00:30If you're going through Rush, you're going to want to get on my radar.
00:34Rush is the process where sororities recruit new members.
00:38I have had house back-to-back.
00:41I'm just like a sweaty mess.
00:44We're talking multiple outfits, interviews, open houses.
00:47To prep for Rush is a whole process.
00:51I think she's starting to panic.
00:52I might want it more than Emily.
00:55Put that phone down, fucking shoot.
00:57Behind every girl going through Rush, there's a mommy right behind her that wants to be as bad as she does.
01:02Hidey-tiny!
01:03I feel like we're rushing together.
01:04I want to know everything that she's doing.
01:06I'm living vicariously through her.
01:07She's already totally like she doesn't want me there, so that kind of hurt my feelings a little bit.
01:11If I need to bake cakes and slap her face on the front and deliver it to every single sorority house, I'm doing it.
01:19Maybe I need counseling or something.
01:24You need to know how to play the game.
01:26We have all these flashcards of each 18 sororities.
01:29The black is just giving grieving widows.
01:32Louder!
01:33Ugh!
01:34Said you want my spot.
01:36Red Gucci bag, my Rush bag.
01:39These parents are willing to drop thousands of dollars on clothes, jewelry, even Rush consultants.
01:46People do call me the Rush King.
01:48What about Bill Alverson?
01:50We've got this Rush coach.
01:51He's the number one Rush coach in America.
01:54You guys are going to be like ink hoots.
01:56What a hoot.
01:57There are three important things in a mother's life.
01:59The birth of her child, her daughter's wedding day, and sorority rush.
02:04What about nutcracker?
02:05I don't think you want to be a nutcracker.
02:07That's nasty.
02:08Three, two, one.
02:15Y'all know that rejection is part of it, right?
02:20I did not receive a bid.
02:24Rush week is so hard.
02:26Are y'all preparing for that?
02:28This might be the most competitive year yet.
02:30There's only a limited amount of spots.
02:32I'm literally pacing the bathroom because I'm so nervous.
02:36It's a big deal in our family.
02:40How are you going to handle it if you don't get a house?
02:49Everybody thinks you go to college to study to get your degree.
02:52True.
02:52But another education you get while you're in college is life.
02:57Greek life helps and assists you with that because it's providing you a group of people
03:03that like you and that you like.
03:05You learn how to get along with people.
03:07You learn how to navigate yourself.
03:09Greek life really sums it up.
03:10Hey, y'all.
03:11It's Alexis, and all I've been working on is a rush.
03:14It's three weeks away, and if you're not working on a rush, what do you do?
03:17I'm going to Ole Miss.
03:24Hotty toddy.
03:25I'm super excited.
03:26But everyone in my family went to the University of Georgia.
03:30It was a bit of a shock that I chose Ole Miss.
03:35My family has always been active in sororities.
03:40It's a big deal in the South.
03:42I went to the University of Georgia.
03:44I'm a bulldog.
03:45I had a lot of friends in different sororities, but I was more involved with the Kappa organization.
03:55Those are mine.
03:56This is me.
03:57You can take one to rush.
03:59You want to?
04:00Lexi came into my life when I was 60 years old.
04:04She had difficult circumstances with a family that was unable to take care of her.
04:09And when I took Lexi and held her in my arms, I knew I was going to keep her for the rest of her life.
04:15I would say it was about kindergarten when I realized, oh, my mom is actually a lot older than everyone else.
04:21Like, everyone thinks she's my grandma.
04:23What's going on?
04:24It was kind of challenging.
04:26My mom, she's the best thing that's ever happened to me.
04:30But she is literally a helicopter mom.
04:32When I was in Italy, I saw this and I said, Rush, my Lexi will look like a million dollars in this restaurant.
04:41She tracks my car.
04:43So that I can see wherever she is.
04:46She tracks my location.
04:48She tracks the speed I'm going.
04:50That's for safety.
04:51Love it.
04:53David Yehrman.
04:54All of my outfits have to be very appropriate for the occasion.
04:58It's really annoying.
05:00Perfect rush dress.
05:01What these moms will spend for their daughters to have the perfect rush experience is unbelievable.
05:08And it becomes this crazy neurotic kind of existence that's gone wackadoodle.
05:14All of these gifts are not from my mom.
05:17It's like a cute little time, like, cooler.
05:20Thank you so much, mom.
05:21I love you.
05:21I just don't think this is super appropriate for Rush.
05:28Stop.
05:29Can we stop for a minute?
05:31Here's the deal.
05:32Whether you like it or not, I want you to be totally prepared.
05:38People think that I'm just like Princess Lexi and everything's perfect and easy, but she's used to being the boss.
05:44She's never had anyone telling her what to do.
05:46I would pick it up and say, that's really cute.
05:49I said, I don't think it's for me at Rush.
05:53Okay.
05:53Is what I said.
05:56I definitely really want to be in a sorority.
05:58I kind of grew up around it.
05:59Like, I just really want to be where I fit in with the girls the most.
06:02And the distance is really, like, top of the list on pros and cons.
06:07They're perfect.
06:07All right, you can leave them on.
06:10Okay, bye.
06:10I need to be independent.
06:12I need to kind of find myself.
