Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha shone but Altay Bayindir struggled as Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League. Cunha and Mbeumo were both named in the starting line up, with Benjamin Sesko on the bench while Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund both missed out altogether.

United started as the better side but fell behind when Bayindir was bullied from a corner and Riccardo Calafiori headed the ball over the line from close range. Ruben Amorim’s side responded well to the setback and went close when Patrick Dorgu fired an effort against the post and Cunha drew a fine stop from David Raya.

Mbuemo fired a spectacular overhead effort just wide of the post and then saw a header saved by Raya as United searched for a deserved equaliser. It wasn’t to come as an improved United side fell short in both boxes.

00:00Good evening from Old Trafford. Manchester United experienced a defeat on the opening weekend of the Premier League
00:06after a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal. Riccardo Califiori was the only goal of the game after an error from Altai Bayinder in the United goal.
00:15Ruben Amorim had dropped Andre Onorna and Rasmus Holum from the squad.
00:19Although post-match, Amorim's just said that Onorna wasn't dropped, he just couldn't play him,
00:24given that he's not featured in any of the pre-season matches. Too much of a risk to play him.
00:28But given the mistake that Bayinder made, perhaps that is something he will regret saying in hindsight.
00:34So United lose 1-0. Plenty of positives to take from the results, but that doesn't mean that everything is fixed.
00:42But, you know, far from that. Amorim and Cunha both very good. Cesco looked lively from the bench as well.
00:48But ultimately, as Roy Keane said on Sky Sports, United have still lost the match, and that is how they will be defined this season.
00:54Performances have to be better. They do look like they could be better this season.
00:59But United still lost against Arsenal in a game that had very few chances.
01:03United will still bemoan the refereeing. It was controversial not to give them a penalty right at the end.
01:09And Cunha was taken out in the box.
01:11But the real test now comes against Fulham next weekend and against Burnley at home in two weeks' time.
01:18Man Utd look reinvigorated, refreshed, and have new ideas with their new summer signings.
01:23You know, they spent over £200 million on them.
01:26But once again, they've ultimately been undone by a lack of focal point in attack.
01:33Like we said, that should come when Cesc goes up to speed.
01:34And the fact that they've just let in far too many easy goals.
01:38It was another goal from the set-piece.
01:40Whipped in towards the back post.
01:41Play in, they got pinned down.
01:43Calfiore tapped it in on the line, really.
01:45So, we will see if United are the real deal this season or not.
01:49It certainly seems like there's improvement on the way.
01:53The fans are well behind the team today.
01:55And, you know, they've got a very loyal support.
01:57Some were shining.
01:58There were new players.
01:59And it felt different.
02:00You know, United have gone from a front three that had Rashford and Garnaccio in it
02:03to one that has Mbwemo and Cunha.
02:06So, full time from Old Trafford.
02:08While I'm trying to redo my hair.
02:10Man Utd, Neil, Arsenal won.
02:12But enough positive in that performance to suggest this season could be different.
02:17Certainly, it can't be worse than last season, can it?
