Sainte Jeanne-Françoise Frémyot de Chantal (1572-1641) est l’une des grandes figures spirituelles de la France du XVIIe siècle. Née à Dijon dans une famille noble, fille de Bénigne Frémyot, président au Parlement de Bourgogne, elle connaît très tôt le mariage heureux avec Christophe II de Rabutin-Chantal. Mère aimante et attentive, elle goûte quelques années de bonheur familial avant de connaître un drame : la mort accidentelle de son époux.

Veuve à 28 ans, Jeanne traverse le deuil avec une foi profonde. Sa rencontre avec saint François de Sales devient déterminante : une amitié spirituelle unique naît entre eux, donnant à Jeanne la force et la vision de fonder un nouvel ordre religieux. En 1610, ils créent ensemble l’Ordre de la Visitation Sainte-Marie, ouvert aux femmes désireuses de vivre une vie consacrée dans l’humilité et la charité, même si elles sont fragiles de santé.

Au fil des années, Jeanne fonde plus de 80 monastères, tout en restant une mère spirituelle attentive. Sa douceur, son sens de l’accueil et sa détermination inspirent encore aujourd’hui des générations de croyants.

Sainte Jeanne de Chantal est canonisée en 1767 par le pape Clément XIII. Elle est la sainte patronne des veuves et des personnes en deuil. Sa vie est un témoignage lumineux : l’amour de Dieu peut transformer la souffrance en fécondité spirituelle.