06:15I'm super excited to go by myself.
06:17At least until mom moves in next door, so.
06:24My dream was to come to USC.
06:26I'm a sophomore.
06:27I'm actually going to get my English degree and try to go to law school.
06:31During my freshman year, I seriously was just a hermit.
06:34I had no social life whatsoever.
06:37I was so nervous to make friends.
06:39I thought they were going to think, like, what is this country bumpkin doing?
06:43Like, this girl is literally a hick from this town I've never heard of.
06:46These girls are completely different than me.
06:49Like, I still want to go get my nails done Friday, but, like, Saturday, I got to be back home
06:54because I got to go fishing with my dad.
06:56I was hoping that when I went to college, I was just going to be able to walk in and make
07:00a huge group of friends on the first day, but I soon realized that it was not like that
07:05at all.
07:06So what are they all planning on doing about the sorority stuff?
07:09I've been looking up some stuff about sorority coaches because I never rushed because I didn't
07:13go to school.
07:14I'm very proud of Hadley.
07:16She's the only one of us that's ever been to university, so it's a really big accomplishment.
07:21There are some things that I would rather sacrifice to see her have.
07:25I want better for her than he and I ever had.
07:29How much do you think of the goals?
07:30It could be upwards of $1,000 to have a coach.
07:35So does she need this to get into the sorority?
07:38I would say yes, because she doesn't know who to lean on.
07:42We don't know anything, and sororities are very, very competitive, from what I understand,
07:46especially in Southern colleges.
07:50And we afford it?
07:51If we've always been able to make it somehow, we'll make it this time.
07:54So I guess this means I'll get my new truck next year.
07:58Yeah, probably so.
08:00What's one more year?
08:01What's one more year?
08:02You just can't show up for Rush.
08:04You've got to prep months in advance.
08:06You need to register for sorority recruitment.
08:09My Rush Week checklist.
08:11Checklist.
08:11What's it pack in your Rush bag?
08:13So the checklist for Rush, it can be pretty extensive and time-consuming.
08:16You'll need a list of all your extracurricular activities.
08:19Sorority headshot.
08:20Start preparing your outfits early.
08:21You've got to have a resume.
08:23You come in with a good resume.
08:25If you need a sorority resume, I have one in my bio for only $5.
08:28Start preparing to make your Rush resume.
08:30Make sure it looks clean.
08:31If you're not prepared, and you haven't done the work, the good news is, I'm here to help.
08:36I've been preparing girls for Rush for over 30 years.
08:41Oh, somebody's at the door.
08:42Let me catch the door.
08:46Bill!
08:46Hey, Miss Paula.
08:48Oh, I'm so excited to see you.
08:50If you live in the South, you're going to pledge a sorority.
08:53Failure is not an option for these Rush moms.
08:56Lexi, this is Bill Iverson, the number one Rush coach in America.
09:02My last name is Alverson, not Iverson.
09:06Do you want me to call you Paola?
09:08It's nice to meet you.
09:09I'm going to meet you officially.
09:10Nice grip.
09:11Lexi has a tendency to be shy if she doesn't know you.
09:15She's very cautious.
09:17I think that could be a trait of being adopted.
09:20All right, first thing we're going to do, we don't put our hands in front of our privates.
09:25What?
09:26We don't cup the cooter, Miss Paula.
09:28Thank you.
09:29Thank you.
09:30That's right.
09:31The reason that you don't cup the cooter, it puts your hands in a viewing area in the no-no zone,
09:36and do you want people staring at your crotch?
09:37Why do we want to start off talking with you looking like you have a personal itch?
09:42Just sit down and be comfortable at the kitchen.
09:44You want me or just Lexi?
09:46Oh, I think you have to be part of the process, sweet lady.
09:49I want to be.
09:49I know you need to be, Miss Tori Birch-Flats.
09:52I know.
09:52I want to go over your resume.
09:54I want to look at your video.
09:56You got your application.
09:57So you like pink, clearly.
09:59I love pink.
09:59But remember, Phi Mu is pink city.
10:01Nobody else is pink city.
10:02Phi Mu is not as strong.
10:04Hold on.
10:05It's not big.
10:06But you know what?
10:06What if she likes it?
10:07And you've just said something negative about a house.
10:09It is pretty bad.
10:10Well, but also, we're legacies for a couple of sororities.
10:15Yeah, well, hold on to that.
10:16That gets her to Tuesday.
10:20Well, I didn't think we were set, but I was hoping that it would give us an edge.
10:25There's too many legacies out there.
10:27This looks good.
10:28I do want to shape up the hair.
10:30It looks better here than there.
10:31Now, let's talk about things you need to do, okay?
10:34One, I want you to reevaluate all your social media.
10:37We ain't looking for the booty.
10:39Get them gone.
10:39Something I've definitely been doing all year.
10:41Get that?
10:42Anything that could even be.
10:43See, when I went through Rush, we didn't have the internet.
10:49Alexis wants to be a free bird.
10:50Now, she doesn't want her mom making all the choices and decisions on everything she's
10:54doing for her.
10:55My advice to Alexis is real simple.
10:57Break free.
10:58Secondly, it was a much smaller campus.
