00:00My name is Mike Rowe, and this is my job.
00:05I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:09We're going to have to make a puke.
00:11Oh, shut up.
00:12No!
00:13Hard-working men and women who earn an honest living
00:15doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:22Now get ready to get dirty.
00:26Coming up on Dirty Jobs...
00:30Ow, ow, ow.
00:31This hurts everywhere.
00:33...in a faraway realm called Windsorland.
00:35We break them down, we move them to the dump.
00:37That's their final destination.
00:39A day at work means doing the twist.
00:41Like an acrobat.
00:41Another house acrobat.
00:43Ooh, what happened?
00:44And popping in a shoulder or two.
00:46Oh!
00:47What is this job doing to you, man?
00:48You're jacked up, curled up like a pretzel, and your joints are flying out of whack.
00:51And in this not-so-magic kingdom...
00:53A broken home is a good thing.
00:57A house divided cannot stand.
01:00And later...
01:01What are you thinking about?
01:02I thought I knew how to pick up women.
01:04But in this strange place, a good raft gets you nowhere.
01:07Oh, yeah.
01:08These females put up a tough exterior, but inside, they're soft.
01:11She's still attractive, even cut in half and face down.
01:14I find that a hands-on approach works best, and a dirty mind.
01:17They try to capture the quality of that pose that she's in.
01:20Around the breasts, around the waist.
01:21Yeah, I just, you know, I mean, I feel like we've just met, man.
01:25We've got to cover every square inch of this thing.
01:31Oh, God.
01:34Oh!
01:34Oh!

02:00mobile home park at least it used to be as you can see most of the mobile homes
02:05are off being mobile those that remain are about to go on their last trip so
02:12that's Eric and he's dragging a tree and this is Sam Borden and he runs a company
02:16called what Sam Borden's mobile home service put your name in the title yeah
02:21smart fellow we are at Windsor land yep and it's true that this is the home
02:28that we're gonna get out of here yes and that is that is your job in a nutshell
02:32yep we break them down we move them to the dump and that's where they crush them
02:36and that's their final destination all right so this one for instance how long
02:40has it been here do you know probably 30 years 30 yes okay so we're to the point
02:45now where we just have to throw it on an axle and move it throw it on an axle and
02:48get it out of here would it be possible to get a look at the inside see see
02:53what's what if you can handle it oh I can handle it Sam I can handle it where
02:59where do we enter uh we're here between the picket fences oh the white picket
03:03fence is a lovely touch it's green oh I gotta say when I glanced at this my
03:08first thought this Norman Rockwell I mean he's oh but yeah they let it go a
03:14little didn't they yeah they let it go a little bit how typical is this uh pretty
03:20typical believe it or not let's have a look inside did they move I'm not sure
03:30did they just leave this is how they lived but they took a lot of their garbage
03:37tell me it's plastic I hope so do you do you worry with cleaning any of this or is
03:44this all just gonna be hauled we will clean out like probably the drawers and
03:49stuff like that in this room and then appliances and things to that nature
03:55scared the hell out of me there's a giant rat in the ceiling
03:59all right this is this be the the bed bedroom area back here kitchen
04:05but again I mean is there anything to to deal with dude that this this all has to
04:11be taken out it all has to be taken out what was going on in here well they
04:15shredded all their evidence whatever it was
04:19are you kidding me
04:23oh Sam this is does it surprise you anymore the conditions and it actually
04:34doesn't just a heck of a joint what the hell is this
04:40this is this is a love swing it's a love swinging I guess that's where they had it
04:46mounted at as a harness it just hangs from the ceiling for the purposes of
04:51conjugal yeah I've never seen one but I guess there's a first for everything
04:55explains this thing the heck is that right now I'm a suspicious of everything I mean
05:03it's one minute it looked like just some harmless attachment but now they're
05:06there next to the love swing with the groucho nose next to it God knows what
05:11went on in this place yeah oh yeah that's the best drug paraphernalia
05:17drug paraphernalia well this clearly was the room where it was all coming
05:20together this is the main room the room for swinging smoking breaking all sorts
05:25of laws explains all the shredding explains all the shredding this is the
05:30crew Eric how are you Travis and Bill good to meet you guys kitchen first
05:38so you're just looking for bulk yeah big real heavy stuff yeah later another
05:45company will help clean up the light trash there were originally 130 homes here
05:51this is a dud but having troubles with my drawers for years eventually it'll be
06:01stores and condos barber's chair yeah really does make you wonder what the
06:07heck went on in this mobile home if it could go on it probably went on you see
