00:02Yeah, these are the tears of the cloud.
00:05Maz's Tears.
00:07The second tear.
00:08Hold on, let me get my pen.
00:09Maz's Tears.
00:11Dallas.
00:12Buffalo.
00:13Tennessee.
00:14Maz's Tears.
00:16Third tear.
00:17Okay, here we go.
00:17Hold on, let me get my pen.
00:19Maz's Tears.
00:21Tears.
00:22Tears.
00:23Tears.
00:25Mark Dondaro is a passionate guy.
00:27I don't know if I've ever seen him so fired up.
00:30For one segment.
00:30If you're not watching on NBC Sports Boston, he has the Terminator sunglasses going on.
00:36He took out a hockey stick we have here in studio and was playing the air guitar.
00:42Now, do you play guitar, Dondaro?
00:44No.
00:45Do you want to learn how to play guitar?
00:47I'll teach you.
00:48No.
00:48You don't want to learn.
00:49You know how?
00:50Yeah.
00:51I play guitar.
00:52No.
00:52I have other interests.
00:54Such as?
00:54Golf.
00:56It's a good interest.
00:57Strong interest.
00:58Like that.
01:00Maz's Tears is always brought to you by the Bernardi Auto Group.

01:16The segment is yours.
01:18The floor is yours, Mark.
01:19But I'm always interested in the origin of Maz's Tears.
01:22You texted me on Monday.
01:24You had your tears.
01:25You were ready to go.
01:25What is the origin and what is the topic for today's tears?
01:29So the topic is best Boston sports soundbites.
01:34Or Boston sports soundbites.
01:35I don't know if best is the word you want to have in there.
01:37The origin?
01:38I don't know.
01:38I just...
01:39It has to be a best.
01:40It's a tear.
01:40Yeah, best.
01:41Fine.
01:41The best or worst.
01:42The most notable, most notable maybe.
01:45A while back, years ago, I used to produce something on TikTok.
01:48It was like a top 10 type of list thing.
01:51Just content that I enjoy creating.
01:54It never really had a platform.
01:56This is the type of platform that I thought maybe people would enjoy in the tears format.
02:00I enjoy.
02:01I always like lists.
02:02So I thought this particular one would be a decent, especially if we were in here when
02:07the guys weren't in here on a Thursday.
02:08It's like, let's do a Maz's Tears.
02:10So we got Maz's Tears.
02:11The best or most notable sports, Boston sports soundbites.
02:16All right?
02:16So let's look at tier number three.
02:18We'll go from tier three up to tier one.
02:20Tier number three.
02:21Okay?
02:22Kyrie Irving.
02:24If you'll have me back, I plan on re-signing here.
02:27Now, I had some mixed emotions about this one.
02:29Feel free, Matty, to jump in at any point.
02:31I had some mixed feelings because it was so negative.
02:34But I felt like that comment was so outrageous for how he said it and the way he said it to
02:40the season ticket holders.
02:41And it sort of shaped the dynamic of the Celtics for a few years and opened the door for Tatum
02:46and Brown.
02:46It was so noteworthy up in front of everybody like that.
02:49I had to put it on here.
02:50Terry Francona.
02:51Okay?
02:51A couple on this list you might not remember.
02:54Frank Kona, I forget, 04 or 07.
02:56Do you remember this?
02:57I don't.
02:57When he was asked about Kevin Euclid being the Greek god of walks, Billy Bean dubbed him
03:03the Greek god of walks.
03:04He replied, I've seen him in the shower.
03:07He's not the Greek god of anything.
03:09Tito Francona on Kevin Euclid.
03:11I loved it.
03:11I just thought it was funny.
03:12It wasn't really noteworthy.
03:13I loved it.
03:14Tito, that showed his personality.
03:16I think it was 04.
03:17Might have been 07.
03:18The next one, Josh Beckett.
03:19Here's another one you might have forgotten about.
03:20Oh, I remember this one.
03:21Yeah, this was awesome.
03:22After game five, Red Sox were down 3-1 in the ALCS to the Indians.
03:26They brought in, Cleveland did, his ex-girlfriend.
03:29She was some country singer to sing the national anthem, try to mess with them or whatever.
03:34He goes out there.
03:34He shoves.
03:35He's asked about it.
03:36And his quote is, I don't get paid to make those bleeping decisions.
03:40She's a friend of mine.
03:40It doesn't bother me at all.
03:41Thanks for flying one of my friends to the game so she could watch it for free.
03:44I loved it.
03:45It kind of encapsulated what Josh Beckett was back then and the attitude.
03:49They won the game.
03:50They come back.
03:50They win the series.
03:51That was awesome.
