The Trump administration warned Monday that overturning Trump’s tariffs could threaten Social Security, Medicare, and millions of jobs, according to Axios. Solicitor General D. John Sauer and Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate told a federal appellate court that reversing the tariffs could require the U.S. to refund trillions from trade deals, risking economic collapse. The warning comes as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit weighs whether to uphold or overturn a May decision striking down most of Trump’s tariffs. Sauer and Shumate said the administration would pursue a new tariff program if the current one is voided, but argued it would be less effective. Trump has cautioned that a negative ruling could trigger a new Great Depression. Piper Sandler has called his trade deals illegal and predicted a Supreme Court loss by June 2026.
