02:36So much for that guidebook.
02:43You know, Barkley, there's something about the people here.
02:47They all look different somehow.

03:49But I have absolutely no idea.
03:54This is some place, huh Barkley?
03:59It sure looks a lot like New York City.
04:00Except here, there's more people from Ohio.
04:01Boy, oh boy, oh boy.
04:02Wait till we tell the gang on the bus.
04:03The bus?

04:11I'm sorry.
04:12The bus is a bus.
04:13It sure looks a lot like New York City.
04:14Except here, there's more people from Ohio.
04:15Boy, oh boy, oh boy.
04:16Wait till we tell the gang on the bus.
04:17The bus!
04:18The bus?
04:19Bob! Bob, come back!
04:31Oh, come back! Oh, I can't believe it!
04:34Look, they went off and left us!
04:36Now what are we gonna do?
04:38We can't speak Japanese.
04:41We don't know anybody here.
04:43I don't have hardly any money.
04:45Do you have any money?
04:46Of course not. You're a dog!
04:50Oh, no!
04:52They've got our plane tickets and everything.
04:56Oh, well, don't be scared, Barkley.
05:00Oh, we'll be okay.
05:02I mean, I've got a little money and some birdseed and a doggy biscuit.
05:13I don't know about you, old buddy, but I'm starving.
05:16Shall we spend a little of our money on a bite to eat?
05:20Oh, look.
05:21Uh, that looks like fish.
05:23And that's some kind of meat.
05:25So we'll get the meat for you, because you're a doggy.
05:27And I'll get the fish, because whenever I visit my cousin Bernie the seagull,
05:31we have fish and it is delicious!
05:33I don't know if you're a doggy.
05:34I don't know if you're a doggy.
05:35Oh, oh.
05:36Uh, hello.
05:38Uh, we'll, uh, we'll, uh, we'll take up that one, and that one.
05:43Uh, well, that one and that one.
05:44Uh, well, that one and that one.
05:46Uh, well, that one and that one.
05:49Uh, well, that one and that one.
05:50Uh, well, that one and that one.
05:54But it's not made as a product.
05:55Please, go to the shop.
05:56That one and that one.
05:58Come on, Barclay.
06:08Come on, Barclay.
06:12Come on, Barclay.
06:16Come on, Barclay.
06:20Come on, Barclay.
06:24Do you understand this?
06:26I can't eat anything.
06:28It's a偽物.
06:30Well, that one's for me and that one's for him.
06:34Well, that one's for me and that one's for him.
06:40This one here and that one there.
06:52Here's the money.
07:00Hey, some restaurant.
07:02They didn't even give us any silverware.
07:05What do they expect us to eat with?
07:07These little sticks?
07:10Well, might as well dig in.
07:20Boy, talk about stale.
07:22I've been waiting for you.
07:24I've been waiting for you.
07:28Let's go.
07:30Let's go.
07:32Okay.
07:36Oh, that's what they're for.
08:02I'll try.
08:06Oh, okay.
08:11Hey, that was fake food in the window.
08:16Boy, what a dope I've been.
08:19Oh, hey, don't mind.
08:21Oh, my God.
08:26Oh, my God.
08:31Oh, my God.
08:34Oh, my God.
08:46That was delicious.
08:48Oh, no, no, no.
08:53What a swell guy.
08:55Oh, my God.
09:11Oh, my God.
09:12Uh, don't tell me.
09:13Ohio, right?
09:14Oh, Ohio.
09:16Hi.
09:17Hi.
09:18How did I know?
09:21Let's see if we can figure out where we are.
09:23Um, well, that first one there looks like it might be a little birdcage with a perch on top.
09:32And the one under that might be a bread box.
09:35Oh, but that doesn't make any sense.
09:38Oh, what a mess I've gotten us into.
09:41At least on Sesame Street, I knew the alphabet.
09:46Oh, I'll never see Snuffy again.
09:49Oh, Maria, or Grover, or anybody back home.
09:53Barkley, I'm so homesick.
09:56Oh, why did I come to this faraway place?
10:02Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh, where everyone talks in Japanese?
10:10But they say they're from Ohio.
10:14I miss New York where you eat with a fork and English comes in handy.
10:22Gee, things were sweet on Sesame Street where the people all understand me.
10:32There's a friendly nest where I love to play.
10:42On a friendly street that is far away.
10:50And I want to be there right now.
10:54Can't wait for a plane.
10:59Cause I'm homesick, homesick, homesick.
11:06If I ever get well, I'll never leave home again.
11:16There's a teddy bear and he waits for me.
11:24There's a friend named Snuffy that I have to see.
11:33Don't have a fever, but I do feel a pain.
11:41Cause I'm homesick, homesick, homesick.
11:49If I ever get well, I'll never leave home again.
11:59Gee, it hurts when you think of your friends at home.
12:03On the street you left behind you.
12:07When you're lost on the other side of the world.
12:11And no one will ever find you.
