Pin in the endgame is a far more dangerous tool than in the openings
00:04
because you have very few pieces, if any, to defend the piece that is pinned.
00:18
Let's look at a couple of positions where we can realize the power of the pin.
00:25
And this is an endgame. It looks very simple.
00:31
Rooks, two rooks, two knights, four pawns.
00:36
It seems there's no more excitement left.
00:40
But for a moment, black created this potential problem
00:47
by having rook and knight at the same line.
00:50
But if white simply tries to pin with rook and three,
00:54
then king defends the knight, and we have nothing.
01:03
We don't have any way of putting more pressure on this knight.
01:07
So that's why all we need is just to make an intermediate check.
01:12
Rook e2.
01:13
We're attacking the king, and if king runs on d4, then we do a fork.
01:18
Remember? Fork.
01:18
Double attack, king and rook, winning the material.
01:23
And if king goes on f5, then we'll go rook e3, and then we'll win because of the pin.
01:28
Black has no way without sacrificing an exchange and having a totally lost endgame.
01:34
So it's important.
01:36
Just another important thing, intermediate move.
01:40
Often happens.
01:41
You can easily miss it because, you know, you look at moves like rook e3 to create immediate threat,
01:49
but actually rook e2 wins because it destroys black's coordination, so pushes the king.
01:57
So that's also quite a useful example.
02:00
Let's see.