11:01Lexi, you're so beautiful.
11:02You've got to really get in.
11:04Well, that's a marketing kind of thing.
11:06Sharing who you are physically and...
11:09Hold on.
11:10Hold on.
11:10Hold on.
11:11I think she's constantly critiqued her her whole life.
11:13I don't want mom making all the choices and decisions on everything she's doing.
11:17Paula, you've got homework.
11:22Tell me.
11:23You're going to learn how to become mute for the first time in your life.
11:26It's time to believe what you've done with this child and let it be.
11:31Okay.
11:32Because you're trying to fix it and make sure it's going to be right come hell or high water.
11:36Helicopter mom is a great term.
11:37And Paula is one.
11:38You see films and a helicopter's landing in a field and what's it doing to all the grass
11:43and this stuff?
11:44Blowing it out.
11:44And that's the problem here.
11:46We're going to work on not being critical, but supportive, but guiding.
11:51Mute.
11:51Mute.
11:52That'll be hard.
11:53Class is in session.
11:54Homework is due.
11:55You don't just show up to college on day one and say, hey, I think I'll go through Rush.
12:01This is something you have to plan for.
12:03It's definitely a lot.
12:04It can be a little overwhelming.
12:06You're going to fill out applications.
12:07You're going to make videos.
12:09You're going to request recommendation letters.
12:12You are going to do more trying to get into Rush than you did trying to get into that college.
12:18What about registration?
12:20Have you done anything for registration yet?
12:22I'm at the very end of the registration.
12:24I really think we're down to the wire.
12:27Hadley is nervous about going through Rush.
12:29She doesn't know who to talk to because most people rush their freshman year and they don't
12:34rush their sophomore year.
12:35So she doesn't really have anybody her age that would be going through it at the same
12:41time.
12:42So she doesn't really know who to ask.
12:44I've just been so overwhelmed with everything that Hadley has had to get done with Rush.
12:48Sometimes it just sneaks up on us and I'm like, we've got to do this today.
12:51And she's like, well, what am I supposed to do?
12:53And I'm like, well, I don't know.
12:54I mean, you know, what about the round one video?
12:57Yeah, but I don't even know how to make the video.
12:59This all is just like just feeling really overwhelming to me.
13:01I don't really know if I even want to do this anymore.
13:04Well, you're going to let something that's a little bit tough deterring you from something
13:11that you've talked about all summer long that you wanted to do.
13:14I talked to Dad this morning and we are going to hire you a recruitment or a Rush coach.
13:21And it's probably going to be $1,000 or more.
13:26$1,000.
13:27I cannot, oh my gosh, like I cannot be more grateful.
13:31I'm at a loss of words.
13:32Well, thank you, Mama.
13:33But $1,000, I mean.
13:35Yeah, that's a lot of money.
13:36I'm so anxious about all this.
13:38I don't care what we got to do to get this sorority stuff done.
13:41And I feel like you wanting to join this sorority is a great decision.
13:44My parents really go out of their way for me.
13:47Like I've seen them go without since I was a little kid just so that I could have the
13:51greatest and the best things.
13:53They want me to achieve all my dreams, like no matter what it was.
13:57You have made it so much further than Dad and I ever have.
14:01Well, you have.
14:03And if this is something that you want to do, we owe you this much.
14:06I am hoping that with the sorority I can get some really good internships or even get my
14:12dream job one day at a really good law firm.
14:14I'm just saying with the money and everything, like, we can do it.
14:18We have it.
14:19They better help me get into the exact sorority that I want to do again.
14:23No, you know that's not a promise.
14:24That's not a given.
14:27What's your social media like?
14:29These girls are looking at this six months out.
14:33Social media is big during Rush.
14:35Everybody knows this.
14:36It's TikTok crazy land.
14:37Watch what you post.
14:38You might be thinking, oh, I don't rush until August, so it's fine.
14:41Wrong.
14:42We're looking at your Instagram.
14:44Scrub your profiles.
14:45Take down any video where you are using profanity.
14:49This is Southern sorority culture.
14:51We are good Christian people.
14:54We may cuss like sailors behind closed doors, but we will never swear on record.
14:58Lexi, the one thing that Bill started off with was to clean up social media.
15:07No pictures of bathing suits.
15:09No pictures of fannies.
15:11So let's look at your social media, and let me point out some things that I think you need to kind of move around.
15:17I would move that one around because, you see, he doesn't want you to be a sex kitten in a skimpy bathing suit.
15:25My bathing suits cannot be on my behind.
15:28I would get rid of that one.
15:30That's such a happy picture.
15:31No, I would get rid of it too much.
15:33But is that iced tea?
15:35Mm-hmm.
15:36You're not allowed to be holding a cup or do anything that would maybe imply you're drinking alcohol.
15:44Oh, no.
15:45Get rid of that one.
15:46These are from traveling.
15:48That's okay.
15:48You just, you tap.
15:50Huh?
15:50Tap.
15:51Tap.
15:52Tap.
15:54You just, you tap.
15:56Huh?
15:56Tap.
15:57You tap.
15:58I just gotta see boobs.
16:00Oh, my God.
16:02The whole body's showing.
16:04He doesn't want sex kitten.
