00:00Gone, but not forgotten.
00:05Beneath the trees that line the road leading to the Desert Corps Memorial in Albany,
00:11hundreds of plaques, overlooking King George Sound,
00:15where many soldiers, departing in ships for the battlefields in France,
00:21caught their last glimpse of Australia.
00:23They call them Section 95ers, a dozen men from the prison farm near Mount Barker.
00:30Working in the community, building this 600-metre pathway as a commemorative trail,
00:37winding past the men and women remembered there.
00:41This is basically Albany's version of King's Park, I suppose.
00:45You know, there's several hundred plaques here,
00:47commemorating those who, you know, paid the ultimate sacrifice in the war
00:51and for Padlup Prison, you know, Department of Justice, to be a part of that
00:54is quite an honour and very humbling.
00:56I think it was just really great to be a part of something so significant
00:59in the way of, like, a memorial and, you know, the Avenue of Honour
01:03and look across at a plaque and think, um, think they would have had it
01:08back when they went to war, you know.
01:10Special, too, for a veteran who, for the past 30 years,
01:14has kept the plaques visible for visiting families of the fallen.
01:19I come up here regularly and I clean the, uh, some of the plaques away here
01:23where the trees fall on them.
01:25The first tree on the right is Private Bell, Vietnam Vet,
01:28so I'm always a special significance to him
01:30and he's got a couple of beers they were put there.
01:33And we pay homage every Anzac and, uh, Vietnam Veterans Day.
01:38Across the estate, there's more than 150 prisoners who are veterans
01:42and, uh, you'd imagine that over time when we do projects like this,
01:45they'll have an opportunity to contribute to something
01:47that'll be close to their hearts.

01:51A legacy spanning generations
