00:24The people mover was certainly one of the most visible of the 1967 new attractions.
00:29Backed by the smooth music of Disney legend Buddy Baker, the little blue, green, red, and yellow cars slid leisurely along a winding, elevated track that took them across the Tomorrowland entrance into the Adventure Through Inner Space Building, where they can be seen by guests standing in line, past the shoppers in the character shop, and as of late 1970s, inside Space Mountain, in and out of the Carousel Theater, near the Submarine Lagoon, through the waiting area of the Circarama Theater.
00:57Just got a scenic 16-minute tour of Tomorrowland.
01:01The people mover was truly different from any other futuristic transportation in the park.
01:06While the monorail was an old idea in a new showcase, the people mover was a new concept developed by Disney engineers and introduced for the first time anywhere in Tomorrowland.
01:16Those engineers had first experimented with people mover technology in their magic skyway ride at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair.
01:23There, the new propulsion concept was used to push unpowered vehicles along a track like factory cars being moved down an assembly line.
01:34Imagineer John Hench actually got the idea from a Ford plant where he watched steel being moved on tracks from area to area.
01:43Two years later, a similar system propelled Disneyland people mover, unlike the monorail and other trains in the park.
01:49People mover trains themselves weren't motorized. The track was.
01:53Rubber tires mounted every nine feet along the three-quarter mile track were powered by electricity to push the people mover gently along at walking speeds ranging from about two to seven miles per hour.
02:04Usually, four people at a time could fit comfortably on the bench seats inside one of the cars, which had white canopies to shield in from the sun.
02:12With four car trains running nonstop and with guests stepping directly into their seats from a moving walkway, almost 4,900 passengers could be moved through the attraction per hour.
02:24Surprisingly, Goodyear, which made its name selling car tires, sponsored this mass transit system from 1967 to the end of 1981.
02:33Please remain seated during your tour, keeping your hands and arms inside the vehicle and kindly refrain from smoking. Thank you.
02:42You are now beginning a grand circle tour of Tomorrowland aboard the people mover, the first system of its kind in the world.
02:50Since its 1967 opening, the people mover has carried more than 50 million guests.
02:55Your tour of Tomorrowland will cover three-quarters of a mile and will give you a close-up look at many shows and attractions as well as previews of many others.
03:04Across the way is Star Tours, a thrilling new adventure inspired by the George Lucas Star Wars films.
03:13Hello, I am C-3PO, and this is my counterpart, R2-D2.
03:20Welcome to the Star Tours to Tomorrowland spaceport.
03:24Just below us is the Star Traders.
03:27And the key system in this coordinated network will be the Wedway people mover.
03:32The first people mover installation is already in daily operation at Disneyland.
03:53The only way to see it all is to ride the Wedway people mover.
03:56These vehicles never stop moving, even while passengers board and disembark from a rotating platform.
04:02Just beyond the people mover station is the new mural featuring old Mr. Energy himself.
04:24The people mover is no mere amusement ride.
04:27It was designed for intermediate speed transportation within cities.
04:31The cars have no motors.
04:33Power is supplied from a series of motors embedded in the track.
04:37So no single car can ever break down and cause a rush hour traffic jam.
04:41Someday a system like this may even pass through the downtown buildings in your community.
04:46Just as it travels through Tomorrowland's pavilions today.
04:50Aboard the people mover you can preview every attraction in Tomorrowland and then come back later to see the whole show.
05:05Passengers aboard the people mover continue their tour.

05:19And in the carousel of progress you can get a view of tomorrow, a model city of the future.
05:26It's based on a concept developed by Walt Disney for a community he called Epcot, experimental prototype city of tomorrow.
05:33Realistic to the smallest detail, this animated model is a living blueprint of new ideas and systems for future cities.

06:18When the people mover moves outside Tomorrowland's buildings, it becomes a scenic highway in the sky traveling across the Magic Kingdom.
06:38And, uh...
06:42At watermelon, possible at our sides?