12:15Boy, you can say that again.
12:31I don't have a fever, but I do feel a pain.
12:40Cause I'm homesick, homesick, homesick.
12:49If I ever get well, I'll never leave home again.
12:57Do you know the Japanese word for homesick?
13:14What?
13:15Uh, no.
13:17Do you want to hear it?
13:19Yes.
13:20The way you say homesick in Japanese is homesick.
13:25Really?
13:26Just the same?
13:27Just the same.
13:28Oh.
13:29Now, what's the matter?
13:32Maybe there's something I can do.
13:34Well, we were on a tour, see, with a lot of people on a bus.
13:38And the lady in charge said,
13:40Don't go away for more than five minutes.
13:43But we got so interested in all the people from Ohio with black hair.
13:48And they left without us.
13:50And I can't speak Japanese, and I miss Snuffy, and he can't speak anything.
13:56The tour went on without you?
13:58Yes.
13:59What kind of a tour would abandon a bird and a dog in a strange country?
14:04Well, probably the kind of tour that would take a bird and a dog along in the first place.
14:11And where was your tour going from here?
14:13Well, I don't know.
14:14Lots of places.
14:15Try to think.
14:16Can you remember anything?
14:19No.
14:20Oh, boy.
14:22What was it the guide told us when we got off the bus?
14:26Think, big bird.
14:28Use your bird brain.
14:30One day in Kyoto, to see everything there is to see there, and we fly home on the 15th.
14:42Ha-ha!
14:43Oh!
14:44Oh!
14:45Oh!
14:46Oh!
14:47Kyoto!
14:48And fly home from there on the 15th!
14:52So that's where we've got to get to by when, but how?
14:57Kyoto!
14:58So maybe you can catch up even there.
15:01But where's Kyoto?
15:03West of Tokyo.
15:05Wait, how many miles?
15:07About 300.
15:08300 miles?
15:09Wow, that's a long way!
15:10Kyoto is my home.
15:11And I have to be there on the 15th too.
15:12So maybe we can go together.
15:13No kidding.
15:14No kidding.
15:15I have a friend's car, but we can drive as far as Hakone.
15:16And after that, we can take the Shinkansen.
15:17The Shinkansen who?
15:18Shinkansen.
15:19A train.
15:20A train.
15:21A very first train.
15:22So we can all be in Kyoto by the 15th?
15:25Yes.
15:26Oh!
15:27Oh, Oh!
15:28Oh, Barkley!
15:29Did you hear that?
15:30Barkley!
15:31Did you hear that, Barkley?
15:32Oh!
15:33Oh, Barkley!
15:34Hey!
15:35We're gonna go home.
15:36Come on!
15:37Oh, Oh!
15:38Yeah.
15:39Can we go home?
15:40That's a long way.
15:41Yes.
15:42Come on!
15:43Oh, Barkley!
15:44Hey!
15:45Hey!
15:47Hey!
15:48Hey!
15:49We've got to go home!
15:50Oh, Barkley!
15:51Hey!
15:52Hey!
15:53Go home!
15:54You got to get home!
15:55Oh, that's about Kyoto! Oh, pardon me, that's so good!
15:59If you were so worried...
16:01Sayonara, Tokyo.
16:25Oh, Kyoto is a very pretty city.
16:29The prettiest in the country, so they say.
16:33The capital of the nation in its bay.
16:36You think we'll find our tour there?
16:38We'll find Yuta for sure there.
16:40Then come on, Bartley, let's be on our way!
16:43We're off to Kyoto, like Dorothy and Toto.
16:47We've really got to go-to, or else we'll miss the plane.
16:50We're off to Kyoto, 300 miles or so-to.
16:54I've got feathers, he's got fleas.
16:56I speak Japanese.
17:08I'm coming out of Tokyo with my doggy on my knee.
17:11And I'm going to Kyoto where a tour bus waits for me.
17:15What else is in Kyoto?
17:17There's the Imperial Palace.
17:19Gee, I always wanted to play at the palace.
17:24When I'm in Kyoto, I'm gonna take a photo.
17:29Of things from long ago-to, and one for you and me.
17:32It's up to Kyoto.
17:34We're going awful slow-to.
17:36Soon we take my shinkansen.
17:38I can't wait till then.
17:42We're off to Kyoto, and not to Buffalo-to.
17:45No rain or sleet or snow-to.
17:47We'll keep us from Marco.
17:48So ta-ta to Tokyo.
17:50Hi, hi, Kyoto.
17:52I'm a bird and he's a hound.
17:54I'm a friend that you have fun.
17:56And like Webster's Dictionary, we're Kyoto-pan.
18:05This is a house of my parents' friends that she misses.
18:18They said they would be honored to have two American guests tonight.
18:22Really?
18:23We can stay here?
18:24That's neat.
18:25Big Bird?
18:26Hmm?
18:27Now, there are some things which you need to know.
18:31For what?
18:32To visit a Japanese home.
18:33Oh.
18:34Before one enters a Japanese home, one must take off one shoes.
18:39Check.
18:40We take off our shoes.
18:41You got that, Barkley?
18:42Yeah.
18:43You got that, Barkley?
18:44Yeah.
18:45Yeah.
18:46Yeah.
18:47Yeah.
18:48Yeah.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Yeah.
18:51Yeah.