06:10what's going on in this place tragedy this job is we got here too late brownie
06:16there's no booze there's no love fairly certain I've seen this somewhere no what
06:24happened my shoulder came out your shoulder came out dislocated you all right
06:30yeah how often does that happen about two or three times a week you sure you're in
06:36the right line of work Travis why don't you focus on like the CDs and the you know
06:40fashion items yeah you here you don't lift anything heavier than bubble pack
06:46I work through it inside done now what underneath up top we'll start with the
06:54underneath it looks like we have a four axle home are you saying we crawl over to
07:02that thing and attach a what do you put on it two guys bolt the axles up in the middle hangers and
07:10two guys bolt the axles up on the outside hangers what's holding this thing up right now those middle
07:14piers and there are how many of those probably about 50 so these would be the axles these are the axles
07:23and we'll just set them right back here and we'll just set the first one about right all right here
07:32just right over to the side that'll work all right now this is where you and Trav will uh go underneath
07:39of the home and drag this axle underneath of the home all right so Trav yeah you got to really spell
07:44stuff out for me because it look it appears as though we're just going to be crawling across rocks
07:48uh that's pretty much it we just got it however you can get on there should we be taking something
07:56with us uh we kind of have them you get about halfway and have them shovel come on man is this
08:02I mean we're just crawling across razor sharp rocks here yeah that's what we do all day
08:07hey man which one's your bad shoulder uh the one usually I lay on
08:19rocks ain't foot
08:24this right there is about good because
08:29I've been caught between a rock and a hard place before but not rocks that are this sharp
08:41man I hate to complain this hurts everywhere coming up see wherever you see that line go
08:49we're gonna have to take it off
08:51young homewreckers causing a big split how much do we do Trav
08:58soon as boss says stop and later is a mannequin with a head or is a mannequin without a head
09:04I'm all for a head these flawless females can't say no or anything else for that matter we're
09:09opening a woman right right down the middle and she's not complaining that's a first
09:12all right now what was with this climb on in where it's a little more space oh yeah I
09:25scarcely know what to do with all this extra room if you want grab one of those shackle things the
09:32metal yeah now just so you know when you're gonna start sentences with words like if you want oh the
09:38answer's probably gonna be no I'd rather you want to grab that uh grab that uh
09:43yeah okay all right all right all right what we're gonna do is bolt this here just
10:05well this has to be done right because this is basically gonna hold your whole this is
10:14holding the whole house as we go down the highway right that's good you just want them
10:20loose for right now all right all right now we can start bolting on the axles go ahead and pull it
10:26yeah the best way I did is put my knee under here how about my foot yeah that'll work
10:31yeah I got it oh what happened my shoulder no your shoulders out yeah no what can I do
10:41just watch them put it in watch me put it what are you don't oh are you kidding me
10:50I'm not joking with you there it was
10:52whoo you all right I'm fine I did it so many it just kind of
11:00what is this job doing to you man you're underneath the mobile home you're jacked up curled up like a
11:05pretzel and your joints are flying out of whack I guess I love it I don't know how else to say it
11:11I just do it I got a couple theories I'll run by you later yeah
11:15we're gonna bring the other two axles to you guys and we're gonna slide them through the back
11:39great yeah so we'll just stay under here
11:40if you want you can take out that concrete why isn't anything right where I am because
11:47that's usually how it happens it's like an acrobat another house acrobat
11:54dude how did you learn how to do this I mean this can't be in a manual
12:00you learn tricks as you go I guess
12:02yeah there she is nice now we tighten them
12:12tough job man tough dudes all right I think that's it we can go ahead and crawl out now
12:23let me tell you something that guy keep him
12:43Travis you're done
12:47when's the last time you went on one of those
12:49about 10 years ago good to be the king
12:53well Eric it looks like work in question now is not happening under the house
13:03yep that's good what is this called that's the mod line
13:08mod the mod line yeah that's what separates the houses
13:11pretty much you gotta take all the trim off the top of the roof all the way down the whole house
13:17where it splits and then we'll pull this carpet back cut all our nails and our floor
13:22so I mean when you haul this down the road then
13:25you're hauling two separate pieces two separate pieces of course this would never fit
