00:00Journey to the West, Chapter 53, The Man in the Canoe.
00:11From behind Guan Yin, Wukong peeked at Red Boy.
00:15The demon was trapped by the swords, all pointed at his face.
00:20Get these swords away from me, cried the demon.
00:23You must become a Buddhist, said Guan Yin.
00:26Then I'll release you.
00:28I promise, cried Red Boy.
00:31I'll do whatever you say.
00:34Guan Yin recited a spell, and the swords vanished.
00:40Red Boy's eyes flashed with anger.
00:45Bodhisattva, watch out, cried Wukong.
00:48Red Boy charged toward Guan Yin.
00:53Wukong jumped in front of him.
00:55The monkey was about to strike the demon when Guan Yin held up five metal bands.
01:02She threw them at Red Boy.
01:06Instantly they clapped around his head, wrists, and ankles.
01:11Evil demon, said Guan Yin.
01:14How dare you try to attack me?
01:17Unable to move, Red Boy glared at Guan Yin.
01:20Wukong raised his iron bar to strike him.
01:25No, Wukong, said Guan Yin.
01:28Don't hurt the demon.
01:30I will take him back to Mount Potolaca to be my student.
01:36Yes, Bodhisattva, said the monkey.
01:40Guan Yin took the vase down to Earth.
01:42She recited a spell, and all the water flowed back into the vase.
01:56She then led Red Boy toward the south.
01:59Wukong went into Red Boy's cave and freed the Tang monk.
02:06Then he found Ba Jae and freed him.
02:09The three of them went down the mountain and found Wu Jing.
02:15The group continued west.
02:18They traveled for weeks and then months.
02:20One day they came to a wide river.
02:26I can't believe we have to cross another river, muttered Ba Jae.
02:32There are many rivers between here and the west, said Wukong.
02:36We'll have to cross them all.
02:38How will we cross this one, asked the Tang monk.
02:42A small canoe came into view.
02:45A man paddled it toward the travelers.
02:47As the man paddled, he stared at the Tang monk.
02:54Greetings, called the man as he came closer.
02:58Do you all need a ride across the river?
03:01Yes, said the Tang monk.
03:04We were just wondering how we would get across.
03:07We're going to the west to get scriptures from Buddha.
03:10You must be the Tang monk, said the man brightly.
03:14I've heard you would pass through this area eventually.
03:17Really?
03:19Asked the Tang monk.
03:22Yes, said the man with a smile.
03:24You're famous.
03:26He glanced down at his canoe.
03:29I would be happy to take you all across.
03:32But as you can see, my canoe is not very big.
03:36I can take only two passengers at a time.
03:38As the man talked, Wukong watched him carefully.
03:44Something about the man didn't look quite right.
03:48The monkey was about to say something when Ba-Jae stepped forward.
03:52The Tang monk and I will go first, said the pig.
03:56Wukong hesitated.
03:58Master, I don't think this is a good idea.
04:00The Tang monk frowned.
04:04You never trust people, Wukong.
04:06This kind man is willing to help us cross the river.
04:11The monkey bit his lip as the monk and Ba-Jae climbed into the canoe.
04:15They sat down, and the man paddled away from shore.
04:23Wukong watched the canoe glide across the river.
04:26When it was about halfway across, Wukong noticed something.
04:30Am I imagining things, or is the canoe sinking?
04:34Asked the monkey.
04:36Wujing looked.
04:38You're not imagining things, he said.
04:41It is sinking.
04:43The two of them watched as the canoe slipped under the surface of the water.
04:48Wukong stamped his foot.
04:51That man kidnapped Master and Ba-Jae.
04:54I knew he looked suspicious.