16:05I don't know if that's exactly how he phrased it.
16:07Well, it may not be, but that's how I interpret it.
16:11Gotta get rid of that one too.
16:12Too much.
16:13I knew Mom was involved, but I didn't know it was possible to be this involved.
16:18Tap.
16:20It's really annoying.
16:24Hey!
16:25Hello.
16:26You must be Hadley.
16:27Yes.
16:27Pleasure to meet you.
16:28So nice to meet you.
16:30Tell me what we're doing.
16:31So I'm just a regular Southern girl.
16:33Uh-huh.
16:34And I feel like I don't know how to sell myself to the sorority girls.
16:39I want to make sure I have the best chance of everybody getting to know me and not thinking I'm just some country bumpkin.
16:44Okay, so there's a couple things there.
16:46We're not going to be a country bumpkin.
16:48You're a small-town Southern girl.
16:50Big damn difference.
16:52Hadley.
16:52She's a country bumpkin girl who's, oh, baby, sugar, honey, and all this kind of stuff.
16:56Talk to her about the color of the yard, whether the grass is dead or alive.
17:00It doesn't matter.
17:01You're just going to have fun.
17:02She has no idea that that's her golden trait.
17:05So where are you in your rest preparation?
17:08It's coming up.
17:09It is definitely coming up.
17:10And I have not registered.
17:12Well, that needs to happen ASAP.
17:15Yes.
17:16Boom.
17:16Got to get that done.
17:16Yes.
17:17Resume written.
17:18No resume yet.
17:18Okay, got to get that done.
17:20Girl, where are you on your wardrobe?
17:24First round video.
17:25We got to get prepared for that and what we're going to say and how excited and not use the
17:29word country bumpkin.
17:30You're kind of behind the game.
17:32We need to jump on that ASAP.
17:34I had my doubts at first, but now it seems to me like we need you to get in the sorority.
17:42All right.
17:43Let me go get the chat book.
17:48In order to go through Rush, you need to coordinate your outfits for the week.
17:53You want to wear something that they're going to remember.
17:55Outfit doesn't have anything to do with a type of, like, good conversation you're going to have
17:59with someone.
18:00The most important thing is always come across as confident, happy, ready when you walk
18:06through that sorority door.
18:07I've taken your advice.
18:08It's time for you to take Bill's advice and me have a little fun while you're mute.
18:14Mute.
18:15Mute.
18:16Give it my best shot.
18:17I think I might need to try some things on.
18:20Oh, I got that in Italy.
18:22Mute.
18:23I got it.
18:24You're mute.
18:25Oh, she's so happy to handle.
18:27She's so glamorous.
18:30Maybe I'll wear some of your perfume.
18:34This is good.
18:35This is improvement.
18:36I know you're mute.
18:38Oh, you're not the boss anymore.
18:39Chanel umbrella.
18:41Can I take it to school?
18:45Sorry, I can't hear you.
18:46What were you saying?
18:47Oh, my gosh.
18:48Thank you.
18:50Might need to get rid of these now.
18:53Time to go.
18:54She's going to want to take that scarf with her.
19:00All the sororities want the rush video.
19:02It is their first time to see you and see basically your marketing tool for who you are.
19:07Get ready with me to make my round one rush video.
19:10I'm low-key nervous.
19:12Why am I nervous?
19:13I really shouldn't be.
19:14You want to click with them on camera, and you really want to make a great impression in the first five seconds.
19:19As the week goes on, they can very likely go back and look at that video.
19:24It's the girl we met on the video, the girl that's coming to our party.
19:27If they're not the same, that's a big mountain to get over.
19:31All right, let's try a little video run.
19:33I'm not expecting this to go well.
19:36Hey, y'all.
19:37I'm Hadley Drake, and I'm so excited to go through Rush.
19:40It's called recruitment, so, yeah, so now the next thing is go put on a shirt and a top that has a collar or some type of thing fit around your neck.
19:48We're not rushing our boobs.
19:50During COVID, everything was done by submitting a video and even Zoom post-COVID.
19:56The sorority has realized, let's get all the girls to submit videos, and it makes it easier for the sorority to kind of start their elimination process and learn who the girl is.
20:06It's okay to bring that little bit of cheerleader girl out.
20:08Okay, because I do want people to see, like, my big, bubbly personality.
20:12So let's do it again and show a little bit of big and bubbly.
20:16Bill's training.
20:17If she does get a house and this pays off, it will 100% totally be worth every single penny that we have spent.
20:24Look up here so your eyes are a little bit higher up.
20:27Right there.
20:27You ready?
20:28Yeah, go.
20:29If she gets a house, um, I'm sorry.
20:34I just want her to be happy.
20:36And I know that she will be if she gets a house.
20:41An unpopular opinion of mine is that I really do love pineapple on pizza.
20:46I really hope that this video allowed you guys to see a little bit more about me.
20:51Thank you so much.
20:52Bye-bye.
20:53I'm good.
20:55That was it.
20:56We had a gift.
20:57His name is Bill Iverson.
20:58Yeah.
20:59And he is a rush coach.
21:01So what did he tell you?
21:02First thing he told me was to be mute.
21:04That's not your natural attitude at all.
