00:00The importance of today is that this marks 80 years since the final end to the Second World War,
00:05the Victory Over Japan Day.
00:07Three months after Victory in Europe Day,
00:10and many of those who came back felt that they were the forgotten army,
00:14and so we owe them that duty to remember them as we are today
00:18in this National Service of Remembrance at the Arboretum,
00:22and with events right across the country and around the world
00:25in the way that public buildings right across the UK will be lit tonight
00:28to mark the huge sacrifice that many made, British and Commonwealth troops,
00:35and the hardships that they faced, not just in combat,
00:39but in the jungle, with tropical diseases,
00:42and the very many who also died in prisoner of war camps.