18:54Yeah.
18:55Yeah.
18:56Yeah.
18:57Yeah.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Yeah.
19:00And when one meets the host, it is customary to kneel down.
19:05What?
19:06Sure.
19:07Kneel down.
19:09It is a form of bowing to show respect.
19:12And the deeper one bows, the more respect one shows.
19:19Want to try it?
19:20Sure.
19:21Okay.
19:22I bow to you to show you that I honor you.
19:30and I bow back to you like this come on Barclay let's see a bow bow and if I

25:28You know, it's weird.
25:31She shows up out of nowhere and helps me in Barkley and then just disappears.
25:41And I don't even know her name.
25:45Maybe she's the Lone Ranger.
25:47She's the Lone Ranger.
25:48She's the Lone Ranger.
25:53Well, here we go again.
26:00Good morning!
26:13Good morning!
26:15Well, here we go again.
26:19Ohio?
26:20Hi!
26:21Good morning!
26:22You know, I think all of you are just swell, and you've been really good to me and
26:28remarkably, but if one of you is from Ohio, you could knock me over with a pin feather.
26:33They are not from Ohio, Big Bird.
26:36Ohio is Japanese for good morning, and hi is Japanese for yes.
26:42So, when someone says Ohio to you, he's saying good morning.
26:47And when you say hi to a Japanese, he thinks you are saying yes.
26:52Thank goodness!
26:54I was beginning to think there was nobody left in Cleveland.
26:58Mariko and Akiko can teach you some other Japanese words.
27:02Want to give it a try?
27:03Oh, yeah!
27:04Big Birdに歌を歌ってくれない?
27:06はい!
27:07One, two, three is itchini-san.
27:15Itchini-what?
27:17Itchini-san.
27:19Ohio means good morning.
27:21That's my favorite one.
27:23But one, two, three is itchini-san.
27:27Please is so-so.
27:29Yes, yes, hi.
27:30Sayonara means goodbye.
27:35Arigato, thank you.
27:37Now we're nearly done.
27:39And one, two, three is itchini-san.
27:43Now we have an examination.
27:45Oh, no, an examination?
27:48Ready?
27:49Well, I'll give it a try.
27:51One, two, three is itchini-san.
27:56Perfectly correct on question number one.
28:00Ohio.
28:01Good morning.
28:02That's my favorite one.
28:04But one, two, three is itchini-san.
28:08Please.
28:09Is dozo?
28:10Yes.
28:11Is hi.
28:12Sayonara means goodbye.
28:16Arigato, thank you.
28:18Now we're nearly done.
28:20Backwards, 3, 2, 1.
28:22It's 3, 2, 1.
28:24It's 3, 2, 1.
28:30It's not part Hakone.
28:35I must return the car.
28:37Say goodbye to friends there.
28:39And tomorrow we take the Shinkansen to Kyoto.
28:43Bye-bye.
28:45Sayonara!
28:47Sayonara!

29:10Why are you going all around Japan saying goodbye to everybody?
29:14Because after tomorrow night, I won't see them again.
29:18Hey!
29:19You're leaving tomorrow night too?
29:22That's when we're supposed to leave.
29:24The 15th.
29:25I know.
29:27Wee!
29:28Wee!
29:29Wee!

30:09Like, you've been so nice to us, and I really like the Shimizu family, and I've learned some Japanese words.
30:17But we have to find you a tour.
30:19Oh, sure, because they've got our plane tickets and everything.
30:23We know they have to be at the airport tomorrow night, so don't worry.
30:28But that's what I mean. I'm not worried.
30:33Whee!
30:35Oh, he wants you to throw the stick for him.
30:37It's alright, you just pull the handkerchief off him, you can throw it.

