00:01On this August 17, the church honors Saint Hyacinth, Dominican priest, tireless missionary and apostle of the North.
00:11Today we also celebrate Saint Clare of Montefalco, Saint Mamesse of Adrianople and Saint Joan of Lanoue.
00:20Born around 1185 in Kamien-Chlonski, Poland, Hyacinthe came from a noble family.
00:30After studying in Krakow and then in Bologna, he met Saint Dominic, the founder of the order of preachers, in Rome.
00:40Touched by the fervor and evangelical life of his mendicant brothers, he received the Dominican habit and became one of the very first to spread the order outside Italy.
00:52Back in Poland, he founded the first Dominican convent in Krakow.
00:57But his zeal does not stop there.
01:01He traveled tirelessly through Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Sweden and even China, according to some traditions, announcing the gospel to the Slavic and Nordic people.
01:14He is nicknamed the apostle of the North for the magnitude of his mission.
01:18Tradition relates a striking episode.
01:22During a Mongol invasion of kyiv, Hyacinth saved the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of the Virgin, miraculously carrying them, although they were very heavy, to safety.
01:36This image of the courageous and faithful missionary has remained engraved in the memory of the faithful.
01:44Hyacinth died in Krakow on August 15, 1257, the feast of the Assumption.
01:51He was canonized in 1594 by Pope Clement VIII.
01:58Even today, he is venerated in Poland and throughout Eastern Europe as the patron saint of missionaries and protector in times of hardship.