13:30obviously all right yeah what can I do
13:33there's your hammer and basically we just start taking this trim off right here
13:38uh-huh all down the whole length of the house
13:41see wherever you see that line go we're gonna have to take it off
13:47okay we're good on that so now we gotta expose the floor and then we'll come back and we'll run a saw
13:59saw this all down the whole floor cut all the nails in the floor
14:01what's that smell try that bathroom right there yeah there's something going on under the carpet
14:12when this home was built they only required nails in the roof and the floor
14:27not the sides of the home so these are not your average small nails
14:32okay all right we're good so now everything on the walls and the floors separated up on the roof
14:49it's rough coming up well it's good fun on the back isn't it a new twist on raising the roof
14:56that's one way to do it then this lifts the mobile home up and down what goes up must come down
15:07sometimes when you least expect oh and later holy smoke she's nearly naked I'm gonna touch Deanna
15:14while she's looking at me that could be awkward getting down and dirty with a model citizen you
15:18can't really finesse it at this stage can you
15:20like a day at the beach
15:36like a day at the beach
15:38so what you gotta be doing
15:44we're gonna expose the mod line first
15:46right okay like we did on the inside of the house
15:49right and after we expose the mod line then we're gonna cut around the whole perimeter
15:55of the roof and fold it back well how long does this process normally take 30 45 minutes with us
16:03here probably about two three hours there you go thanks Bill about 30 minutes Bill relax buddy
16:08all right I just start on one side go all the way down right then fold it back and then sometimes I
16:13have to cut the other side sometimes you know not you cut it the whole way or yeah you just
16:18run right down the solo okay and it's pretty thin stuff so you really don't got to bury the
16:24just angle it not like before
16:30it seems like these guys don't do anything standing up straight and the heat from the sun reflected off
16:38this roof is almost unbearable it really pays to be fast up here and Bill is perfect for the job
16:45he's the fastest worker and maybe the fastest talker I've ever met
16:49well that's good fun on the back isn't it
16:51you can go across about every 10 feet like this so you can pull it back every 10 feet pull back yeah
16:55no I kind of cut it across there across like this
16:57something tells me this isn't going to be quite as simple as down below now this stuff I'm sure you can see is very very sharp yeah razor
17:15it's probably sharper than a razor something like that were to just slide across your face breeze catches it the wrong way
17:22I just make sure when I grab it I grab a good grip on it where it don't slide
17:26hold it good tight so it don't slide if it slides it cuts you
17:29you've been cut once or twice I guess a couple times
17:32the van has no fear and no gloves
17:36removing the aluminum roof cap exposes the area where the two halves of the home are joined
17:45they've got lag bolts and they've got carriage bolts
17:48they're all rusted so the best way to get them off is just cut them
17:53start right here with the saw going
17:56Bill you do the hammering and split that as best as you can while he's cutting
18:01well that's already split enough and he'll be alright
18:03yeah I know but when it gets tight fantastic
18:08Bill's splitting the wood so the saw blade doesn't bind
18:14most of the time they have nails or bolts they don't have bolts up usually
18:19they're usually only like bolts bolts or nails
18:22this is the double they did this extra
18:25got it
18:26you don't have to have a sharp blade to do the other part
18:28what?
18:29you don't have to have a sharp blade to do the other stuff
18:30hey Bill come here
18:31yeah
18:32how long you been doing this man?
18:34oh about five years
18:35yeah?
18:36it doesn't get any easier either
18:37you having any fun at all?
18:38uh not really
18:39yeah
18:40not this part of the day
18:41yeah yeah
18:42fun in the morning was still cool
18:43you're sweating a little
18:44yeah it's hard to do that
18:45okay
18:46lots of water
18:47yeah
18:48do we have any water up here?
18:49uh no but we need to find some
18:50okay yeah we should get some
18:51yeah
18:52yeah
18:53so Bill
18:58you normally do this by yourself?
19:01yeah
19:02how long does it take you to do this alone?
19:04probably about an hour and a half
19:05i've done it like a half hour sometimes
19:07yeah
19:08they put extra nails and bolts in this one
19:10usually they're like
19:11bolts every
19:1230 inches or something
19:13but this guy got nails
19:14five nails in between each bolt
19:15that's extra
19:16probably extra
19:17that makes it like impossible
19:19yeah
19:20to go yeah you just keep changing blades
19:21because it wears your blades out
19:22those nails are pretty
19:23tough nails
19:24I noticed that yeah
19:26it's almost as though they're made of
19:27iron or steel or something
19:29yep
19:30alright
19:31are we done that part?
