00:00:22In 1965, Walt Disney brought another Disneyland ambassador, Julie Ream,
00:00:28to our Imagineering Department, and described his plans for the attractions you're going to see today.
00:00:35Now, that big hole that we talked about earlier, well, this is what's going to go in that big hole.
00:00:41This is what we call New Orleans Square.
00:00:44And here's a picture of it from the riverfront as it will look when it's finally finished.
00:00:49And all these little streets are going to be very intriguing, little shops and things,
00:00:54and people can wander around in there.
00:00:56And then in here, we have a special attraction.
00:01:00We call it the Blue Bayou Lagoon.
00:01:05People are going to get on a boat here, ride through the lagoon,
00:01:11and then as they get around here, we're going to take them down a waterfall
00:01:13and take them back into the past, into the days of the pirates, you know,
00:01:19where the whole Caribbean area was full of pirates,
00:01:21and they're always sacking towns and things.
00:01:24Do you believe in pirates, of course?
00:01:26Oh, yes.
00:01:27Do you want to see some?

00:01:31Now, you take this little miniature here,
00:01:34it's taken first from a sketch.
00:01:36We make these sketches to figure out the types and the characters.
00:01:39This will animate when we have it in the show, you know.

00:01:44Now, these sketches here have to do with some of the things that are going to happen
00:01:48when you take this cruise with the pirates' domain.

00:01:58He's got one foot on the dock and one foot on a rocky boat.
00:02:01But, you know, as the people go by, they see him, he's struggling and everything.

00:02:05Well, he can't make it, or the show would go to pieces, you see.
00:02:08He has to stay there all the time and keep trying to get away.
00:02:12Okay, now we'll go around and see the town that the pirates are sacking.

00:02:18Here are the pirates in here, ransacking and carrying away loot.
00:02:23Now, over here, Julie, is the town.
00:02:24This is the Caribbean town of the period.
00:02:27And if you get down here and look to that little ring,
00:02:30you'll get the view that the audience gets.
00:02:32Now, here you see the pirates are dunking the mayor into the well,
00:02:36trying to force him to reveal the hiding places of the town treasure.
00:02:39The audience will be seeing this from a boat, you know.
00:02:44And all the characters will be life-size and lifelike in their movements.
00:02:49These fellows have found the town's rum supplies.
00:02:53But they're actually more interested in what's taking place across the river.
00:02:58Here, their shipmates are auctioning off the town beauties.
00:03:02And there's the biggest bargain of all.
00:03:10That is absolutely fantastic.
00:03:12Well, that's only part of it.
00:03:14We've got a big climatic scene.
00:03:16But how could you top it?
00:03:17Well, we set the place on fire.
00:03:20And we have our audience trapped down in this flaming city.
00:03:24How can they get out, then?
00:03:26Well, now, you got into this mess by going down a waterfall.
00:03:29Now, how would you suppose we could get them out of there?
00:03:31By going up the waterfall.
00:03:32That's right.
00:03:33Anything's possible at Disneyland.

00:03:39And everything in Disneyland began as an idea
00:03:42at a unique branch of the Disney organization called Wed Enterprises.
00:03:47Here are the skills of the sculptor and the talents of many artists
00:03:50combined to create the amazing audio-animatronic cast
00:03:53of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:03:55For their parts in the show,
00:04:00even the boldest buccaneer was groomed and dressed in his Sunday best.

00:04:12The audio-animatronic performers in the Pirates of the Caribbean show
00:04:21are an example of imagineering at work.
00:04:25As its name implies,
00:04:27audio-animatronics begins with sound.
00:04:31Recorded on tape,
00:04:32the sound can be played back at any time,
00:04:35always on cue.
00:04:36The coined word animatronics represents a special kind
00:04:41of three-dimensional animation.
00:04:44Here's a rehearsal for the scene
00:04:45where the town mayor is dunked in the well
00:04:47every 20 seconds all day long.
00:04:52The third key to audio-animatronics
00:04:54is the electronics of the space age.
00:04:58Using complex equipment and systems,
00:05:01these specialists are programming
00:05:02every movement of every pirate
00:05:05and also the more subtle movements of their prisoners.
00:05:10When all three processes,
00:05:12sound, animation, and electronics,
00:05:15were finally combined and synchronized,
00:05:18the pirates began to come to life.
00:05:19Meanwhile, other craftsmen
00:05:24were preparing the scene of battle
00:05:25for the arrival of the buccaneers.
00:05:28Canvas sails began to show the signs of battle,
00:05:31bullet holes, and gunpowder burns.
00:05:34The old Caribbean town was given an aged look
00:05:36with the usual care and precision.
00:05:40And finally,
00:05:41it was almost time for the pirate crew to set sail.

00:14:27And I love the color. It's great to see the color of the rock work because, see, who would have thought of doing blueish gray rocks,
00:14:33but the lighting in there plays off of that paint much better than it would if they painted them naturally with browns and warm tones.
00:14:44That's why it's just so mysterious and so magical down here.