03:52It was a great moment.
03:52Tom Brady.
03:53Here's another one you might have.
03:54It sort of goes under the radar.
03:56After the snowball game, I think it was Tom Curran in the press conference.
04:00He asked him, Tom, were you throwing the ball?
04:02And obviously the famous player of the tuck rule.
04:04And Brady said, yeah, I was throwing the ball.
04:07Looking to the left, I was going to throw it and he hit me.
04:09I was throwing it.
04:10How do you like that?
04:11With a smile on his face.
04:12Just savagery at that moment.
04:14And that's when you've sort of gotten the, you know, this guy is cool.
04:17This guy is him.
04:18All those different types of things were in play in that moment.
04:21Another one here.
04:24Joe Mazzula.
04:25Okay.
04:26Asked about Christoph Porzingis this past year when he was bleeding.
04:29There's a ton of Joe Mazzula, but I like this one.
04:31I like watching him bleed on the court.
04:33I think it's important.
04:34Who did important bleeding?
04:36I love it.
04:37Okay.
04:38I've never heard bleeding described as important.
04:41So that's what stood out to me.
04:42And a lot of Joe Mazzulas we could have had, but I had to narrow it down.
04:45Obviously, Rick Pitino not walking through that door.
04:48Wait a minute.
04:48Rick Pitino tier three?
04:50Tier three not walking through the door.
04:51This is not a tier with integrity.
04:54Doesn't matter.
04:55Out the window.
04:55That's a tier one.
04:57Not walking through that door.
04:58There was nothing associated with any type of substance.
05:02The only regret I have about that is it wasn't during the Felger and Maz era.
05:06I would have loved to have seen that exchange during the era of talk radio.
05:09We're still talking about that 25 years later.
05:12We're still referencing that.
05:13I don't think it didn't matter.
05:14That's in the sports lexicon.
05:16This is tier three.
05:17Oh, that garbage.
05:18All right.
05:18Get that out of here.
05:18Get that way up there.
05:20Way up.
05:20Tier one.
05:22Fine.
05:22Okay.
05:23And the last one on this list.
05:25Larry Bird's not walking through that door, fans.
05:27Kevin McHale's not walking through that door.
05:29And Robert Parrish is not walking through that door.
05:32And if you expect them to walk through the door, they're going to be gray and old.
05:35How is that not?
05:37Tier one.
05:38I don't know.
05:38Back me up on that.
05:39That has to be a tier one, right?
05:40Should it be higher, Jimmy?
05:41It should be a tier one because at the time Rick Pitino came in here, he kicked red out
05:47of the presidency spot.
05:49And then he failed and failed miserably.
05:52Okay.
05:52So that's a tier one.
05:53Fine.
05:53I'm not saying it's perfect.
05:54This might have been a misstep there.
05:56The last one.
05:56Might have.
05:57I guess this is Tim Thomas.
05:59After game four, I think it was in the Stanley Cup final 2011, when talking about Roberto
06:05Luongo made some comments.
06:06I guess I didn't realize it was my job to pump his tires.
06:09I guess I have to apologize for that.
06:10I love that in the moment.
06:12I love the mentality Thomas had there.
06:13All right.
06:13Let's go to tier two.
06:15Why don't we do it on the other side of the break?
06:17Yeah.
06:17We got to get a headline.
06:18There we go.
06:19All right.
06:1990 seconds, no commercials, a quick update for Mark Dondaro, then a tier two and tier
06:25one and the Maz's tears, the Dondaro's tears, Mark's tears, come up with something there
06:31on the greatest Boston sports soundbites of all time.
06:35I've been around and when Jim Rice was booed, I've been around with you.
06:38It's been booed and it stinks.
06:39It makes the greatest town, greatest city in the world lousy.
06:43And if you think I'm going to succumb to negativity, you're wrong.
06:47You got the wrong guy leading this basketball team.
06:49No, you're definitely not going to succumb to negativity, Rick.
06:53Nothing about that whole experience is negative at all.
06:56See, I think if it was a list on the best rants, obviously that, but I was thinking more
07:01of the quote.
07:01It should have been higher.
07:02It should have been at least a two.
07:04I'll own that one.
07:05All right.
07:06Next, tier two.
07:08Kevin Millar, don't let us win today because we got Petey in game five, Schilling in game
07:13six, and anything can happen in game seven.
07:15I didn't think it was, because it was sort of casual, that's why it wasn't higher.
07:21He was saying it to Shaughnessy outside of the batting practice line or whatever.
07:24So I could have made it higher, but it was too casual, so I didn't have it as high.
07:28Bill Parcells, if you want to cook the dinner, if they want you to cook the dinner, at least
07:33they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.