33:28Moon, moon, I don't know what's coming
33:33What do you see?
33:38Moon, moon, what's in store for you and for me?
33:44Moon, moon, moon, I don't know what's coming

34:00I feel so alone, but I have to go home tonight
34:08Moon, moon, higher than a kite
34:16That's broken in its dreams
34:18Moon, moon, sailing like a sheep
34:25Over everything
34:29Moon, moon, moon, I don't know the future
34:35What can you say?
34:40Moon, moon, what you gonna bring my way?
34:46Sometimes the darkness pours something bright
34:55Sometimes the sadness dripped into morning sweet sight
35:00I feel so hefty born tonight

37:35And you made a panda
37:39Oh
37:41Oh
37:43Oh, I see
37:45Hi, yeah, hey
37:49Come on, Barkley
37:50I don't know where we're going, but...
37:50Come on, Barkley. I don't know where we're going, but let's go.
38:20Come on, friends. Let's look at the story of Kaguya-hime. Please be quiet and be careful.
38:40Once upon a time, in old Japan, near the city of Kyoto, there was a forest of pretty green bamboo trees.
38:59In this forest lived an old man whose job it was to find the best bamboo trees and cut them for market.
39:07One night when he was at work in the forest, as it happened it was a night of a full moon, he saw something very strange.
39:17A bamboo stump with a golden light glowing inside of it.
39:24He called for his wife to come and see.
39:27And when they looked inside the stump to see where the light was coming from, they discovered a tiny, beautiful girl.
39:38The old woodsman and his wife were delighted.
39:42They took the beautiful child home with them to raise as their own daughter.
39:46The entire village came out to celebrate the arrival of the little bamboo princess.
40:01Her parents named her Kaguya-hime, which means the shining princess of the bamboo.
40:06And just as the bamboo grows from a tiny sprout to a tall tree in only a few months, so Kaguya-hime grew in just a few months into a beautiful woman.
40:19The word of the lovely bamboo princess spread very quickly throughout the land, and rich and powerful men came from all over Japan to seek her hand in marriage.
40:31One said,
40:35Marry me, Kaguya-hime.
40:37I am the richest man in Japan.
40:40Another said,
40:41No, no, marry me.
40:42I am the bravest warrior in Japan.
40:44The third said,
40:45Pay no attention to these two.
40:47Marry me, Kaguya-hime.
40:53Still more handsome and famous men came to court the beautiful bamboo princess.
40:59But Kaguya-hime spoke to them very sadly.
41:05I cannot marry you, as I cannot marry any man on this earth.
41:11I am a princess from the palace of the moon, and I was placed here on earth for only a short time.
41:19On the night of the next full moon, at exactly midnight, a mission is coming from the moon to take me back.
41:29I have grown so fond of my dear mother and father, and of all the people and places of Japan, that it breaks my poor heart to have to say farewell to them.
41:45Kaguya-hime's mother wept bitterly at the thought of losing her beloved daughter, and asked,
41:50When is the next full moon?
41:53And Kaguya-hime answered with terrible sadness,
41:57On the 15th of the month.
42:00Tonight.
42:02And almost as she spoke, the procession from the moon appeared to escort the tearful princess back to the palace of the moon.
42:10But her old mother and father always believed that one day another golden light would appear in a bamboo stump in the forest to signal that Kaguya-hime had come back to them on earth.
42:32And who knows, perhaps one day, Kaguya-hime will return.
42:42Oh no, we've only got 20 minutes!
42:49Oh, come on, Barkley, we're gonna miss our train!
42:52Oh boy, am I lucky they got an American clock here!
42:55Come on, Barkley!
43:18Wait, wait, here we are!
43:21Here we are!
43:22Oh, oh, oh, oh, I'm sorry we're late!
43:25See, the grass took us to school and we saw a play about...
43:27It's alright, hurry!
43:28Oh, okay, get on the train!
43:37I'm sorry we were late again, but we were watching this play about a bamboo princess.
43:43That's alright, but today is the 15th, so if we are going to find your tour,
43:49and if you are going to go back to America tonight...
43:52I know, I know!
43:54We'll never get lost again!
43:58Ever, ever, ever!
44:00I have so much to do before midnight.
44:06Now, wait here this time, okay?
44:09Don't even think of wandering off again!
44:12Oh, you can count on us!
44:15I am one reliable bird!
