00:00Today, this October, we celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary,
00:06Marian memory deeply rooted in Christian prayer and in the history of the Church.
00:13This day reminds us of the spiritual and military victory of Épente in 1571,
00:20when Christianity was saved through the prayer of the Rosary.
00:24In the 16th century, the Christian world was threatened by the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.
00:31Pope Pius V, a devout Dominican of the Virgin Mary,
00:35calls on all the faithful to recite the Rosary to implore help from heaven.
00:40On October 7, 1571, while the Christian forces confronted the Turkish fleet off the coast of the Epente,
00:48countless rosaries are recited throughout Europe.
00:52The battle ended in a miraculous victory for the Christians.
00:56which the Pope attributes to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
01:00In recognition, he established this feast under the name of Our Lady of Victory,
01:06soon renamed Our Lady of the Rosary.
01:09But beyond this historical event, this celebration is above all a call to pray the Rosary,
01:17this prayer so simple and so powerful which meditates on the great mysteries of the life of Christ through the eyes of his mother.
01:24The Rosary was born in the heart of the Dominican family, around Saint Dominic,
01:41to whom tradition attributes its diffusion in the 13th century.
01:44Mary is said to have said to Dominic: “Preach my Rosary to convert the world.”
01:51Since then, this prayer has accompanied the centuries, the saints, the families,
01:57the people in their struggles, their hopes, their conversions.
02:01To recite the Rosary is to enter into the heart of Mary to contemplate the face of Christ.
02:08It is a prayer that is both meditative and embodied.
02:13Lips recite, fingers play,
02:17the mind contemplates,
02:19the heart opens.
02:21Saint John Paul II said “The Rosary,
02:24although he has a Marian appearance,
02:26is basically a prayer from the heart of Christ."
02:31In our lives today, often rushed and scattered,
02:33the Rosary can once again become a haven of peace.
02:37He asks neither place nor condition,
02:39only one heart available.
02:42You can pray to him on a bus,
02:44while walking,
02:45before sleeping.
02:47It is a dialogue of love that unites us to Mary
02:50and through her to his Son.
02:53The October 7th celebration invites us
02:55to rediscover this prayer as a spiritual weapon,
02:59not against human enemies,
03:01but against evil, fear,
03:03sadness, indifference.
03:07Mary, Queen of the Rosary,
03:09teaches us to look at the world with hope,
03:13to entrust our families, our joys,
03:15our trials to the tenderness of God.
03:18Even today,
03:20in sanctuaries around the world,
03:22the rosaries swing
03:23between the fingers of the pilgrims.
03:26Each grain carries an intention,
03:28a thank you, a suffering.
03:31And Mary, sweet mother,
03:32receives his prayers
03:33like so many flowers placed at his feet.
03:37May this celebration be the occasion
03:38to pick up a forgotten rosary,
03:41to rediscover peace
03:42what this loving repetition gives
03:44and unite our voice
03:45to that of the whole Church.