07:35January 97.
07:36That was a noteworthy, all-time comment from Parcells.
07:39It encapsulated the relationship at the time and really was probably at the foundation
07:44of why he ended up going to the Jets and bolting after that Super Bowl, but he was great
07:48with the media and his bites were good.
07:49Both very strong.
07:51Very, very strong.
07:52Both those.
07:53I think it speaks to how strong tier one might be.
07:55They want you to cook the dinner.
07:57At least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.
08:00Okay?
08:01I love it.
08:02January of 2023, at the town hall meeting, it's expensive to have baseball players.
08:09John Henry.
08:11I just, again, with the times that we're in right now with the Red Sox, that was an unbelievable
08:15thing to say to those people.
08:17They're booing.
08:18He's defensive.
08:19It just was crazy that that came out of his mouth based on what the Red Sox had become.
08:23That was on the list.
08:24Okay.
08:25I'm going to make the decisions that I think are the best for the team.
08:29T-E-A-M as in team.
08:30Bill Belichick, 2001, during the debate whether or not it should be Tom Brady or Drew Bledsoe.
08:38A very meaningful and important quote in the history of Boston sports when he said that.
08:44Obviously, the Pedro Martinez one.
08:48Which one?
08:48Okay.
08:49So this Pedro Martinez one.
08:50What can I say?
08:51Tip my cap and call the Yankees my daddy.
08:54So there's two Pedro on here.
08:55That's the first one.
08:56Because I thought when 2004 was going on, all the chants leading into the ALCS.
09:00I mean, you thought they might have owned Pedro.
09:03But the Red Sox were able to bounce back and win the series.
09:06I think that's got to be tier one.
09:08I need to see tier one first.
09:10But Pedro called the Yankees my daddies is so iconic.
09:13And led to that whole thing in the ALCS in that year.
09:17I mean, what can I say?
09:19Just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddies.
09:23It's so good.
09:24It's good.
09:25But I like the other Pedro one better.
09:28That quote, the full quote is,
09:29I don't believe in damn curses.
09:31Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him.
09:34Maybe I'll drill him in the ass.
09:36I don't believe in damn curses.
09:38Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him.
09:41Maybe I'll drill him in the ass.
09:42See, I like that one better.
09:43I love that.
09:44That spoke to the mentality that the team needed at that time.
09:49Screw this curse.
09:50We're cursed.
09:51This is how I feel.
09:52And he was perfect for that.
09:53How about Pedro's 10 years ago,
09:56I was under a mango tree without 50 cents to ride the bus.
09:59That's another classic.
10:01That's a good one.
10:01How about Kareem Garcia?
10:02That was a miss.
10:03I could have had that.
10:04Who are you?
10:05Who are you, Kareem Garcia, to try to test Pedro Martinez?
10:09If Gerald wants to cry, let him cry.
10:12There's the clubhouse one?
10:13The clubhouse is my house.
10:15If you sneak into my house and I don't know who you are, I will shoot you.
10:19I forgot.
10:22What a gem.
10:23There's this one too?
10:25Are you praying?
10:26How do you know?
10:28You better.
10:30Man, I forgot about how good he was behind the mic.
10:34The only other one, tier two, the Mona Lisa Vito, January 2015 when they were talking about the flake gate,
10:40and I'm not the Mona Lisa Vito, like she is in the car industry.
10:46All right.
10:46So that's tier two.
10:47We've got to see tier one.
10:48Tier one.
10:48There are a lot of good ones in there that I want to judge you for not putting in tier one, but I got to see tier one.
10:54Feel free to rip me to any snubs I want to hear about them, you know, but this is my tier one.
10:59All right.
10:59First one, and I think this is the top one of all.
11:02We are all Patriots, and tonight the Patriots are world champions.
11:05So well said in a moment where the nation was still grieving the Patriots, the improbable victory over the Rams in the Super Bowl,
11:14and it was just such an organic moment.
11:16I love that quote, and it was up there with meaning and not just sports meaning, but national meaning.
11:22I felt like it was just well-placed and well-placed.
11:25David Ortiz, kind of a similar vibe here.
11:27This is our bleeping city, and nobody going to dictate our freedom.
11:31Stay strong.
11:32Sometimes you just have to drop a good F-bomb, and that was the time.
11:36I know there was kids, everybody in the stands, they're alive.
11:39It doesn't matter.
11:40You had to do it right there.
11:41He had to get that point across.
11:42That was an iconic moment.
11:43The fact they went on to win the World Series made it even better.
11:47Speaking of winning, anything's possible.
11:50Kevin Garnett, so much emotion and passion and raw energy there after the championship.
