Increasing amounts of sunny spells for most areas, with extensive cloud clearing southwards and breaking up, eventually clearing the far southwest by late afternoon. Temperatures close to average for most but it will feel cooler near to North Sea coasts thanks to an easterly breeze - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 20/08/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Alex Burkill.

00:00Hello, very good day to you. Now it's going to be a fine afternoon for many of us.
00:05There'll be some warm sunshine around, but not everywhere will have the warmth.
00:09Currently, yes, there is a front lingering across parts of the south-southwest,
00:13but it's quite a weak feature, so whilst it's bringing a bit of cloud
00:17as we go through the end of the morning into the afternoon,
00:20it's not bringing much, if any, rain, just a few drizzly spots.
00:23And actually, as the front clears away and the sun burns some of that cloud away,
00:27things are going to turn a bit brighter across parts of the south-west as well.
00:31Elsewhere as well, lots of fine sunny weather on offer, not totally wall-to-wall blue skies.
00:36No, there will be some cloud around, but most of us will see some decent sunshine breaking through.
00:41And in that sunshine, well, it's going to feel relatively warm.
00:44Temperatures peaking generally in the high teens or although possibly mid-20s, 23, 24,
00:49perhaps somewhere towards the south.
00:51Worth bearing in mind, though, there is a bit more of a breeze towards the east
00:54and around these North Sea coastal parts, it's going to feel a fair bit fresher.
00:59So mid-teens, perhaps, for some places, and that breeze will add to the fresher feel as well.
01:04Then as we go through into this evening, most places stay fine, but not everywhere.
01:08There will be a few showery bursts across parts of Orkney and Shetland in particular,
01:11and a few of those showers could just about push into parts of mainland Scotland,
01:15the tip of Aberdeenshire, for example,
01:17and perhaps around the far south-east of England as well,
01:20the tip of Kent and maybe, oh, sorry, the tip of Kent's there,
01:23and also the tip of East Anglia could see a few showers, perhaps.
01:26But most places will have a dry night.
01:28There will be some clear skies, especially away from the east,
01:31and whilst most towns and cities are going to hold up in double figures,
01:35some rural spots could be a fair few degrees colder than this,
01:38and we're looking at some places dropping to low single figures.
01:41So a chilly, fresh start for some of us first thing on Thursday morning.
01:46But then it's going to be another fine day for most of us.
01:49Yes, again, there will be some cloud around,
01:50a swathe of cloud across some parts of central southern Scotland
01:53into northern England, and that could be thick enough for a few spots of rain,
01:57maybe one or two spots over northern Ireland as well,
02:00and a few bits of cloud here and there,
02:02particularly towards some central eastern parts of England.
02:05But, like I say, generally a fine picture,
02:07a fair bit of sunshine on offer, in fact, across parts of the south-west,
02:11a much sunnier day tomorrow compared to today,
02:14and it is going to be pretty dry.
02:16Now, once more, a bit of a west-y split with the temperatures,
02:19so towards the west-southwest, especially in the sunshine,
02:22it's going to feel pretty warm.
02:23Temperatures similar to today, but still that brisk breeze
02:27and also that fresher, perhaps even chillier feel to things
02:31across some north-sea coastal parts,
02:33even some eastern parts of Scotland could be a bit fresh at times as well.
02:37As we go through towards the long bank holiday weekend,
02:40there's more fine weather to come.
02:42High pressure is going to stay firmly in control,
02:45so things are going to stay generally dry.
02:47And with that, we're going to see our temperatures rising a little bit,
02:49not as high as they have been earlier on in the summer,
02:52but nonetheless it is likely to be a bit warmer
02:54as we go through this weekend.
02:55Now, there's been a lot of talk about what's going to happen
02:58with Hurricane Erin and exactly how that's going to affect
03:00bank holiday Monday.
03:02At the moment, it now looks like the fine weather
03:05is going to linger through,
03:07and for what is, for much of the country, a bank holiday,
03:10it now does look set to be generally dry,
03:12but there could be some rain pushing through.
03:15And what happens later on next week as a result of Erin,
03:18well, that's still all to play for.
03:20But to find out more about what is likely to happen,
03:22well, make sure you check out the 10-day trend,
03:24which Alex Deacon will be bringing to you later on.
03:27Bye-bye.
