00:00Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League with an emphatic 3-0 victory over West
00:04Ham United, thanks to goals from Anissa Mayenda, Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidore.
00:09Yes, happy. Happy for the fans, happy for the club, the players, the staff. We worked
00:17well the last six weeks to be ready for that first fixture here at the Stadium of Light.
00:25So, go again.
00:26In the build-up to this game, you talked about the pillars of what made this team successful
00:32last season, spirit, togetherness, and we saw that in abundance today.
00:37Yeah, I think Granit told at the end of the game in the dressing room two or three words
00:44and he talked especially about this togetherness, the way we can suffer together. Sometimes
00:49it's tough on the pitch. We have to defend maybe a bit deeper with 11 players.
00:56And I think we did well today from just two, three, four strong periods. And when we had
01:05the opportunity to counter-attack, we used this opportunity to score.
01:12And Newcastle United began their Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa.
01:20Newcastle was certainly the more dominant side in the first half and could have gone ahead
01:24just a couple of minutes into the game when Anthony Alanga broke past the defence, but his
01:29shot was saved when Anthony Gordon was an option to his left for a tap-in. Newcastle continued
01:35to press, but the lack of a striker and focal points in their team with Alexander Azak, not
01:40part of their squad at present, was beginning to show. Into the second half, Villa started
01:46the stronger, but Newcastle then came back into the game and nearly went ahead again. But
01:52this time, as Anthony Gordon broke through of the defence, he was pulled down by Esri Concer.
01:57This resulted in a red card for the Villa defender, but Newcastle were unable to take advantage of
02:04Villa being down to 10 men, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Frustration for Newcastle, but
02:09a point away at a tough opponent.
