.
02:04And what they found was that there is a network of neurons that connects the brain to the spinal cord via the brains.
02:10This connection is active during both voluntary movements and when we're making decisions.
02:15But what's more, it appears to be active up to one half second before the movement or decision is made.
02:20This finding suggests that the spinal cord may play an active role in the decision-making process,
02:25which in turn suggests that free will may be an illusion.
02:28In other words, our decisions may be made by our bodies, not our brains.
02:35The researchers say that their findings have profound implications for our understanding of the brain and the universe.
02:40If their interpretation is correct, then free will is an illusion and determinism is real.
