Master Funny was laid to rest today following a service in song at the Grand Stand, Queen's Park Savannah - a fitting send-off for the master wordsmith and calypsonian. Rynessa Cutting has the highlights
00:00Way, master funny today, he gone along the road. Way, master funny today. Oh, way, uncle funny today.
00:16Tributes in song was the order of the day. At the final send-off for late Calypsoonian, Don Rick Williamson, better known as Master Funny,
00:25General Secretary of Tuco, Ms. Shilene Hendrickson, recalled the Calypso veteran's six-decade-long career.
00:33He was a steadfast supporter of Tuco for many, many, many, many years, offering us invaluable assistance, whether through creative dialogue or otherwise.
00:46He was a stickler for constructive humor. Somebody say constructive humor.
00:52And his contributions, inclusive of, sweet, sweet Trinidad. Oh, I love me country bad.
01:01And all you remember, a soul man. And how you feel, Trinbago? How you feel in 2025?
01:08Among his many accomplishments, being crowned the NACC's People's King in 1989 and being given the keys to the city of Port of Spain.
01:29Also being awarded the National Hummingbird Silver Medal in 2018, a fact Trinidad Rio sees as ironic, given the event preceding his passing.
01:41I asked funny, I said funny, what's the benefit, what's the purpose of having a national award or a national recipient?
01:53What does that do for you? I know what you do for it, but what does that do for you?
01:58Funny say, um, um, um, I said, all right, I don't want to put you in a spot.
02:06Two weeks ago, I got the answer.
02:11Funny, with all that contribution that Funny made, Funny spent two days in the hospital ward on a stretcher, waiting on a bed.
02:21However, many good memories were also shared, like the fact that Master Funny would never use obscenities.
02:28And always sought to uplift through song.
02:31Brother Williamson made a list of things that caused the damned to be condemned to hell.
02:37He listed ganja smoking.
02:39You see, the use of cannabis causes the wrongdoer to have an impaired judgment that triggered them to commit atrocious acts.
02:50The second thing was drinking liquor.
02:54Master Funny passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind his wife and daughter.
03:01Sweet, sweet Trinidad, oh, I love me country bad.
03:07When I death, please bury me in the center of the city.
