00:30Your lady's telling me take them off. I don't have to listen to it, but I will.
01:00Testing, testing. One, two, one, two. Do you have levels? Test. No problem.
01:14Mic check. One, two, three, one, two, three. Can you hear that? All right. Check, check, check, check, check.
01:18Is that still low? Mic check, one, two, three.
01:22I'm not getting anything. Hello? Are you guys picking up?
01:28You all ready? We're ready. You ready? Everybody ready? I don't know if he's ready or not.
01:50You ready? You ready, sir? Yeah. All right. This is one small big screen.
02:00All right. Everybody ready? Okay. All right. I'm Lisa Davis, chief of police, Austin.
02:28The police were initially called here at 2 15 p.m. for a hot shot call. Officers arrived within four minutes.
02:40When officers arrived, they were met with three people that were shot inside the parking lot of Target.
02:47The suspect fled the scene, stole a car from the scene, took that car, wrecked that car, then hijacked another car.
02:59He was then found by Austin PD in South Austin where he was taken into custody after a tasing.
03:07We have three people that are deceased. This is a very sad day for Austin. It's a very sad day for us all.
03:14And my condolences go out to the families. At this point, looking at the suspect, we have a male white suspect
03:19who appears to be 32 years of age, does have a mental health history. But again, all of that is very new.
03:25This is a new, very early in the investigation at this point, but he has been apprehended.
03:31I'd like to thank our public safety partners. Again, it is quite amazing to arrive on scene here and see fire and EMS, Austin AISD, all here helping and supporting.
03:41At this point, I'll go ahead and turn it over to Chief Lutgritz for some words.
03:46Good afternoon. Robert Lutgritz, Chief of Austin Travis County EMS. Austin Travis County EMS received our initial calls at 2 19 p.m.
03:57Four minutes later, first units arrived on scene at 2 23 p.m. The initial responding units arrived and found three victims.
04:06Two of those were pronounced on scene by Austin Travis County EMS. One was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced at the hospital.
04:13In addition, one additional individual was treated on scene for unrelated injuries. At that point, I'll turn it back over to Chief Davis.
04:23All right, we'll take a few questions. And again, understanding this is a very new investigation.
04:28Chief, I want to know where that car was hijacked and if the person was driving that car was injured.
04:34At this point, we believe that that was one of the people that was shot, but it was in the target parking lot where the first car was taken.
04:41The second car, the first car crashed. The subject then ran into, I believe it was a Volkswagen dealership to take another car.
04:48And is that, that car was hijacked from the Volkswagen dealership?
04:50I believe so, yes.
04:52What led to the shooting?
04:54We don't know if there was an altercation or what. At this point, we're looking at video.
04:58You know, people that are within target are moving out of target.
05:02We're moving some over here to the PetSmart and the Dollar General.
05:05If their car was involved or anywhere near the scene, they're going to have to stay here until the investigation is over and get another ride out of the area.
05:12But at this point, we're not sure what, not that anything, not that anything could, you know, perpetrate this.
05:19But no sense if it was random or if there was something that led up to it?
05:22Exactly, yes.
05:23I can't hear you.
05:24How many people were in the store? No, I don't know.
05:25It happened outside the store. Yes.
05:26Do you hear anything about the victims?
05:27We do not.
05:28I don't know anything about the victims at this point.
05:29No.
05:30I don't know that yet.
05:45We see that you take a lot of people inside of that store.
05:50What is that?
05:51That's right.
05:52Yes, that's emptying target.
05:53We want to empty the store and reunite them and get them out of here if they were not a witness to the scene.
05:58But the cars are going to have to stay here until we're done with the scene.
06:00Can you tell us where in South Austin the suspect was apprehended?
06:03I'm not sure.
06:04J.D., do you have an address in South Austin?
06:062,400 BAC of La Costa.
06:09Did he have any connection there or that's just where he was found?
06:12That's just where he was found.
06:13Was there a chase that led you guys?
06:15No.
06:16I believe it was a call for service.
06:17I believe the subject got out of the car.
06:19Another person called.
06:20I don't know what the behaviors were at that point.
06:22And again, we're talking this is within the last 25-30 minutes.
06:25So I want to get this information as quickly as possible to you.
06:28So what that call for service was, I'm not aware of.
06:31But officers responded quickly and apprehension was made.
06:34How much viewership was that?
06:36All I know is it was a Volkswagen that was taken.
06:38I don't know if it was a Volkswagen dealership, but it was a Volkswagen.
06:41He does have a sheet, a rap sheet here with us, but there is some emergency holds, detention holds.
06:51One more question.
06:54Again, our thoughts are with the family.
06:56This is a tragic time.
06:57Our thoughts are with the officers and EMS and fire who have to come and do the work here at the scene.
07:01Forensics, everyone that's doing the scene.
07:03Again, a special thanks to AISD for coming over and helping out.
07:06It was a big scene.
07:07A lot of cooperation and truly impressive, the amount of cooperation that the city alone does together.