21:07This morning I didn't get up and tell her what to wear and I didn't tell her about her hair and how to fix it.
21:13And I said, do you love it?
21:14I do too.
21:16So you're headed there to Ole Miss?
21:18Yeah, one more week.
21:20And then, I mean, then I rush.
21:24I'm a little nervous about it.
21:25My mom's, like, going over the top about everything she can to do with it.
21:31That's what moms do, though.
21:32She literally brought in a rush coach.
21:35Wow.
21:38Yeah, he really wants me to be, like, super outgoing and talk to everyone and just be, like, oh, my gosh.
21:44And I feel like I'm very, like, relaxed.
21:47It just, like, takes a little bit, especially for me with, like, strangers.
21:51He wants you to come out of your shell a little bit.
21:53Yeah, be excited and be happy.
21:54But, like, you've got to think of it like a tennis match.
21:57Be a little more assertive.
21:58Some of the girls are a little bit scary, though.
22:00Yeah.
22:00Well, that's probably what he's saying.
22:01He wants you to be a little bit, you know, come out of your shell and be yourself.
22:06What if I don't get in a sorority?
22:08What if I say the wrong thing?
22:09What if I don't get a bit at all?
22:12Well, rush is difficult.
22:14I mean, it's a very hard process, especially if you don't have people helping you.
22:17The bond that you get in a sorority and a fraternity and the people you meet does help you later on in life.
22:23I don't think you need to panic as much as you're...
22:25I'm not panicked.
22:26I'm not.
22:27But it's stressful.
22:27I don't mean to cut you off.
22:28I'm not panicked.
22:29I'm just being transparent and letting you know that there's another side.
22:34And what I don't want to happen, I don't want Lexi to marry somebody from Mississippi.
22:40Because you'll be too far.
22:42It'll be way too far.
22:43I understand that.
22:43She's got to come back to the family.
22:45I want her to live in the bubble with me or the house will be empty.
22:50This house is all about Lexi.
22:52I'm real sad.
22:53How are you going to let go and let Lexi be on her own and choose her own way?
23:01The amount of money these girls are spending on Rush.
23:10My outfit!
23:11She's from Nana's.
23:12Please.
23:13Kiki Riki.
23:14David German.
23:15David German.
23:16That's us.
23:16It's Chanel.
23:17Skirt is Burberry.
23:18David German.
23:19David German.
23:20David German.
23:20Are you going to get into a sorority because of your outfit?
23:22No.
23:23Dizzy cats, don't stand there in your pretty little Gucci shorts and tell these girls that outfits
23:28don't matter.
23:29How do you know that matters?
23:30So this is an outfit of the day for mine and my mom's day off.
23:38My top is from Southern Vibes Boutique in Gaffney.
23:40My shirt is Lily.
23:41Oh my gosh, just pulled it off my arm.
23:43Dress is from Dillard's and the shoes are Margaritaville footballs.
23:48Perfect.
23:51So my mom, are you excited for sorority rush?
23:55I hope you can find your dress at this little shopping center.
23:58I'm finally getting to go shopping with my coach, Bill.
24:02Well, I think I'll be able to find at least something.
24:05And I could not see myself going shopping without Grandma Hattie.
24:08I call her Mama, and she's definitely one of my biggest supporters.
24:12She helps me with everything.
24:14We'll probably just stay the night in your apartment.
24:19We'll have to walk at least to eat.
24:21Mama, you're going to drive your car down there.
24:24No, why not?
24:24Y'all can call an Uber.
24:25She'll be with you.
24:26Yeah, we can.
24:27A what?
24:28An Uber.
24:28Mama, you don't know what an Uber is.
24:30Come on.
24:32Okay, girl, it's like a taxi cab on your phone.
24:35What?
24:35I guess we're just going to have to put you in a nursing home.
24:38Bull.
24:40So I am a little nervous to go shopping today.
24:43When I first met Bill, I was very intimidated by him
24:46because he does have such a strong presence,
24:49and he knows so much more.
24:51I mean, he really is just the king of sorority recruitment.
24:56Hey, Bill.
24:57Hey, girl.
24:57Here's Mama, and this is Mama.
25:00Nice to see you again, Bill.
25:02Good to see you, but let me meet this queen.
25:03Hi, I'm Bill Alverson.
25:05It's nice to meet you.
25:05I'm Hattie.
25:06Hey, I've already pulled a few things.
25:08I've been kind of looking.
25:09I'm picking just things with color.
25:11Shopping with Bill, my concern is Hadley feeling uncomfortable
25:15because she's kind of watching the money a little bit,
25:18and maybe she's got on a $50 to $100 dress,
25:22and someone else has on a $300 or $400 dress.
25:25Honestly, I'm not sure where the other girls
25:27are going to be shopping for this kind of stuff.
25:29I would assume, like, you know, some high-end store.
25:32Last time I checked,
25:34you're not going to have a price tag hanging off your dress.
25:37Okay.
25:37If you're acting like you're the po-broke girl
25:40falling off the turnip truck,
25:41you're going to get treated that way.
25:42You're going to look good.
25:44You're going to present yourself well.
25:46And when they ask you where you got this,
25:48oh, my God, this cutest boutique named Gracie's.
