00:00Donald Trump made a bold promise to end the Ukraine war in 24 hours of taking office.
00:16But more than six months into his second term, the war rages on and Trump's own deadlines have come and gone.
00:27So what happened to the 24-hour promise and the latest August 8th deadline?
00:33And how did we get from confident ultimatums to delayed diplomacy and shifting blame?
00:39Let us look at the full timeline of Trump's repeated promises to end Russia's war in Ukraine
00:46and the pressure now mounting on the US president.
00:50But I stand here today and I'm the only candidate who can make this promise.
01:03I will prevent and very easily World War Three, very easily.
01:08Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, I will have the disastrous war between Russia and Ukraine settled.
01:18It will be settled quickly.
01:20Quickly.
01:22I will get the problem solved and I will get it solved in rapid order.
01:29And it will take me no longer than one day.
01:31I know exactly what to say to each of them.
01:33I got along with very well with it.
01:35Throughout his 2024 campaign, Donald Trump made ending the war in Ukraine a signature talking point.
01:44He claimed again and again that the war would be settled in 24 hours if he were elected president.
01:54According to CNN, he made that claim at least 53 times between March 2023 and October 2024.
02:03He argued his close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin gave him the influence necessary to broker a deal that President Joe Biden could not.
02:15On his inauguration day, Trump reiterated a broad call for peace.
02:29I will end the war in Ukraine.
02:32I will stop the chaos in the Middle East and I will prevent World War Three from happening.
02:38And you have no idea how close we are.
02:40Later that day, speaking with reporters, he commented on Putin's progress in Ukraine.
02:46Still, no plan or timeline was announced.
02:50Trump had not yet spoken to Putin, but he began signalling impatience.
03:03He posted on Truth Social, calling Russia's economy failing and offering Putin a chance to do the smart thing and end the war.
03:14Meanwhile, Moscow pushed back.
03:16Russia's deputy UN ambassador said the Kremlin needed clarity on what Trump's idea of peace deal actually meant.
03:32Trump and Putin finally spoke in what Trump described as a productive call.
03:37Trump said he spoke with Zelensky afterward, but made no commitment to include Ukraine as an equal partner in the talks.
03:55Even more significantly, Trump's defense secretary announced an end to U.S. support for Ukraine membership in NATO, a reversal of the long-standing U.S. policy.
04:07Zelensky remained diplomatic, calling the conversation meaningful, but it was clear Kyiv was sidelined.
04:14The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement.
04:25Instead, any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops.
04:34If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission, and they should not be covered under Article 5.
04:45By the end of February, Zelensky visited the White House, and the meeting turned tense.
04:57Trump, backed by Vice President J.D. Vance, criticized Zelensky for being disrespectful and not showing gratitude for U.S. mutual aid.
05:07He then abruptly canceled a Mineral's deal with Ukraine that had been built as a step towards economic cooperation.
05:14The next day, Trump suspended all military aid to Ukraine.
05:20Zelensky, while expressing regret, said Ukraine was still committed to working towards a peace deal.
05:33One of the biggest shocks came when Trump admitted he hadn't been serious all along.
05:40Still, he spoke with both Zelensky and Putin that week.
05:57Putin rejected a 30-day ceasefire, but agreed not to strike Ukraine's energy grid.
06:02Trump then suggested that the U.S. should take control of Ukraine's power plants for security reasons.
06:09Zelensky refused outright.
06:20By April, with no deal in sight, Trump started pointing fingers.
06:25Most importantly, you have millions of people dead, millions of people dead, because of three people.
06:32I would say three people.
06:33Let's say Putin, number one, but let's say Biden, who had no idea what the hell he was doing, number two, and Zelensky.
06:41He even accused Zelensky of prolonging the killing field by refusing to give up Crimea.
07:01After a massive Russian strike on Kyiv, Trump turned to social media and wrote,
07:08Vladimir, stop.
07:095,000 soldiers a week are dying.
07:12Let's get the peace deal done.
07:14But the violence continued.
07:23Facing questions about his stalled progress, Trump issued a new ultimatum.
07:28Do you believe the Russians are being disrespectful when they say that your criticisms of Putin are simply an emotional response?
07:37And do you still believe that Putin actually wants to end the war?
07:41I can't tell you that, but I'll let you know in about two weeks, within two weeks.
07:45We're going to find out very soon.
07:48We're going to find out whether or not he's tapping us along or not.
07:52And if he is, we'll respond a little bit differently.
07:55But it'll take about a week and a half, two weeks.
07:57We have Mr. Whitcoff is here who's doing a phenomenal job, is dealing with them very strongly right now.
08:05They seem to want to do something.
08:07But until the document is signed, I can't tell you.
08:11Nobody can.
08:12I can say this.
08:13I can say this, that I'm very disappointed at what happened a couple of nights now where people were killed in the middle of what you would call a negotiation.
08:24I'm very disappointed by that.
08:27But in those two weeks, Russia increased attacks on Ukraine, including some of the war's deadliest days.
08:34Trump then tried another tactic, a hard deadline and harsher threats.
08:46As you know, we've spent $350 billion approximately on this war with Russia and Ukraine.
08:55And we'd like to see it end.
08:56It wasn't my war.
08:57It was Biden's war.
08:58It's not my war.
09:00I'm trying to get you out of it.
09:01And we want to see it end.
09:04And I'm disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago.
09:10But it doesn't seem to get there.
09:12So based on that, we're going to be doing secondary tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days.
09:16It's very simple.
09:18And they'll be at 100%.
09:19And that's the way it is.
09:21It can be more simple.
09:23It's just the way it is.
09:24I hope we don't have to do it.
09:25He said if the war wasn't over in 50 days, the US would impose secondary sanctions, including 100% tariffs, targeting nations that buy Russian oil like China and India.
09:37But the markets barely flinched.
09:39The Russian stock market actually rose, anticipating no major fallout.
09:44Frustrated, Trump shortened the deadline from 50 days to just 10 to 12, warning Putin to show real progress or face tough sanctions.
10:02Standing alongside UK Prime Minister Keith Starmer in Scotland, Trump said,
10:06He set a new deadline, August 8th, promising consequences if Putin didn't act.
10:36Today, Trump's 10 to 12-day ultimatum expires.
10:45But rather than backing down or agreeing to a ceasefire, Putin is preparing to meet with Trump.
10:51The Kremlin confirmed the two will meet in the coming days, their first face-to-face talks since the war began.
10:57Six months in, Trump's 24-hour promise has become a running clock.
11:09He has suspended aid to Ukraine, clashed with both sides, issued multiple deadlines and threatened massive sanctions.
11:15But there is still no ceasefire.
11:18And the war, now in its fourth year, shows no sign of ending.
11:22With pressure growing at home and abroad, all eyes are now on Trump's upcoming meeting with Putin.
11:29Can he finally deliver the peace he promised?
11:32Or will this be just another missed deadline?
11:45Have a good run.
11:50It's been a