00:15:29And one of the main rides and attraction will be a boat ride where we take you back into the days of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:15:44In order to do that, we get in this boat and we have to take you down waterfalls and get you down below into this big, huge acre and a half building where you actually go to an old Caribbean town that the pirates are looting, burning.
00:16:02And the pirates are getting a little drunk, firing all over the place, just missing the people in the boats. It's quite an exciting thing.
00:16:12And they're animated.
00:16:14They're all what we call audio-animatronic figures, the same as Abe Lincoln.
00:16:19Now, we got them down the big hole here.
00:16:22The public don't know where. They're in the Caribbean as far as they know.
00:16:24But actually, they're outside the park and in this big hole.
00:16:27Well, we got to get them back up so we have to, we bring them up a waterfall.
00:16:32Ever been up a waterfall?
00:16:34Come up a waterfall. It's quite an experience.
00:16:36We do have some working models set up that we want to take you on a tour of with.
00:16:42We have one full-size scene set up in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
00:16:48You might explain why we do this.
00:16:51In this sort of a business, you need, you're working in three-dimension.
00:16:54And we build three-dimensional models in various scales as we go along.
00:16:59To start out with, we'll build a very small scale model to begin to get the feeling of the area.
00:17:04And then, as we get further along, we build a larger scale model.
00:17:07And then, for some of these things, we build a full-scale mock-up.
00:17:12Now, we don't put all the final details and things, but we work it out here.
00:17:16So, when we get down to install down there, I mean, we've got it all planned and things.
00:17:21We don't have to be ripping out or our installation of all the electrical work and things is all taken care of.
00:17:29So, we found, and this is the way they do now.
00:17:31I know I was visiting Werner von Braun.
00:17:33He builds full-scale cardboard mock-ups of his rockets to go up to the moon.
00:17:39So, I'm right in line with the modern techniques of the space age.
00:17:45So, we're building full-scale mock-ups here.
00:17:47And we can work a lot of bugs out before we ever get down to installing it.
00:17:52You'll see one-inch scale of the whole pirate ride if you want to go through it.
00:17:56And then, you'll see the full-scale.
00:17:58This plant is the only plant of its kind in the world. We're very proud of it.
00:18:02You won't find another plant like this in the world.
00:18:05It's research for, you know, for what you might call nonsense, fantasy, and all that kind of stuff, you know.
00:18:14Often regarded as Disneyland's best attraction,
00:18:17Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the last attractions Walt Disney worked on.
00:18:21It was also the first major attraction to open after he died at the end of 1966.
00:18:24Discussions about a pirate museum began in the late 1950s and, in fact, the park's 1940s and, in fact, the park's 1958 fun map even placed the wax museum approximately where the boat ride would later be built.
00:18:39In 1960, Walt Disney made his first public announcement of the new attraction at the opening ceremonies of Nature's Wonderland.
00:18:45A year later, the name of Pirates of the Caribbean appeared with a preview in the park souvenir book.
00:18:52These early hints suggested that the attraction would be a walk-through rogues gallery displaying famous pirates of the Spanish Maine depicted as drunken buccaneers in a tavern.
00:19:01Construction on something pirateish began in 1961, but the project's construction was interrupted for at least two years so the company could concentrate on Disney exhibits for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair.
00:19:15Disneyland's 1963 souvenir book then mentioned an upgraded Pirates of the Caribbean presentation featuring a bayou voyage with the shadowy painting of pirates studying a treasure map conveyed nothing about the actual ride experience.
00:19:30Two years later, the 1965 souvenir book raised expectations by describing how audio-animatronic pirates would come to life and attack, burn, and loot a city in what promises to be Disneyland's longest and most action-packed attraction.
00:19:46That same year, Walt Disney further fueled excitement by showing off models of the coming attraction to a national TV audience on Walt Disney's wonderful World of Color.
00:19:55While guests were excited for the opening of New Orleans Square in mid-1966, everyone was especially primed for pirates.
00:20:02Due the following spring, and they weren't disappointed, heralded by an official opening that featured the nearby sailing ship Columbia, decked out with a Jolly Roger, the e-ticket Pirates of the Caribbean attraction was a combination of creative, technological, achievement, and ride design at the time.
00:20:19No other park in the world had anything nearly as sophisticated, and for that matter, neither did Disneyland.
00:20:24For the first time, Imagineers had implemented audio-animatronic humans on a grand scale.
00:20:29Previously, their audio-animatronic figures have been either relatively primitive mechanical animals, or a single person viewed from a distance.
00:20:37Pirate's Ride, however, featured 75 audio-animatronic humans and another 50 or so audio-animatronic pigs, donkeys, chickens, and dogs,
00:20:47cavorting through realistic settings that included a trip through the bayou, a plunge down two 21-degree waterfalls, a raging storm, a fort, and a life-size pirate ship called the Wicked Winch,
00:21:00lobbing cannonballs at each other, and a town engulfed in flames, and a trip back up a waterfall.
00:21:07All of this was viewed from only a few yards away. Indeed, more incredibly, all of it presented indoors.
00:21:15The attraction was a tour de force of imagination and engineering.
00:21:19Park rides no longer had to be short and compact.
00:21:22This one was slow, about 16 minutes long, and covered 1,800 feet of canals that held 630,000 gallons of water.
00:21:30The 46 shallow boats traversed three levels in two big new buildings, one of them built across what was formerly Magnolia Park.
00:21:39The other was built outside the park's perimeter berm.
00:21:42Both buildings covered a total of over two and a half acres.
00:21:45The cost to create such an elaborate attraction in the mid-1960s, some $8 million,
00:21:51almost half of what it had cost to build the entire park a decade before.
00:21:56The press and the public immediately recognized the magnitude of Disney's monumental achievement.
00:22:03Pirates of the Caribbean was the last attraction which Walt Disney himself participated in designing.
00:22:08It opened on March 18, 1967, three months after his death.
00:22:13It was originally envisioned to be a walk-through wax museum attraction.
00:22:17However, with the success of a boat ride concept of It's a Small World at the 1964 New York World's Fair,
00:22:24Disney decided to employ a similar concept on Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:22:28The original installation was manufactured by Aero Development.
00:22:32The attraction's passenger-carrying boats are very similar to those in a patent assigned to Walt Disney Productions
00:22:38and filed by Edgar A. Morgan, one of the founders of Aero Development.
00:22:44There are 64 human and 55 animal audio-animatronics in the attraction.
00:22:49It was located within the New Orleans Square portion of Disneyland.
00:22:52It's facade-evoking antebellum-era New Orleans.
00:22:56Taught by a 31-star United States flag which would indicate the 1850s.
00:23:01Overhead sign at the boat dock names it for the famous pirate Jean Lafitte,
00:23:06who fought alongside the U.S. Army at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812.
00:23:11Back in the day, when there were two channels at the load area,
00:23:14the boats went through an automatic switching gate and staging that was the source of many downtimes.
00:23:20The first drop is 52 feet at an angle of 21 degrees,
00:23:24and the second is 37 feet, also at 21 degrees.
00:23:28This is necessary to get the boats under the railroad tracks,
00:23:31as the main show building is actually outside the tracks.
00:23:35To create the fire effect, there is one piece of fabric hanging from a bar.
00:23:38Onto it is projected orange and red and yellow blinking lights.
00:23:42Finally, a fan is added to blow the fabric slightly, and it creates the fire effect.
00:23:46The fire marshal had Disney install an automatic shutoff in case of a real fire,
00:23:51because the fake ones in the Burning City look so real.
00:23:54The fog that drifts out from behind the boat in the battle area is the Mii Fog effect.
00:23:59Water is shot through a small hole at a thousand PSI.
00:24:02The hole is smaller than a hair from your head.
00:24:05Hence the Mii Fog slogan, Real Fog,
00:24:08because it forced out so fast the water condenses just like real fog does.
00:24:13With a cannonball hitting the water effect, it is done with an air cannon,
00:24:16just compressed air under the water.
00:24:18Near the end of the ride, the white-haired prisoner is actually a replica of a janitor who worked there.
00:24:24Guests also get to go up a 90-foot waterfall at a 16-degree angle.