19:32uh yeah we just gotta go
19:33another foot on a foot
19:34to finish off the end
19:35each end
19:36gotta go the rest of the way out
19:37completely spit
19:52there you go
19:53alright
19:54marriage line is complete
19:55great
19:58the next part is optional
19:59let's go
20:00the next part is optional
20:01cause uh
20:02if it's optional let's not do it
20:04I take the rest of the roof off to recycle it
20:06cause that's a couple hundred dollars
20:07with aluminum right here
20:08oh yeah
20:09that's extra money for myself
20:10but I usually wait until
20:11after I'm done
20:12after the day's over
20:13and I come back and do it after everybody's done
20:14you know after we're done
20:15you wanna do that?
20:16might as well do it
20:17well for a couple hundred bucks
20:18I guess it's worth it
20:19yeah for me
20:29it's hot
20:36can't get any cleaner aluminum than that
20:37but you know
20:38nothing on it except for
20:39aluminum
20:40you said it
20:45that's one way to do it
20:47that's what we talk about
20:49we put brown
20:50before green
20:52Bill comes up here
20:53he gets his money for taking off the roof
20:55then his boss
20:56lets him do a little recycling
20:58it's not easy
20:59but hey man
21:00a few hundred bucks
21:01a few hundred bucks
21:02right?
21:03that's a job
21:13alright thanks
21:14appreciate the help
21:15oh my pleasure
21:16and by pleasure I mean agony
21:18not quite done yet
21:19I think I got all the styrofoam off the roof too
21:20you don't recycle the styrofoam do you?
21:21we just throw that off right to the side
21:23it's a game called
21:24hit Troy with the styrofoam
21:25who wants to play?
21:30the styrofoam is insulation
21:31once it's off
21:32maybe we can get out of the sun
21:39oh got him
21:40there you go
21:41he's almost lifted a set up right here
21:44oh
21:45oh
21:46I scored him
21:47sorry about that
21:48oh
21:49oh a down goes Troy
21:50oh no
21:51oh man
21:52we got a bingo
21:53I didn't do that
21:54did I do that?
21:55oh beautiful
21:56you alright?
21:57oh he's fine
21:58he fell in a pudge
22:00coming out
22:01alright
22:02that tire thing
22:03that's gonna be a hassle
22:04no
22:05really?
22:06no
22:07easy
22:08piece of cake
22:09when you're going all the way
22:10even on the road to nowhere
22:11you have to put on some rubber
22:12is this fun or what?
22:13and later
22:14doing dirty girl
22:15dirty on the inside
22:16you know the kind
22:17the pressure to put out
22:19and how many mannequins do you turn out
22:2130,000 mannequins a year
22:22can sometimes cause
22:23uh oh
22:24performance issues
22:25honestly honey
22:26this almost never happens
22:33this lifts the mobile home up and down
22:36side to side
22:37in and out
22:39near the back of the home
22:41Travis and Eric
22:42have set up jacks
22:43on metal tracks
22:44that will enable
22:45half of the house
22:46to be raised and separated
22:48Sam will control the front movement
22:50with the tow truck
22:51ready whenever you guys want
22:56alright
22:57come over there
22:58this mobile home
22:59weighs 21,000 pounds
23:01and it is mobile
23:02a little unnerving

23:04underneath it
23:08we're good
23:09ok
23:10good?
23:11yup
23:12now we're gonna pull all of our
23:13material out
23:14with all the foundation stands
23:16removed
23:17the total weight of this half
23:18of the house
23:19is resting on the jacks
23:20and the tow hitch
23:21alright
23:22here we go
23:26nice and easy
23:27how much do we do
23:39Trev?

23:48let's get our tires on
23:49alright
23:50that tire thing
23:51that's gonna be a hassle
23:52no
23:53really?
23:54no easy
23:553 minutes of tire
23:56pardon me
23:57pardon me
23:58but I've got to help put a tire

24:014 over there
24:02alright
24:05so
24:06move
24:07here you go
24:10it takes these guys two days to finish a double wide
24:20whoa
24:21at the landfill
24:22they recycle as much of the material as possible
24:25and who knows
24:26maybe in one form or another
24:28some of this home
24:29will end up in a shopping center near you
24:31keep your eyes peeled for that love swing
24:38big Sam
24:40you certainly know how to show a fella a good time
24:43been an honor
24:45see you around
24:46we'll see you around
24:47in the meantime it's official
24:49a house divided
24:50cannot stand
24:52but I'm fairly certain
24:54that it can roll
24:56is this fun or what?
