The move to introduce the technology comes after a number of violent incidents at the annual carnival
Transcript
00:00It was announced recently that live facial recognition technology would be rolled out at this year's Notting Hill Carnival on the August bank holiday.
00:12The move comes after significant concerns over safety at the annual event following a number of violent incidents at last year's carnival, including two murders.
00:26However, a number of anti-racism and civil liberty groups have now raised concerns about this decision.
00:34They said the introduction of the technology at Carnival was deeply disappointing and argued it could be less accurate for women and people of colour.
00:47These groups, including Liberty, Big Brother Watch and the Runnymede Trust, highlighted an ongoing judicial review bought by Sean Thompson, a black Londoner who says he was wrongly identified by the system and detained.
01:06A letter from these mentioned groups to the Met Police also raised concerns over a 2023 National Physical Laboratory study, which found the so-called neo-face system used by the force was less accurate for women and people of colour, depending on the algorithm that has been set.
01:31However, the Met Police says live facial recognition is accurate and balanced across ethnicity and gender and insists it will help keep people safe.
