00:00On August 8, the Church celebrates Saint Dominic, one of the greatest preachers of all time.
00:06In a time of spiritual crisis, he responded not with power or force,
00:13but by word, poverty and prayer.
00:17Founder of the order of preaching friars, the Dominicans,
00:22he left an indelible mark on the history of the Church.
00:25Dominic was born around 1170 in Caleruega, Spain, into a noble and deeply Christian family.
00:36From a very young age, he showed a lively intelligence and deep piety.
00:41He studied liberal arts, then theology, and became a canon regular at Osma,
00:49where he leads an austere life turned towards God.
00:52But Dominique is not made for a quiet life.
00:56He accompanies his bishop on a diplomatic mission which takes him to Languedoc, in France,
01:04in the heart of a world undermined by the Cathar heresy.
01:07He is upset by the situation.
01:10The people are sincere, but misguided.
01:14Priests are often absent or corrupt, and the Gospel is no longer lived.
01:19Dominic understands that to evangelize, one must live what one preaches.
01:25He then began to announce the faith by begging, on foot, without money,
01:30preaching with gentleness, clarity and fervor.
01:34In 1215, Dominic founded the order of preaching friars, which were soon called Dominicans.
01:41Their motto? Truth, contemplation, preaching.
01:47These religious are neither cloistered monks nor parish priests.
01:52They are itinerant preachers, educated, poor,
01:57rooted in community prayer and study.
02:01Dominic wants to fight heresy not with force, but with the light of truth.
02:06To do this, we must train men capable of speaking to the heart and the intelligence.
02:13Study becomes a form of prayer, preaching an act of love.
02:20His order obtained the approval of Pope Honorius III in 1216.
02:26Communities quickly formed across Europe.
02:31Dominic sends his brothers two by two, like the apostles,
02:36to announce Christ in university towns, the countryside and even in royal courts.
02:45But Dominique is not just an intellectual.
02:49He is a man of intense prayer, of burning compassion.
02:53He spends entire nights praying for sinners, for the Church, for his brothers.
03:01He is often seen prostrate, in tears, begging God for the salvation of the world.
03:07He was not harsh or austere.
03:10His brothers said of him that he was always talking about God or to God.
03:14He had a great tenderness, a gentleness that disarmed even his adversaries.
03:19He encouraged, lifted up, taught, always in peace.
03:26According to popular tradition, it was to Dominic that the Virgin Mary entrusted the rosary.
03:33as a spiritual weapon against error and for the conversion of hearts.
03:39This Marian devotion will spread widely thanks to the Dominicans.
03:44Dominic died in 1221 in Bologna, at the age of 51.
03:51He is exhausted, but his work is growing.
03:56At his death, he left no possessions, manuscripts or monuments.
04:02He leaves men, inflamed by the Gospel,
04:06ready to proclaim Christ to the ends of the earth.
04:10His order will form great figures of holiness and thought.
04:15Saint Thomas Aquinas,
04:17Saint Catherine of Siena,
04:19Saint Vincent Ferrier,
04:21Blessed Fra Angelico.
04:24Dominicans will be present everywhere
04:26where the truth needs to be told,
04:29explained, defended.
04:33Saint Dominic is a model
04:34for all those who want to proclaim the Gospel
04:37with courage and gentleness.
04:39He teaches us that truth cannot be imposed by force,
04:44but proposes itself by example.
04:47On August 8,
04:48let us pray to him to give us his passion for God,
04:52his end of truth,
04:54his love of souls,
04:56that he may intercede for all preachers,
04:59teachers,
05:00the researchers
05:01and for all those who want,
05:04them too,
05:05walk in the light of faith.
05:09Official prayer of the Dominicans,
05:13used in the order of preachers.