25:50Okay?
25:51All right.
25:51Let's carry that back.
25:52Oh, God.
25:53I think it's going to weigh me down.
25:54Keep your shoes on.
25:55Do not come out of here barefooted.
25:57This ain't a grocery store.
26:04Oh, I like that one.
26:07That's good.
26:07I like that one.
26:09I think Bill is doing a great job
26:11with Hadley at the dress shop.
26:12It's organza.
26:14As far as they know,
26:14this is like a $400 dress.
26:16Don't run your damn mouth and say it's not.
26:18I won't.
26:18Okay?
26:19You could just see a different glow in her.
26:21I'm Hadley Durant.
26:22And I'm happy to be a member of your sorority.
26:28Listen, Lacey.
26:29I don't want you to get frustrated
26:31if things don't go the way you anticipate.
26:35Are you worried about me getting a bit for Rush?
26:37I'm just worried that you could have your heart
26:40set on a group that doesn't invite you
26:44and that would hurt you.
26:45I don't want you to be hurt at all.
26:47Right?
26:49Adopted children, deep, deep down,
26:52always are aware of rejection.
26:55My biggest fear is that she would fall in love
26:59with a group of girls and not get invited back.
27:04Thank you.
27:06Okay.
27:06And she would get crushed.
27:08All right, ladies.
27:12After I left, I had some falls.
27:15Coming up with a different school,
27:17two states away.
27:18That was intentional, wasn't it?
27:19Yes, sir.
27:20And then you sold it to your mom
27:21without telling her the real reason why you did it.
27:24I have some concerns with Alexis
27:26because I think she's still trying to find her way
27:29to get what she wants.
27:30Not things, but her own life.
27:33Down deep, there's a side of her
27:35that has a great streak of independence.
27:36And I want that to grow during Rush.
27:40I am ready for a fresh star.
27:42I'm ready to be in Oxford.
27:44You're being respectful
27:44because your mom's sitting next to you.
27:46But you kind of want to stand on your own two feet.
27:48I want to be independent.
27:49You want to be.
27:51She turned 18.
27:53She said, well, mom, you know I'm 18.
27:55And I said, well, what does that mean?
27:58And she stopped for a minute.
28:00And she said, well, I'm supposed to be independent.
28:02What does that mean, being independent?
28:04Did you go up to your mother and say,
28:05I just need to get the hell away from y'all
28:07for a little bit and do my own thing?
28:08No.
28:09I know you didn't.
28:10Own it.
28:12Be bold.
28:13That's one thing she taught me how to do
28:15is get what I want.
28:16Then why in the hell are we being quiet about ourselves?
28:20Stand on that for Rush.
28:21This is going to be the most competitive year of Rush at Ole Miss ever.
28:29Finally going to Rush, Ole Miss.
28:31It is a whole lot more competitive
28:33than when their mother and grandmother and great-grandmother went through Rush.
28:37I can assure you of that.
28:39Your life is there for people to review.
28:41That can be pressure.
28:43But it kind of gets you ready for life in a lot of ways, too.
28:45There's 2,500 girls, roughly, registered to Rush.
28:49And there's, like, less than 1,000 spots.
28:53T'was the night before Rush and all through the house,
28:56the P&Ms were stirring.
28:58You can believe that.
29:00P&Ms are potential new members.
29:04Rush Week is a dance between the sisters
29:07and the P&Ms who want to be sisters.
29:11Wish us luck, guys.
29:12Bye.
29:13Bye.
29:13We've got four rounds.
29:15Open house.
29:16You watch a video of all the sororities
29:18for everybody to decide,
29:20who am I going to dance with first?
29:22Philanthropy, where you find out what's their civic purpose.
29:25Sisterhood, we're narrowing it down to see,
29:28do you like us?
29:28Do we like you?
29:30And then you have prep.
29:31What's my first choice?
29:33Where do I see myself?
29:34One week, and you're deciding
29:35whether you want to be with somebody
29:37for the rest of your life.
29:41Oh, wait.
29:42Oh, I got that door back there.
29:44I just like, come on, do you?
29:45Today is move-in day
29:47here at the University of South Carolina.
29:49It's been a long day.
29:51We started early this morning
29:54with packing the truck and coming down,
29:57but we still have a lot of unpacking to do.
30:00I started thinking about it last night.
30:02I'm probably going to miss her
30:03more than I thought I would.
30:04We don't want her to repeat again
30:07what she had to go through her freshman year.
30:09I don't want her to be locked up in her room.
30:12The only thing she does is go to campus,
30:14go to class, eat, and not do anything.
30:17It's been an exhausting process,
30:18not just for Hadley, but for me as well.
30:20So if she doesn't get the house she wants
30:23or doesn't get a house at all,
30:25I mean, it's going to hurt her.
30:27I'm just hoping that this year
30:29she gets a little bit more social.
30:32Of course, I'll be very hurt for her.
30:35I will try not to show how hurt I am for her,
30:37but we've spent a lot of time and a lot of money.
30:41And, you know, I've been as dedicated
30:43to the process as she has been
30:44because I've been right here with her.
30:46But the harsh reality is
30:48there's not going to be that many spots.
30:51I mean, so somebody's going to get cut.
