00:00Thank you very much, Zoe.
00:04I think it's very clear from listening to our presenters so far
00:09that the Republicans are acting because they have bankruptcy of ideas.
00:14They have no winning ideas to present to the American people,
00:18and they cannot defend their actions legitimately.
00:21So they're trying to do it and rig it illegitimately.
00:25I want to thank our governor for his leadership,
00:28his persistence in protecting and defending our Constitution and our democracy.
00:33Thank you, Governor Newsom.
00:34It's an honor to be here with the Speaker of the Assembly
00:37and the President Pro Tem of the Senate of our legislature
00:40and hear their clear message about what this means to California,
00:45but more importantly, to our country.
00:48And I join them in welcoming the courageous members of the Texas delegation who are here.
00:54We thank you, not only for your courage, but for your patriotism, for your patriotism.
01:00I've said to you before, at the beginning of our country,
01:03Thomas Paine said, the Times have found us.
01:06Times found them to form a new country, to write a constitution,
01:10and the rest, thank God, they made it amendable.
01:12And now the Times found Lincoln, then found Lincoln to save that country,
01:17the unity of that country.
01:18And now the Times have found all of us, and especially our Texas delegation,
01:24to save our Constitution.
01:26I'm from Maryland originally, and I'm very proud that the national anthem was written there.
01:30And my favorite line in the anthem is,
01:34proof through the night that our flag was still there.
01:38We have a responsibility to prove through the night of this Trump administration,
01:43the darkness of it all, that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for all.
01:50And that is what I'm so proud of the leadership of all of our California delegation in Congress,
01:56but also our state legislature as well.
01:59Zoe Loughlin has led the way as the leader of our House Democrats from California,
02:05in the unity that she mentioned about our delegation.
02:08And this is something that we're unified on to honor our oath of office to protect and defend
02:16the Constitution of the United States.
02:19The president has paved over the Rose Garden.
02:21He's paved over freedom of speech.
02:23He's paved over freedom of education.
02:25The list goes on and on.
02:28Independent judiciary, rule of law, pave it over, pave it over.
02:32But we will not let him, he's gone too far.
02:35We will not let him pave over free and fair elections in our country,
02:40starting with what he's trying to do in Texas, countering that.
02:44So this isn't two wrongs, as was mentioned.
02:48It's not a wrong in what we're doing.
02:50This is self-defense for our democracy.
02:54They have stricken, they have hid out at our democracy,
02:59and we are here to defend it.
03:01I thank again our Texans for their leadership, for their courage,
03:06most of all for their patriotism.
03:09And now I'm very pleased to yield to our distinguished leader in all of this effort,
03:14someone who was right out there right from the start,
03:16who brings us together, making us so very proud, our Governor Gavin Newsom.
