Wrexham AFC is adjusting to life in the EFL Championship after a historic return to England’s second tier for the first time in 43 years.
The club, co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, achieved three consecutive promotions, culminating in their Championship debut in August 2025.
Facing stronger competition, Wrexham has invested heavily in new signings, including Nathan Broadhead for £10 million, to bolster their squad.
Despite a challenging start, including a 2–1 loss to Southampton, the club remains determined to establish themselves in the Championship.

00:00now for Wrexham of course
00:04they're preparing for a season in England's second tier
00:07which is the championship after what has been
00:09let's be honest a meteoric rise
00:11since they were taken over by their Hollywood owners
00:13of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
00:15a few years ago
00:16they were in non-league football
00:19when the two of them took over the Welsh club
00:21and now they're in England's second tier
00:23and just one promotion away from the Premier League
00:25it's been quite the rise
00:27obviously a lot of money pumped into them
00:29as a club which is
00:31unfortunately probably the way that things have
00:33to be done if you're wanting to achieve
00:35success in the modern game of football
00:37in this country
00:38so what can Wrexham achieve this season
00:41certainly they've been busy
00:43so far in the transfer market
00:45once again bringing in a whole host
00:47of new players to the club
00:49trying to make them competitive for the championship
00:52they've done this all the way through
00:53they've understood that you can't just be competitive in one league
00:55and then be promoted and then expect the same players
00:58to once again be good enough
00:59you have to build as a club
01:00and some players unfortunately get left behind in that journey
01:03but they've done what they were brought in to do
01:06for that period
01:08but now they're heading into England's second tier
01:10and they're looking to compete
01:13whether promotion is on the cards this season
01:16perhaps might be a step too far
01:18for them after of course all those successive
01:20and back-to-back promotions they've had
01:21in the journey up to this point
01:23but the championship is a hard, hard league
01:26but I think they'll certainly give it a good crack
01:29so to find out exactly where they're at
01:31in terms of their spending
01:31what they've done so far this summer
01:33and also what they can achieve going into the championship
01:36let's go now to our Wales sport correspondent
01:39Charles Hague-Jones
01:40Charles, let's look at Wrexham's spending so far
01:43Charles, what can you tell us
01:44and what are you expecting from Wrexham this season?
01:47Yeah, Wrexham's transfers have been pretty unbelievable really
01:55as we mentioned before
01:56they have broken their transfer record a number of times
02:00I believe the last time that they actually broke it
02:03before they broke it this summer
02:04was something to do with the 1960s
02:08this is a record that's been standing for so long now
02:11for Wrexham
02:13they're a club who are certainly on the rise
02:14they're a club who, as it's been well documented
02:17are showing found interest in the Premier League
02:21in making that step up
02:23one thing that sort of interested me
02:26and I think could come to bite them in the long term
02:29is the fact that their assets
02:31they don't really have many young players
02:34who are going to be
02:35sort of pushing them across the line
02:38and inventing to sort of get a bit more profit
02:41in terms of outgoing transfers
02:43but if that's the way these owners want to do it
02:46I mean that's the model
02:47they've gone for the last few seasons
02:49and they've gone back-to-back-to-back promotions
02:51an EFL record
02:52to make it another promotion
02:54you know, that is the biggest ask at the moment
02:58I think that's going to be an incredibly tough task
03:00they've obviously got Birmingham City League 1 winners
03:03you know, you can't forget they've come up with them
03:04you've got the teams dropping down from the Premier League
03:07who are going to be right up there again
03:08and there's teams who have also invested and have takeovers
03:11for example
03:12Phil Parkinson's side
03:14have got so much, you know, confidence going forward
03:18there's obviously, you know, concerns about the squad quality
03:22for the second tier
03:23can they get that consistency?
03:26but, you know, you have to look at their home form
03:29if they return home
03:30they haven't lost at home in so, so long
03:33not at all last season
03:34if they can continue that at the racecourse ground
03:38it would be simply groundbreaking for Parkinson's side
03:41and who knows where they could end up
03:43they've got that run of back-to-back home games
03:46obviously including the EFL Cup
03:47from game week 2 to game week 5
03:50I mean, that is interesting to see
03:51how West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday
03:53you know, QPR, Derby
03:56these sides are going to fare
03:57and then obviously October comes
03:59and you have that Hollywood Derby
04:01that's dubbed between Wrexham and Birmingham City
04:04that's going to be interesting as well
04:05I mean, I think they will
04:09at the moment avoid relegation
04:11how narrowly we'll be suggesting
04:13we'll see how that gets on
04:14but I think people are overlooking Wrexham this season
04:17I don't think they're going to be up there
04:19challenging for promotion
04:20just because of the, you know, sort of
04:23yes, they've got experience
04:24but are they consistent with that model?
04:27We'll see
04:27I do think they will survive though
04:29I think there's worse teams in the Championship
04:31there's worse teams who haven't invested as well
04:33we'll see
04:34but for Wrexham fans it's very interesting
04:36they have to be delighted
04:38and just enjoy every moment
04:40to be back in the second tier
04:42we'll see you next time