30:56Being up at school is literally so good.
30:59I moved in today and it was really stressful.
31:02By the time we moved her into the dorm
31:04and got her sheets on the bed,
31:06it was 10 hours.
31:07I was exhausted.
31:09I'm feeling good.
31:10But I'm obviously a little bit nervous.
31:13My biggest worries are
31:15that nobody's going to be there to help her.
31:17She's got to figure it out.
31:19I'm literally pacing the bathroom
31:22because I'm so nervous about tomorrow for Rush.
31:26I'm just so scared that I'm not going to fit in
31:28with the other girls.
31:32I'm just scared to go meet everybody.
31:40First round is open house.
31:42You watch a video of all the sororities
31:44in a marketing campaign, if you will.
31:47It shows you the girls and their colors
31:49and their house.
31:50I'm so, so excited.
31:52It's my recruitment shirt that the school gave us.
31:54I'm wearing my necklace that I always wear.
31:57Oh, my goodness.
31:58I cannot wait.
31:59Every girl the first three days of Rush
32:01is wearing the same Panhellenic t-shirt.
32:04This is the back with the sponsors.
32:07Okay.
32:07And then this is the front.
32:08So this allows them to get to know
32:11the personality of the girl a little bit better
32:13so that if her clothes aren't exactly right,
32:16they're getting to know her.
32:17This is a huge city,
32:18and it's all the way up this road.
32:20And I'm nervous.
32:21And just maybe I'm like the lone ranger.
32:26Basically what you're doing,
32:27you have the videos you submitted.
32:29Super excited to attend Ole Miss in the fall
32:31as a journalism major.
32:32They see all the videos and they rank their girls.
32:35Then you see their commercials
32:37and you rank them.
32:39We're going to hocus-pocus and see what they match up.
32:41Their goal is to pick eight out of 11 sororities
32:45that they will be meeting with during the week.
32:48Oh, Lexi.
32:50Okay, how was it?
32:52Stressful.
32:52We have leased a house for me to stay in during rush.
32:57I feel like I'm going around in circles
32:59saying I'm stressed, I'm stressed, I'm stressed.
33:01Like, we had to choose eight houses today
33:03that we want to pursue
33:04just based on watching a two-minute video.
33:07That's all.
33:08So I didn't really know how to, like, form an opinion.
33:11Who would?
33:12They would call us at 7 a.m.
33:14if we do not get invited back.
33:16There are no guarantees at this point.
33:18A house could drop them at any time.
33:20The second round of sorority recruitment is philanthropy.
33:25It's the first time these girls step foot
33:27into these sorority houses.
33:29If there is a question to be asked,
33:31Adley Drake is going to ask it,
33:32and I'm going to want to know
33:33every single detail about it.
33:35The people taking you around rate you.
33:39This is my OOTD, cake for dinner,
33:42just, like, ruffly skirt, Tory Burch shoes,
33:45and that's it.
33:46So I'm super excited to go see all the houses.
33:50I'll be finding out pretty soon
33:52which houses didn't want to see me back anymore.
33:54So I'm definitely nervous for that.
33:57I get my schedule in three minutes.
34:00Well, I was looking at my emails on that.
34:02Okay, I just need to tap it now.
34:06I need to finish so I look good, feel good.
34:11Nope, can't finish.
34:13I have to tap it.
34:14Okay, so I got five out of the eight
34:16invited me back, which is good.
34:19So I'm super happy.
34:21Also, all the ones, like, my top, like, five.
34:25The one that my, like, mom and grandma were in,
34:33I did not get.
34:34I, like, am not sure how to, like,
34:36process this information.
34:40My mom might not be, like,
34:43the happiest about this.
34:46Well, congratulations.
34:50I can't read it, but what, what was it?
34:53My top three invited me back.
34:54So I'm super excited.
34:55Did you get a kappa or a ka-o?
34:59Mm-hmm.
35:05Okay.
35:08She didn't get into the one that I was in.
35:11So I was devastated by that.
35:16We're staying at a hotel nearby,
35:17about a block and a half away.
35:19Ugh, my stomach's in knots.
35:20I just can't wait till she gets back
35:21and I can find out what's going on.
35:23So I just got to go and meet, like,
35:25all the houses today.
35:27Every house that I wanted asked me back.
35:29So I was really excited about that.
35:34Sisterhood is where our P&Ms get to sit down
35:38with the sisters and get to know them
35:39on a little deeper level.
35:41No more Panhellenic tees.
35:42We get the dresses.
35:45Outfits are important because you want to fit in.
35:47And then if it reflects some of your personality
35:49or it's a good color for you, great.
35:51But you don't want to look like fish on leaf.
35:53I'll be spending 40 minutes at different houses
35:56and they're all back to back.
35:58I just want to go and find the best connection,
36:00like a real group of sisters.
36:02Sisterhood is the big first deep cut day.
36:05Coming down to six sororities, eight sororities,
36:08everyone starts to feel sometimes,
36:09for the first time in their life,
36:11the taste of rejection.
36:13I'm on my second day of sisterhood.
36:15I have DG, A-C-I-O, and A-O-P-I.
36:19You tend to be very guarded with your emotions.