44:19Now, you hear that, Barkley?
44:22Don't you move!
44:23You stay!
44:24You stay!
44:27Where did she go?
44:33Oh!
44:39Gee, did you see that, Barkley?
44:42Whoop!
44:43Come on!
44:44Whoop!
44:54Wow!
44:58The Sanju Sangendo Temple.
45:02Boy!
45:03What a mouthful!
45:06In this beautiful temple are 1,000 golden images of Canon Bodhisattva.
45:17To see that no harm comes to the 1,000 images, and to frighten away intruders,
45:24there are also in the temple a number of ferocious gods and goddesses standing guard.
45:54тем alias and goddesses,
45:59gory tabs do not fall into the trap of Deviah gerade.
46:04All, that's unique!
46:06Owww!
46:08Teacher pot's just back.
46:10Neo would be innist and giant howling do not fall into the unattain stage.
46:15They're all in for the long the agelam Prozent.
46:18And with his blanc sundown ibrahimit are quite as much!
46:20You will be after all the cast,
46:21Barkley! Barkley! Barkley! Barkley! It's me, Big Bird! Barkley!
46:51I'm sorry. It's alright.
46:59I promised to stay where you left us and I didn't. And then I lost Barkley.
47:05Now, even if we find the tour at the airport, I can't go home without him.
47:11Of course not.
47:14You know something funny? What's that?
47:17I still don't know your name.
47:21Kaguya-Hime.
47:23That's a beautiful name. Seems like I've heard it somewhere before.
47:36It's a full moon tonight.
47:38Yes. This is called the Moon Viewing Village.
47:44The fish gather when you do that.
48:01Do you have anything to feed them?
48:03There's some birdseed in there. They can have that.
48:16There's a biscuit in here. May I give it to them?
48:20I'd feel funny giving that away. It was Barkley's.
48:26Of course.
48:30Come.
48:33Oh, Barkley! Oh, you found him! Oh, Barkley!
48:37Oh, Barkley! Oh, Barkley!
48:38Yes.
48:39And, I found your tour at the airport.
48:45This time, they know to wait for you.
48:48I don't want to leave yet.
48:58I know.
49:00I want to know everyone better.
49:03You, your friends, and the children.
49:06There's so much to see and so many different things to understand.
49:12And, now I have to leave.
49:14Just when I'm beginning to catch on.
49:17You can come back to Japan another time.
49:23Are you coming to the airport?
49:27No.
49:28Will you ever come to America?
49:35I don't think so.
49:39Won't we ever see you again?
49:43Perhaps.
49:47I feel terrible.
49:49I'm homesick for Japan, and I haven't even left yet.
49:54This is a night we both have to say goodbye.
49:59Try to be strong.
50:03Do you know what the Japanese say about bamboo?
50:08They say it is thin, but it can withstand the strongest wind.
50:15Remember the bamboo tonight.
50:18It can make you strong.
50:20Oh, but you keep it.
50:23It'll make you strong, too.
50:29Thank you, big bird.
50:33Barkley.
50:43Bye.
50:45Bye.
50:47She's gone again.
51:05Pretty paper houses, funny twisted trees
51:15All the little children speaking Japanese
51:21And a mountain shining through the sun and the rain
51:30Make me homesick, homesick, homesick
52:00I gotta go home, but I will come back again
52:21Sayonara, Japan
52:26Hey, wait a minute
52:30Kaguyahime, I knew I heard that name before
52:35Come on, Barkley, she needs us now
52:56I know, I know, I know
53:05I know, I know, I know
53:09I know, I know, I know
53:13I know, I know, I know

53:22I know, I know
53:26I know, I know
53:31I know, I know
53:35I know, I know
53:40I know, I know
53:42I know, I know
53:44I know, I know
53:52I know, I know
53:57I know, I know
53:59I know
54:01I know, I know
54:03I know, I know
54:05I know
54:22Hi Barkley, what you got?
54:39Well, this looks like our stick, but hey, we're in the middle of a bamboo forest.
54:52Come on Barkley, I was wrong, and that plane won't wait forever.
55:20Arigato.
55:22Didn't we have some time, Barkley?
55:29We met so many nice people, and we learned some Japanese words.
55:34You know, I'll bet we did more and saw more and learned more than if we never got lost at all.
55:41And how about that Kaguya Hime?
55:46You know what?
55:48I actually thought for a minute there that she was the bamboo princess.
55:55It was because she had the same name.
56:02She kept appearing and disappearing all the time.
56:07The moon seemed to make her so sad.
56:09Stuff like that.
56:14But you and I know that in real life, bamboo princesses don't hang around helping lost birds and dogs.
56:26They gave.
56:27Here we are.
56:29Bye.