25:03when I was 13 years old
25:16I fell in love with a mannequin
25:18weird I know but it's absolutely true
25:21I called her Heather
25:22and this one looks a little bit like her
25:24every day after school I'd walk past the window
25:26in that department store
25:27in downtown Baltimore
25:28and I'd stare at Heather
25:30and Heather would stare back at me
25:31and I loved everything about her
25:33I loved the way she dressed
25:34I loved the way she carried herself
25:36I loved the way she
25:37she looked at me
25:39ultimately though
25:40the relationship was doomed
25:41she was older
25:42hung with another crowd
25:44plastic
25:45since then
25:46I've moved on
25:47and I now
25:48I've learned to appreciate the company of
25:50actual women
25:51but the truth is
25:52I never really
25:53got over
25:54Heather
25:55it's a funny thing
25:56so today
25:5730 some years later
25:58I've come to the city of industry
25:59to Patina V
26:01to investigate and learn everything I can
26:03about the mysteries
26:04and the makings of mannequins
26:06what makes them tick
26:07why don't some of them have heads?
26:09who knows
26:10by the end of the day
26:11if I'm lucky
26:12maybe we'll
26:13recapture some of the magic
26:15days gone by
26:16how you doing?
26:18I don't know that she has a name
26:21but I think we could call her a rose
26:22between two thorns at this point
26:24this is Norm Glazier
26:25and Norm you run
26:26uh...
26:27Patina V?
26:28I'm not sure whether I run it
26:29or whether the company runs me
26:30but yes
26:31and how many mannequins
26:32do you turn out
26:33in a given year say?
26:34we can say
26:35we turn out
26:36maybe 30,000 mannequins a year
26:38but what is your definition
26:39of a mannequin?
26:40is a mannequin with a head?
26:42or is a mannequin without a head?
26:44I'm all for a head
26:45holy smokes
27:01she's nearly naked
27:03you must be George
27:04hi
27:05Mike
27:06how are you?
27:07I'm great how are you?
27:08Mike
27:09nice to meet you
27:11hi Mike
27:12nice to meet you
27:13you're Justin?
27:14nice to meet you
27:15wow you have absolutely
27:17except for the face
27:18captured her likeness
27:19how long uh...
27:21how long have you been standing like this?
27:23uh... I get breaks
27:24on and off
27:25but my longest day is probably seven hours here
27:28must be very tiring after a while
27:30I'm sore by the end of the day
27:31yeah?
27:32I feel that way all the time
27:33what about you Justin?
27:34how long has it taken to get
27:36to the point where you are right now?
27:38it takes 40 to 50 hours
27:40did you get into this part of the business on purpose?
27:43or did it just sort of happen?
27:45I always loved classical sculpture
27:46so I studied it
27:47and uh...
27:48one thing led to another
27:49and I ended up here
27:50how close is this to being finished?
27:52it's within minutes
27:53minutes?
27:54yeah you're gonna finish it by the way
27:56so get ready
27:57yeah
27:58I'm gonna touch Deanna
27:59yeah
28:00while she's looking at me
28:01that could be awkward
28:02but I'll do it
28:03take this bristle broom
28:05drag that over the form
28:06very firmly
28:07right
28:08trying to break down any tool marks
28:10you see
28:11see they're very subtle
28:12right
28:13but they're there
28:14and we've gotta get rid of them
28:15can you feel it?
28:16oh yeah
28:17it's as if you're pulling the shape together
28:18and you're kind of making
28:19you're pulling that skin over the form
28:22making it fluid
28:24okay
28:25so now what you do is
28:27you're taking the paint brush
28:28and you want to criss-cross
28:29over the bristle marks
28:31just trying to smooth them down
28:32and get rid of them
28:33you're using a
28:34kind of a
28:35what they call slip
28:36it's a mixture of clay and water
28:37so it's like mud
28:38and what you're doing is
28:39you're taking out the
28:41scratches from the broom
28:43that you've been using
28:44and that's pretty much the last phase
28:46then it goes into the mold shop
28:48how do you start?
28:49I mean what's the first thing you do
28:51when she walks in here for the first time
28:53and it's just the armature?
