NSW government announces crackdown on creation and sharing of explicit deepfake images

The state government has announced a crackdown on the creation and sharing of explicit deepfake images. It follows an explosion in the number of fake nudity images of young people.

00:00Emma Mason remembers the moment that upended everything.

00:05A fake nude image of her then 14-year-old daughter Tilly was circulated on social media.

00:11A year later, after the cyberbullying worsened, Tilly took her own life.

00:16For Tilly it was catastrophic.

00:18She just went from having one person contact her to hundreds of people contact her.

00:22The state government will now introduce tougher laws

00:25targeting the rise of sexually explicit deepfakes.

00:29Deepfake and image-based abuse is a form of sexual abuse.

00:34We are introducing this legislation to hold perpetrators to account.

00:38The laws would make the creation and sharing of such images a criminal offence,

00:42punishable by up to three years in prison.

00:45Similar laws are already in place in Victoria.

00:48We've got to address attitudes, but the laws, you know, for a change,

00:51the law needs to keep up with us instead of us having these conversations

00:55in five or ten years' time about how we failed.

00:57Data from the eSafety Commissioner shows that between 2019 and 2023,

01:03the number of explicit deepfake videos online increased by 550%.

01:08And in the last 18 months alone, reports of deepfakes

01:13and other digitally altered sexual images of young Australians

01:16has more than doubled when compared with the previous seven years combined.

01:21Four out of five of these reports targeted females.

01:24With the growth of artificial intelligence apps,

01:27it's becoming easier for people to create deepfake images.

01:31And the tough stance on punishing offenders in New South Wales

01:34has support from both sides of politics.

01:37This is a sinister practice by cowards behind laptops,

01:43behind desktop computers, on their iPhones, on their iPads,

01:46ruining people's lives.

01:48Closing another loophole in fighting the scourge of sexual abuse.