11:55Right the minute they win it on the floor, Michelle Tafoya trying to get the mic up to his face.
12:00That was an all-time moment.
12:02And then, obviously, on to Cincinnati, because Bill Belichick's podium presence in his press conferences were so legendary.
12:09That was one of the iconic takeaways from not just his time behind the microphone as the Patriots head coach, but that season.
12:16How Brady, they were so bad, and you thought they might move on.
12:19And then Brady comes back, wins three championships, and it was all kind of the on to Cincinnati aura where it began.
12:25So that had to be on the list as a Tier 1 category.
12:29This jersey that we wear today, it doesn't say Red Sox.
12:33It say Boston.
12:34We want to thank you, Mayor Menino, Governor Patrick, the whole police department, for the great job that they did this past week.
12:41This is our f***ing city, and nobody's going to dictate our freedom.
12:48Stay strong.
12:49Undeniably Tier 1.
12:51Here's my objection to your tiers, Mark.
12:54There should have been more in Tier 1.
12:56Okay.
12:57Parcells belongs in Tier 1.
12:59How about Parcells?
13:00How's Terry Glenn?
13:01She's fine.
13:02Oh, I forgot about that.
13:03That's a good one.
13:03Okay, there's a snub.
13:05Pedro Martinez, call the Yankees my daddies.
13:08Has to be Tier 1.
13:09Okay.
13:09Maybe Wake Up the Damn Bambino is fine in number 2 because Tier 1 is the best.
13:15I don't believe in damn curses.
13:18Wake Up the Damn Bambino and have me face him.
13:20Maybe I'll drill him in the ass.
13:22I definitely, she's fine.
13:24I definitely wish I had.
13:25She's making progress, yeah, I think.
13:28Shouldn't be too much longer.
13:30And the Kareem Garcia one, I wish I thought of that one.
13:32That was one that was.
13:34Who are you?
13:34Who are you, Kareem Garcia, to try to test Pedro Martinez?
13:39Johnny Gomes fighting people in the supermarket.
13:42That feels like a Tier 3 type of one.
13:44I don't know.
13:45There's so many.
13:45I don't remember that one.
13:47Oh, Johnny Gomes said, basically he said, if somebody, you know, comes up to you in the
13:51supermarket and wants to fight you, you're just going to let him do it.
13:53I don't have much patience, nor do I have much time right now to be in an arguing match.
13:59I'm the guy you want to go to war with.
14:02What if you're at a grocery store and the guy right next to you in line is pointing at you
14:06and yelling at you?
14:07Are you going to go get security or are you going to do something right there?
14:12I didn't remember that one.
14:14So I knew there were going to be some that I forgot.
14:16I knew that I put myself at risk for some blatant snubs.
14:21The Patino one should have been higher.
14:23We miss any, Jimmy?
14:24Those are the ones that come to mind for me.
14:26I'm sure we did.
14:27I'm trying to go through all of my drops to find ones that historically over the years
14:32have cracked me up.
14:34You do have that advantage.
14:35And actually, I would say, Jimmy, you probably are one of the most qualified people in Boston
14:40to have an opinion on these tiers because you've been enhancing talent since 2000 and
14:44playing all these cuts.
14:47So as always, you know, should have been higher.
14:50I would have had more Pedro stuff, but that's my own Pedro bias because he's my favorite Red
14:55Sox of all time.
14:56He's arguably the greatest pitcher not named Roger Clemens to ever pitch for the Red Sox.
15:01So that's why I'm biased towards Pedro as much as I am.
15:05I'd have to think a little bit more about that.
15:06But I think you've got the basic generic Dendara.
15:10I would have had Patino tier one just because I've heard it over and over and over.
15:13I would have had more Pedro in tier one.
15:16What about this?
15:17This is the only other one I thought of, but I didn't know if it was a soundbite.
15:20Did Dan Duquette say out loud?
15:22More days in first place.
15:24Or what about...
15:26Dan Duquette was on the Ted Sarandis show, and he was going through the post-mortems of
15:31the Red Sox collapsing or whatever it was, and he had the legendary line.
15:35Well, we spent a lot of days in first place.
15:38In fact, more days in first place than any other team this year.
15:41I had another one said to me, it didn't get on here, but it was...
15:47Didn't John Farrell say something about we have five aces or five number ones or something
15:52like that?
15:52That was one.
15:53What about Dan Duquette in the twilight of his career?
15:56Was that a soundbite?
15:57Roger Clemens is in the twilight of his career.
15:59That could have probably been considered.
16:02I'm Bloom.
16:03We're going to do this.
16:03It's going to be awesome.
16:06So many.