28:54okay
28:57so basically you start out by filling in
29:00the areas that seem to need it most
29:07there you go
29:08yeah you got it
29:09look at that
29:10you're a natural
29:12empathize with the model
29:13you know
29:14and uh
29:15look at her
29:16and try to capture the quality
29:17of that walking pose that she's in
29:20yeah
29:21I'm capturing something right here Deanna
29:23pardon me but just
29:24I'm trying to
29:27you don't have to get too involved in any one part at this point
29:30trying to see the whole thing start to emerge
29:33and it's very hard at this stage but after a little while
29:36it won't take long for it to start taking shape coming together
29:40you have an intuitive touch for this stuff you seem to be doing it without any instruction
29:53well I do have a natural inclination for mud and clay and such
29:57the problem here is that we can't keep this
30:00it's too fragile it won't hold up the only thing you can do is take a positive make a mold of it and then from the mold you make a fiberglass casting which is rigid which is durable and which you can work with this is too fragile unfortunately it has to be thrown away we take pictures and that's it
30:16you're not like the others you don't play those same crazy mind games in the end you went out on a limb and don't think I'll ever forget that
30:33coming up his job is hands he does hand jobs all day
30:36up when you got too much time
30:38it hardens up all right I didn't pull it out fast enough
30:40a lot of tugging leads to a happy ending
30:43there you go bueno good I gotta hand it to you Jaime
30:53so here comes our uh our dancer and uh this is Kuko by the way how are you
30:58fine thank you how are you I'm great how long you been working for this guy
31:01oh like uh I don't know more than 25 years
31:05you know what after 25 you stop counting
31:09um so this is our dancer series that we just saw encased in fiberglass
31:14that is correct
31:16underneath here is a is a clay model
31:20what we have to do now is open this up and from that point on we can go you want to open it up
31:26I'd love to open it up man we're literally opening up
31:28we're opening a woman right right down the middle
31:31exactly and she's not complaining
31:34that's a first
31:37Norm tells me that the heads for the mannequin bodies are produced separately
31:41any head could be attached to any type of mannequin body
31:45possibilities are endless this flexibility allows patina V to better fulfill customer demands
31:51so in the end what's a what's a mannequin cost what will this one cost
31:56the air conditioning power steering and power brakes it'll run some ways in the neighborhood of 700 to 900 dollars a piece
32:02so less than a thousand bucks fully equipped
32:05fully equipped
32:07oh yeah
32:08there we go
32:09there we go
32:11oh
32:13now if you notice the clay the clay is totally ruined now
32:16yeah
32:17but we don't need the clay because the shell that you've taken off is what we now call a waste mold
32:22right
32:23now what has to be done is that has to be sanded cleaned and then the actual fittings are positioned in there
32:30and once that is done
32:33then we do a production mold a casting from this
32:36uh-huh
32:38Cuco tells me that a female mannequin uses about 200 to 250 pounds of clay
32:44because clay is much denser than flesh
32:47a male mannequin requires about 300 pounds of clay
32:50she's still attractive even cut in half and face down
32:53yeah
32:56okay from this point
32:57uh-huh
32:58we just leave it like as it is and we take it to the washer
33:03once these waste molds are used to cast permanent molds true to their name they get thrown away
33:13uh-oh
33:19honestly honey this almost never happens
33:23I lost my pressure
33:29oh there we go
33:30back in business
33:37doing dirty girl
33:39filthy dirty on the inside
33:41you know the kind
33:46the waste mold is used to cast a prototype
33:49the prototype is assembled and any imperfections are removed
33:54then a final mold is made from the prototype
33:59and mannequin production begins
34:01patina V makes its molds with plaster from the hemp fiber
34:05which is an environmentally friendly material
34:07Pontius say hello to Mike
34:08how are you
34:10how are you Mike?
34:12Pontius is in charge of his entire factory
34:14oh great
34:15aside from all the workers reporting to him
34:17he's an expert mold maker and he's also an expert man on rotocast production
34:19the material we're using is urethane
34:22not polyurethane
34:24no urethane
34:25And it is environmentally correct
34:28because it's not letting any VOCs into the atmosphere.
34:32It's a cleanup process.
34:33And quite frankly, we make a better product.
34:36Here's where technology has helped us over the years.
34:39These are the shoulder fittings he's putting in.
34:42So that goes on the outside like so.
