Zohran Mamdani, the New York City Democratic nominee for mayor is lashing out at former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump after the New York Times reported that Cuomo and Trump had phone conversations about Trump getting involved in the race.

00:00Tell me what democracy looks like.
00:02This is what democracy looks like.
00:05We are standing in front of Federal Plaza,
00:08the very site where New Yorkers are being stolen,
00:12whether from their families, their friends,
00:15or from the city that they call home.
00:18It is at this very site that we understand the cost of this news
00:23that former Governor Cuomo has been conspiring with President Trump.
00:29About the fate of this city, about the future of this city,
00:32about the facts of this race.
00:35It is knowledge that is a betrayal of everything that we stand for as New Yorkers.
00:41We know that this former Governor has very little regard,
00:46whether it be for the Democratic Party, the Democratic process,
00:51or for Democrats themselves,
00:53because he would rather look past having been beaten
00:56by close to 13 points,
00:59by a campaign that amassed more votes
01:02than any Democratic primary winner in New York City history,
01:05to the extent that he would actually have a conversation
01:08with the very President,
01:11who is stealing food from the hungry,
01:14who is throwing New Yorkers and Americans
01:17from coast to coast off of their health care,
01:19and doing so all in service
01:21of yet another significant wealth transfer
01:24between those who do not have enough in their pocket
01:27to those who have more than they know what to do with.
01:29It is time for us to say enough.
01:32It is time for us to make clear
01:34that what this city deserves is a mayor
01:37who, when he sees Donald Trump attacking the people of this city,
01:42will stand up and fight back against that vision,
01:45will not get on the phone with the architect of that vision
01:49to speak about a race that we already know
01:52should be a referendum
01:53on how to make the most expensive city
01:56in the United States of America affordable,
01:58not a question of how we can install yet another ambassador
02:01for Washington, D.C. in City Hall.
02:03The job of mayor is not to audition
02:07to be the jester for a want-to-be king.
02:11It is to be the person that stands up
02:13for the values of this city,
02:15for the fabric of this city,
02:17and for the people of this city.
02:19And that is what I am running to do.
02:21I believe the New York Times
02:23over President Trump and Andrew Cuomo.
02:25And we've seen, as of this morning,
02:28that they stand by their reporting.
02:31I've appreciated the conversations
02:34that I've had, fruitful and productive ones,
02:37with Leader Jeffries,
02:38with Senator Schumer,
02:40with Governor Hochul.
02:42And I look forward to the partnership
02:43that we will continue to build
02:45for the benefit of people across this city
02:46and across this state.