36:22You just let them know,
36:23I'm so excited to be here.
36:25And you can say, I was adopted,
36:27but my mom has been my mom.
36:30I'm excited to find my new family.
36:32Got it?
36:33Today I went to Alpha Delta Pi
36:36and I had such a great experience.
36:38You're meeting all the girls in the sorority,
36:40but really your close buddies
36:41are going to be in your pledge class.
36:43Look around the room going,
36:45do I want to hang out with these people?
36:47Oh my God, I love this sorority,
36:49but I don't like these girls that are here.
36:51Sisterhood, the girls really have to make sure
36:54that they vibe with each other.
36:55They're going to be together for the next few years,
36:57but making connections that build you for your life,
37:01this is a critical decision.
37:06Preference, it's the big one.
37:08It's the one, I'm going to two or three,
37:10depending upon the school.
37:11And where do I want to end up?
37:13What's my first choice?
37:14Where do I stay myself?
37:16Save your best dress for prep day.
37:18It's prep day.
37:20I could cry.
37:21My dress is from Lulu's.
37:22This is the same color as my palm dress.
37:25My dress is from Lucy in the Sky.
37:28By the time these girls get around a prep day,
37:30most of them have their hearts set on a specific house.
37:33Wish me luck.
37:35Today could be an emotional day.
37:37Last night, I think I got into bed at like one o'clock.
37:40Just say that I'm not a little nervous.
37:44Would be an understatement.
37:46Because I just took a big breath with that in.
37:54So I just got my schedule back for prep,
37:58and I couldn't be more happier with my top two kids
38:01because they were huge sororities,
38:03and like I literally knew huge.
38:05And I really am just so excited.
38:07I haven't even told my parents this,
38:14but every time I walk onto campus,
38:16I see somebody I know.
38:17I have somebody to go talk to.
38:19And it's just because I went through recruitment.
38:23I couldn't trade this for the world.
38:24I went to Tridel and Aopi,
38:27and I really love both of them.
38:29I put Aopi as number one and Tridel as number two.
38:32The anticipation is getting to me.
38:34I literally have been trying to go to sleep for so long.
38:37I'm so up to you guys tomorrow.
38:39I haven't felt like a CB or, in other words,
38:44country Vulcan since I've been down here.
38:47And I've actually had people tell me, like,
38:49oh, my gosh, you sound like such a Southern male.
38:52The days of CB are way, way, way over.
38:57It's finally bid day.
38:58The girls have made their choices.
39:00Happy bid day.
39:01Happy bid day, everybody.
39:03But today is bid day.
39:05Behind every girl going through runs.
39:07This is my OOTD for bid day.
39:09My skirt is from Gilly Hicks.
39:12My shoes are my own clothes.
39:15I'm so excited.
39:16There's a mommy right behind her
39:18that wants it as bad as she does.
39:19We're going to get the bid,
39:21and we're going to celebrate like you want, boys.
39:30The sisterhood that establishes today
39:34will follow Lexi for the rest of her life.
39:37And so it's a big deal today.
39:41I just dropped Hadley off for bid day.
39:43I'm just ecstatic to see where she's going to land
39:45and what house is going to be her home.
39:48Bid day is the last day of Rush Week
39:50when you learn which house you are running home to.
39:55All of the girls going through Rush
39:56go to the stadium,
39:58and they are handed envelopes,
40:00and it will tell them
40:01which sorority they got a bid to.
40:03Five, four, three, two, one!
40:14This is Lexi calling.
40:16I am high.
40:16I'm getting emotional
40:22because that was her favorite of the two.
40:27It's become a tradition for the girls
40:28just to run back to their sorority house.
40:31Roms just saved them,
40:33and they call that running home.
40:35It doesn't matter where the odds are.
40:38Moms don't have to be there during Rush,
40:40but bid day,
40:41mama and daddy need to show up.
40:43This is a big event this girl has gone through,
40:45and probably the first time
40:47she's gone through that type of level
40:48of selection process on both sides.
40:51So you kind of want to see your parents.
40:54Now all we have to do
40:55is find out where it's going to be.
40:57We're going to have a good time.
41:00Alexa got a A-O pie.
41:01Alexa, please!
41:02She handled herself so well.
41:04Alexa, please!
41:06And Alexis is now being independent.
41:08She didn't get into the one that I was in.
41:11I was somewhat hurt for that.
41:13Lexi flipped it off.
41:16She said,
41:17I'm going to get in the one I'm supposed to be in.
41:19That was fulfilling for me.
41:21But now,
41:22I wanted to fly.
41:24She's 80 bucks!
41:28Arguably,
41:28Hadley got into the best sorority of South Carolina.
41:32I'm proud of Hadley.
41:33She came into her own,
41:35and she showed everybody,
41:36I am no dumb country bumpkin.
41:39Being able to experience this with her
41:41is something that I'll never take for granted.
41:44She's getting to the age now
41:45that there's going to be a time
41:47where she doesn't come back home.
41:48So,
41:49take every moment that you can
41:52and experience everything you can
41:54with your children
41:55because
41:56they're grown and gone.
41:58She'll always have all of them to come home to,
42:01but
42:01cherish every moment.
42:03Thank you.