34:46He's basically just screwing those in, right?
34:48This is the real deal with real molds,
34:50not the waste molds, so precision counts.
34:53The rotocasting machine keeps the molds turning 360 degrees
34:57to ensure that the liquid urethane spreads evenly throughout.
35:01Ready? Good? Yep.
35:03It takes about 10 minutes,
35:04and the result should be a perfect
35:06and lightweight hollow body cast.
35:08First though, we've got to get the urethane inside the mold.
35:11Did I break it? Yeah.
35:13Like many things that seem straight forward and simple,
35:16it isn't.
35:17I barely touched it.
35:18Excuse me.
35:19Let me, yes, can I do that?
35:23What'd I do wrong?
35:26I didn't make it tighter.
35:27No, you just have to, when you start, just press a little bit.
35:32And let it go?
35:32Let it go.
35:33Oh.
35:36Close.
35:3810 minutes and a few hundred rotations.
35:40Later, it's time to see my body of work.
35:43Mine's got some zits on her back.
35:46Yeah, that one is, that one has a lot of material.
35:49Yeah.
35:51See, this is all smooth, and mine's got it.
35:53Well, it's only because these are air bubbles,
35:56and you might not have held it long enough when you put it in.
35:59Yeah.
36:00But it's a good first try.
36:02You're very kind.
36:04Coming up.
36:05What good is a mannequin or what good is a woman unless she has a makeup on?
36:09Really?
36:10Did you just say that?
36:11Taking a shot at giving a facial.
36:13See, this is just a great mystery to me.
36:15I mean, I don't even know how to touch her.
36:16I'm holding her by her throat.
36:17The whole thing feels wrong.
36:18And blowing it.
36:19Will you ever forget her?
36:20Oh, no.
36:21The newly minted cast sits for 24 to 48 hours, which allows any residual oil or gas trapped
36:36inside the mannequin to dissipate.
36:39Then it's sanded.
36:43While the paint department finishes the torsos, hands for the mannequins are produced in another
36:48area, using a slightly different production process.
36:53So then, I guess the first thing you do when you're making hands is make sure you protect
36:57your hands.
36:58This is all hot stuff.
37:00All hot stuff.
37:01You're Jaime?
37:02Yeah, I'm Jaime.
37:03Oh, me too, me too.
37:04Nice to meet you.
37:05So is Jaime the official hand guy here?
37:08He's in charge of this department.
37:10His job is hands.
37:11Exactly.
37:12He does hand jobs all day.
37:13He does hand jobs all day.
37:15Alrighty.
37:16Now this is liquid?
37:18That is polyvinyl chloride.
37:19Right.
37:20And that's PVC.
37:22PVC, exactly.
37:23So you're going to pour it.
37:25Whoops.
37:26That's it.
37:27Just like you're pouring to make pancakes.
37:29Pink pancakes.
37:30Jamie says that making a set of hands takes about five to six minutes when you know what
37:35you're doing.
37:40It involves cooking the liquid PVC in boiling water.
37:44Let it set.
37:45Put it in.
37:46Put it in.
37:47So what's happening in their norm now chemically?
37:50It's just heating?
37:51What you're doing is allowing the material to adhere to the inside of the mold.
37:57Now, you're going to pour out most of the material as long as the coating holds to the mold itself.
38:04Straight in just like this.
38:05Hands are quickly immersed in hot water again.
38:06Up, up, up, up.
38:07Now you're going to pull the hand.
38:08Reheating the hands makes them flexible, so they're easier to pull out of the molds.
38:25At least, that's the way things go when things are done correctly.
38:29When you've got too much time...
38:31It hardens up.
38:32Yeah.
38:33So you're going to pull it out.
38:34You pull it out.
38:35Get it in there.
38:36More hot?
38:37Yeah.
38:38All right.
38:39I didn't pull it out fast enough, so he's going to heat it up.
38:40The whole thing is very much of a, like, the clock's always ticking.
38:43Exactly.
38:44You've got to move, move, move.
38:45That's why they're working against the clock and they're doing production while something
38:48is getting heated.
38:49That's why a guy like me is so frustrating to have around.
38:52The hands are made from the same PVC material as a typical plumbing pipe.
38:59So, even though they look delicate, they're actually pretty tough, which in this case is
39:04a good thing.
39:05Here you come.
39:06There you go.
39:07Bueno.
39:08Good.
39:09Fantastic.
