07:04calm down just a little game literally i got it you did not get it
07:09now we have three delightful ladies over here all of whom proudly claim to bear the name of
07:14minta durfee arbuckle who was charlie chaplin's first leading lady and bill cullen will start with
07:19you uh mrs arbuckle number two where was that picture that we saw where was that made
07:26oh in uh los angeles uh number three were they making pictures in new jersey at the time
07:33i hear a lot of the early pictures were made in garages picture was not made in new jersey it was made
07:38in los angeles is it not i beg your pardon it was made in los angeles that's quite all right uh
07:44is it not true number one that new jersey was really where they began to make motion pictures
07:48no it's not true no oh it's now they make pictures in new jersey in garages as i recall
07:54number two who who was charlie butterworth does that name mean anything to you number two charlie
08:01butterworth it's number two number two not no not to me particularly uh number number three gene
08:10harlow began her career uh in comedy films i believe can you tell me with whom gene harlow worked
08:16in her very early years well she worked with many many artists she was with william powell but before
08:22that uh so before that she got a buzzer and that's going to take us on to ann mira oh boy um number
08:32three are uh are you double jointed no i hope not personal no i am not uh number three did you ever use
08:43a a stunt woman in those old movies well we didn't have many stunt women in those very early days we had
08:50to do a lot of things ourselves uh thank you number one um what made you want to become an actress
08:58oh i just had the idea i wanted to so i just did i like to do what i want to do was was hollywood
09:05crazy in those days well it's not as crazy as it is today how do you mean that come on fess up
09:14you did a lot of crazy things all right thank you and let's go let's go go to you yes let me ask
09:21number three do you know who hal roach was i beg of all you know who hal roach is uh ala roach hal
09:28roach hal roach yes he was he was a comedian many years ago if i remember i think number two do you how
09:34many frames per second was that movie we saw what was that i wonder how many frames per second did the
09:40film move through the camera and number two you mean i didn't hear the last part i just
09:46wondered if you knew how many frames per second the movie was shot and a second well i really don't know
09:53number one do you remember the name of the director of that film no i don't
09:58was ben turpin in any of the number three was ben turpin in any of the movies that you did with
10:03he was in the movies he was not in that particular one yes he was in the movies
10:08number two did they have makeup people uh at that time in movie making not not very much we
10:15usually made ourselves your own makeup all right thank you we're gonna go down to kitty carlisle
10:20uh number two uh who wrote those films that you were in were they written on the set like the director
10:27hotel films today they were all ad lib that's what i thought yeah uh number one were you as athletic
10:33really is it looked in that picture or is it because it speeded up yes no i was very athletic thank
10:38you number three did you come off the set every day bruised and battered or was they done very
10:43most days we came off bruised and better you did really number two we exhausted after a day like what
10:48we saw on that picture well pretty much pretty much so did you ever get any real blows by accident yes
10:57just very often what happened well you just simply had to have a massage afterward or taken care of
11:06number one how did you meet mr arbuckle i met him on the bus oh where in hollywood did he pick you up
11:14well number two did you meet mr arbuckle on a bus well you're all saved by the bell because there
11:20it goes and that means that we're going to have to vote on what we've learned and we vote for number
11:25one or for number two or for number three it is 50 bucks for each wrong vote and 500 if nobody comes
11:34up with the right one this one will be difficult bill do you want to start these ladies are all
11:38marvelous and marvelously brief two of them marvelously brief i i voted for number two because
11:44when kitty asked uh who wrote uh the films she so quickly used the word ad lib which is show business
11:50term and i understand they were ad-libbed on the sets in those days we've got a two showing and
11:54what does ann mirror think well i i voted for number one because uh i i love her smile she has a real
12:03sense of humor i mean the other two ladies are lovely don't get me wrong but you know kind of
12:08like queens i think you're a comedian number one we've got a two and a one and hugh downs reason i think
12:14number two is authentic is because in answer to a technical question which she might not have known or had to
12:19know in the early part of her career she just frankly said she didn't know and i stack up to
12:24number two is the real so forthrightness gets a vote and we're going to go down to kitty carl isle
12:29and see why i don't see why she would know what kind of frames per second i i never knew what kind
12:33of frames per second but i voted for number two because uh she looks like a star to me well there you
12:41go we got three of them is that racked up right yeah we got three three twos and one one and here we go

