00:00Why do all the planes flying over the Atlantic choose this specific narrow path?
00:04Look, it's a really crazy bunch of planes,
00:07moving along an invisible highway in perfect order on parallel paths.
00:11But why is that?
00:12Well, firstly, this is the shortest way between the USA and Europe,
00:16and secondly, there's an actual highway in the sky called the Jetstream.
00:20Jetstream is a powerful air current that moves from west to east.
00:24It saves fuel and makes flights shorter and less turbulent.
00:27That's why flights from the US to Europe are usually faster than in the opposite direction.
00:32But how do they avoid collisions, especially since radars don't work over the Atlantic?
00:37You see, it's all handled by the North Atlantic tracks.
00:40Since jet streams are constantly shifting, experts analyze a lot of data every day
00:44and literally create tracks for the planes.
00:47As planes approach these tracks, pilots request permission to enter them.
00:51Air traffic controllers, based on all the requests,
00:54optimally schedule the planes by setting speed, altitude and distance,
00:58which makes flying so safe.