39:10I've got to hand it to you, Jaime.
39:11That's a real job you've got there.
39:13It's a hot hand.
39:15Cold water.
39:16Cold water.
39:17Cold water.
39:18Cold water.
39:19Okay.
39:20All right, now we're into the makeup department.
39:26What good is a mannequin or what good is a woman unless she has her makeup on?
39:30It's the same theory.
39:31Really?
39:32Did you just say that?
39:33I sure as heck did.
39:34Man, I'll tell you what.
39:35I love...
39:36I didn't.
39:37You did.
39:38I did.
39:39You did.
39:40Got it.
39:41Now, these people here do exactly what women all over the world do.
39:44When they get up in the morning, they transform themselves into something lovely with the use
39:49of makeup.
39:53These gentlemen here take an inanimate object and transform them into something beautiful
39:59and lovely through the use of makeup.
40:04The creativity of the makeup is done by our creative director and by our sculptor.
40:09When they create a new line, they do a new makeup depending upon what Maybelline or whatever
40:14the cosmetics house is doing.
40:15Mm-hmm.
40:16These people here then get a mask, which you see on the walls here.
40:20And each mask is numbered.
40:22So if the order calls for 04-3, they pull the mask off and they copy it.
40:27I like that 04-3.
40:28I do too.
40:29I like all of them.
40:30But they do not create.
40:32They just copy.
40:33They copy.
40:34What are you thinking about?
40:37What is going through your head?
40:40Heather was thoughtful.
40:42Heather cared about the other people in the window.
40:45You just lost your cell phone.
40:49Don't.
40:50This is Oscar.
40:53Oscar is our chief makeup artist.
40:55He's in charge of this department.
40:57It takes him about one hour to do one makeup.
41:00One face.
41:01That's the rule of thumb here.
41:04Oh, no.
41:05It looks like I just gave her a black eye.
41:08It's just...
41:09This is just a great mystery to me.
41:12Yeah.
41:13I don't know what to do.
41:14I mean, I don't even know how to touch her.
41:15I'm holding her by her throat.
41:16The whole thing feels wrong.
41:20Look at that.
41:21I gave her a big old bushy mess there.
41:23Let me see.
41:24Let me see.
41:25Oh, my God.
41:26Want me to sign my name here?
41:28Yeah.
41:29A little bit of yellow.
41:30I'd like to put some sleep in the corner of her eye right here.
41:32Yeah.
41:33I feel like she just woke up.
41:34Marry us.
41:35I'm here, too.
41:40A makeup artist is born.
41:42A star.
41:43A star.
41:44You like?
41:45You jealous?
41:46Should we put arms on her or just let it go like this?
41:47Let's go where it is.
41:48I think we just let her go like this.
41:50It's fantastic.
41:53Okay.
41:54Oscar.
41:55You're very kind.
41:57Norm.
41:58I appreciate it.
42:00I'll never forget you.
42:01Will you ever forget her?
42:02Oh, no.
42:03Not at all.
42:04Will you?
42:06Heather had hair like yours.
42:08The color of honey.
42:10Long and flowing.
42:12Of course, Heather also had a face.
42:15Yeah, these are maggots.
42:16You know how I wound up on a maggot farm?
42:18I was up in Alaska shooting a story about geese and a guy came up to me and said, Mike, you ever been on a maggot farm?
42:29And I said, no.
42:30And he said, would you like to?
42:31And I said, sure.
42:32And he said, I know of one.
42:34And I said, great.
42:35And that's how dirty jobs happen.
42:36Now, I don't know if you and I are ever going to run into each other and I don't know if you've got a line on a maggot farm, but if you know of a dirty job and you'd like me to hear about it, don't count on the fact that you and I are going to meet in Alaska or anywhere else.
42:52Go to discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs and tell me all about it.
42:56If it's good like this, I'll find you.
43:02Travis, where exactly the work taking place?
43:04We're underneath the center of the mobile home.
43:07Okay, but we're in California, jackass.
43:12Next question.
43:13I'm taking job applications.
43:15Are you?
43:16Yeah.
43:17Hey, that's great.
43:18As soon as I get out of here, I'll fill one out.
43:19Okay.
43:20All right.
43:21I'll be using pencil and invisible ink.
43:24She's the ideal woman.
43:25He's not going to talk back to you.
43:28Don't send me angry letters, okay?
43:30He said it.
43:31I didn't.