16:56number one what is your name please my name is jefferson spivey number two my name is jefferson
17:04spivey number three my name is jefferson spivey possible in all three cases but two of them
17:11relying here's the real story of jefferson spivey i jefferson spivey had a dream as a boy to ride all
17:18the way across the u.s on horseback a couple of years ago that dream came true starting in santa
17:25barbara california my horse and i blazed our own trail through back roads and wilderness areas across
17:32mountains and deserts through the great plains of the middle west all the way to the eastern seaboard
17:38ending our journey in rehoboth beach delaware i lived off the land except for occasional meals at
17:44farmhouses along the way i slept out of doors almost every night it wasn't an easy trip but the
17:50experience was such a wonderful one that i'm trying to establish a cross-country trail for everyone to
17:55enjoy a trail on which no automobiles are allowed a trail to help people get out of the cities and close
18:02to the land i plan to call it the freedom freeway trail signed jefferson spivey
18:17and no doubt one of the most adventurous gentleman i know is mr hugh down so let's start with you
18:21all right number three uh did you have a pack horse with you or did you do this with a single horse
18:25i started out with a pack horse but i lost him crossing mojave uh number two did you uh did you
18:32change saddle horses uh or did you just rest the horse in other words did you used one horse and uh
18:39was out resting him too much just you didn't have to rest him too well two weeks in colorado but
18:45i tried to keep on the move uh number one how long did this trip take nearly seven months
18:50and number three did did you do did you do any of it on foot did you allow the horse to rest by
18:57walking alongside at times only sometimes you have to go uphill and sometimes downhill but mostly on
19:03the flat terrain we we did it together uh number two did you carry a bedroll or sleeping bag or yes i
19:10kind of carried a four pound uh down sleeping bag uh number one if you had it to do over again would you
19:16do it again going the other way no that's what number one says who knows whether he's the right
19:24one let's go to kitty fascinating uh number three what was the cost of this trip in toto
19:29i left with uh about a hundred dollars in my pocket and by the time i'd crossed the rockies i was down to
19:36about 25 cents so uh i knew i had to do better than that i was sponsored oh you were sponsored yes i was
19:45thank you number two um did you shoot game on route you say you lived off the land right i carried a
19:5145 and a rifle ah number one if you would not do this trip again why is it that you want to establish
19:57such a trail for others well uh the way i did it i had to go over man-made obstacles and uh the modern
20:05world uh fences cut fences freeways uh was your horse a jumper no no he could jump how'd you get over the
20:14fences number two i cut the fences oh you did number two do you cut the fences yeah is that allowed
20:20number two yes i cut fences it's not allowed but i tried to repair them after i'd going through but
20:26occasionally what kind of a horse and that buzzer kitty takes us to build that's interesting you
20:32mentioned uh that you you lived off the land and slept out of doors and now added to that was that you
20:37cut the fences so i'll stay with number two did you at any time during this entire crossing number two
20:42run into trouble with the law yes i did a couple of times number one did you at all have any trouble
20:49with the law uh yes i did what what what particularly did they bug you about i mean what wearing a gun and
20:55yeah they get you for that especially here yeah uh number number three did you ride with your horse
21:02on any highways was it necessary to ride on any of our modern highways with your horse no uh just crossing
21:08them was was the biggest hazard really of the whole trip uh what did you have to do just sort of wait
21:14until i'll stay with number three about crossing these high speed highways wait until nothing was
21:18coming and then gallop like mad is that the way you did it or just take off i can imagine coming down
21:24a freeway and a horse goes dashing across uh number two uh you mentioned you were sponsored uh
21:30wasn't you number two who said you were sponsored all right but i was you were uh where did you get
21:36ah well everyone know what you wanted to know because we're going to go to ann
21:40uh number two uh i have bad news for your horse was just towed away downstairs
21:48but uh no seriously number two
21:52you find that this kind of uh heavy riding you uh got calluses yes i did you did huh i did yes what did you
22:01you do about that i don't want to get too graphic but you know i just i just walked alongside the
22:06horse for a while and after after the first three weeks it wasn't too bad right uh number three uh
22:12did you sing to your horse you know like in the movies they'd always sing to the horse so it'd go
22:17over the finish line or well i i had a tendency to fantasize quite a bit well i don't want to hear about
22:24but i i i did i did do quite a bit of singing to myself honestly you're really attached to that
22:30horse aren't you number three and that bell and does this in we must mark our ballots let's take
22:36another look while they're doing that what do you think at home do you think it's number one
22:40or do you think it's number two or are you certain it's number three if you were the producers it would
22:46cost you fifty dollars for each wrong guess five hundred dollars if all the guesses are wrong
22:51hugh downs have you made any decision yes i have and i can't really give the reasons except just a
22:57a feeling intuitive that number one is the authentic is the real so working on intuition we've got a one
23:03for a one and we're going to go down to kitty well i voted for number one because he went the way he
23:09said he really wouldn't do it again seemed very honest he gave us an awful lot of information though
23:13which is unusual for the real one but he has such a nice face that's sweet we've got a pair of ones
23:20what's bill cullen gonna do instead of giving you my reason for why i voted for whom i want to say
23:24that we're our own hugh downs was a pioneer very much the same you mentioned that gary but you
23:29weren't explicit hugh downs rode a horse all the way to tahiti which is very difficult and for that
23:35reason that didn't go very well there was it was i voted for number one it was a boat that he took to
23:40tahiti oh is that the way you get there that's why it didn't drown no wonder i never made it yes and what
23:45are you gonna do i guess i'm gonna be wrong again but i'm saying i wrote down number two and i'm
23:52staying right there tall in the saddle i love your beard and there you go we've got them all marked down
24:01will the real jefferson spivey please stand up
24:18let's find out about your trail buddies here number two sir what is your real name what do you do
24:22my name is john masson i'm a technical journalist and photographer
24:31uh kitty bill can either of you tell me why you didn't vote for number three is there something
24:36about number three that no no i'll tell you why i didn't because he looks like the kind of guy who
24:42would ride across on a horse like he's almost that looks like typecasting you mean yeah like like he's
24:47made up but number one looks like a stockbroker somewhere and i figured they're trying to cheat
24:51us so i voted for number one number three will you tell us please what your real name is and what you
24:56do my name is john lowe i'm the assistant stage manager for no no nanette he is my mother is ruby keeler
25:04and this is the fourth time in seven weeks that i've been on to tell the truth

25:26he's good he is good yeah good jeff my friend are you truly sponsored on this thing or did you
25:34do it by yourself well the ride itself i wasn't sponsored and i'm working on a national trail system

25:44senator udall and i mean secretary udall and uh several other important the uh the the taota company