00:46:49and they had based the film on our Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
00:46:53The ride had been running the same way with minor enhancements throughout the years.
00:46:58Now there are children who see the movie first and then the ride, and they're going to say,
00:47:03I don't understand why the people from the movie aren't in this ride if they made this
00:47:07ride about the movie.
00:47:09We actually, as Imagineers, you know, we're always looking at ways of giving all of our
00:47:14attractions a new, fresh look.
00:47:16And we actually had been working on ideas of what are some of the things that we can
00:47:21do to bring new technology, new magic, into our classics.
00:47:24We figured out a way to bring in the Captain Jack Sparrow figure and the Barbossa figure
00:47:30into the ride.
00:47:31The whole idea was they were always there.
00:47:34The ride should look like they were always there and they were meant to be there.
00:47:37So we didn't take any scenes out.
00:47:39We sort of inserted them.
00:47:41The riders for the film did such an incredible job of taking the essence of the Pirates'
00:47:48attraction and bringing that into the movie so seamlessly that it was very natural that
00:47:55Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa really were sort of born out of the attraction that they
00:48:01sort of seamlessly belonged in theirs.
00:48:04The two different modes of entertainment have to live together.
00:48:09And it was a really interesting problem.
00:48:11I say interesting.
00:48:12It was agony to try to get this right because we did not want the original inspiration to be changed.
00:48:19The entire team was very aware of the value of that attraction.
00:48:25And our goal was always to enhance the classic and not change it.
00:48:29And I think we were very successful in bringing Barbossa and Captain Jack into the attraction.
