00:00My name's Mike Rowe, and this is my job.
00:05I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:09I recommend having these on when you're working with them.
00:12That will ruin your love life for a week.
00:14I might improve my love life.
00:16Oh, okay.
00:17Hard-working men and women who earn an honest living.
00:19We have been doing some research on dung beetles.
00:22The dung beetles are the beetles, of course, that live in the poo.
00:24Right.
00:25Doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:30Now, get ready to get dirty.
00:39Coming up on Dirty Jobs.
00:40Do you normally drink milk?
00:42Milk normally comes from cows.
00:45Well, not here.
00:47At this most unusual dairy, milk comes from camels.
00:52Call the cops!
00:54He's drinking camel milk!
00:56I learn many surprising facts about these cool creatures from the hot desert.
01:00Show just got a little weird.
01:02And I shake things up as I probe for the truth.
01:05There you go.
01:06In a story with a kick.
01:08Okay, and we're done!
01:09Okay, we're done!
01:10Oh God.
01:12Oh...
01:13Oh...
01:14In the Sahara Desert, temperatures can soar to over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
01:37Fortunately, these camels are ideally suited to endure that kind of extreme heat.
01:42In Southern California, where temperatures can sometimes climb to the mid-70s, it's not that big a deal.
01:51You know? I mean, it's actually kind of comfortable if you're a camel.
01:59No tongue. No tongue.
02:07That's camel poo, which leads me to believe that I'm in the right place.
02:11This, of course, is a camel. Upstaging me again. Nancy and Gil are over here.
02:16Gil, where am I exactly?
02:18We're at the Oasis Camel Dairy.
02:19The Oasis Camel Dairy.
02:22Located on a 34-acre ranch in Ramona, California,
02:26the Oasis Camel Dairy is the only place in the United States that produces camel milk.
02:31How many camels?
02:32We have 18 camels altogether.
02:33And how many boys do you have?
02:35Too many. We have lots of boys. Not enough girls over here.
02:38And not always the way.
02:39Yeah, exactly.
02:43Gil was introduced to camels about 17 years ago and fell in love with them.
02:47Shortly after that, he bought his first baby camels from a breeder in Arizona.
02:52Now he's got 18 Arabian camels here on the ranch.
02:56Some people say camels are mean, nasty creatures.
03:00Not so, say Gil and Nancy.
03:01Troy loves the camels. I mean, he has a special bond with this one.
03:05We don't charge extra for that, either.
03:08Oh, yeah. Wow.
03:10They really are nice animals.
03:11As professional animal trainers, Gil and Nancy have interacted with a lot of different kinds of animals.
03:17Camels, they say, are some of the most intelligent and sensitive,
03:21similar to dogs in the way they deal with people.
03:24And like dogs, camels like to be touched and stroked.
03:27They're very, very, they're very affectionate. They're very canesthetic.
03:31Aesthetic?
03:32Canesthetic.
03:33What's that? Canesthetic, what's that mean?
03:34Just very touchy, very, they like a lot of contact.
03:38Will she be using words like canesthetic, Gil, throughout the day, you think?
03:40No, that was it. That was my only big word.
03:41That was it?
03:42That was it.
03:42All right. So this one doesn't need to be milked because she doesn't have a baby.
03:47Exactly.
03:47Yes.
03:48Which ones do need to be milked?
03:49The three in the milking pan.
03:51Where's the milking pan?
03:52It's over there. And we're going to bring the camels over here to the milking parlor.
03:57This is your parlor?
03:57This is our parlor.
03:59Uh-huh. Okay. Can I help in some way?
04:01You can do, yeah. Yeah, hopefully. Hopefully you can help. That's our plan.
04:07Another ringing endorsement from the camel lady.
04:09Yeah, you can help.
04:12And we're going to start with Shiva. This is the camel right over here.
04:15Uh-huh.
04:15There you go.
04:16Camels get milked twice a day, morning and night.
04:19They're very easygoing. We talk to them real slowly and real easily.
04:23So as long as they know what we're expecting out of them, they're very, very cooperative.
04:26Stay there, love.
04:27It's just like my crew, actually.
04:28Oh.
04:29No sudden moves.
04:31Don't use big words.
04:33Move slowly.
04:34Each camel can give about a gallon per milking.
04:36So this pen in here right now has all the babies, and they're waiting to ask their mothers for milk.
04:42So this is how we do it one at a time.
04:44So what we're going to do is we're going to wait here just one sec.
04:46Hello, baby.
04:47Hello, Shiva.
04:48And then her baby's going to come out.
04:49It takes about 18 months to wean a baby camel.
04:51And then we're going to, now you can go ahead and keep walking all the way over into here.
04:54Mm-hmm.
04:55There you go.
04:57Okay.
04:57Now, camel milking is a little bit different than dairy cows.
05:00If the baby doesn't get in there and ask the mother for milk, there isn't any milk.
05:04And it's all part of being nomadic and really being much more of a wild animal.
05:07So in a cow dairy, you know, all the gals come into the parlor.
05:10You're okay, sweetheart.
05:11So what we're doing right now is we're just kind of letting that baby get in there.
05:15Oh, okay.
05:16Now, once the baby gets in here, watch right up here to the mother's head.
05:18Mm-hmm.
05:19See how she's kind of looking around a little bit?
05:20Yeah.
05:21Her head's moving.
05:22That's all going to stop.
05:23When she's decided, I'm going to give my baby milk, she'll get very, very still and release oxytocin.
05:28It's a brain chemical.
05:29Mm-hmm.
05:29And that oxytocin causes the muscle contractions that cause the milk to go into the teeth.
05:34So as a milker right now, what you're doing is you're watching what that baby's doing.
05:37Now, if you look up at the mom, see how still and high her head is?
05:41Yep.
05:41So she's releasing oxytocin.
05:43In her brain.
05:44Yeah.
05:44And then it travels through the bloodstream.
05:46Uh-huh.
05:47So those teats right there that look pretty darn huge, they're going to start filling up like water balloons.
05:53When she drops the milk, that's when we want to run in with our buckets and start milking.
05:58So, Gil, can I go ahead and...
06:00Yeah, she just drops.
06:01So go ahead.
06:01We can go ahead and give her some grain, and then we'll get you in there to milk her also.
06:05And they have four teats, so we'll have one person on each side milking as fast as they can.
06:08Right.
06:09And they only give milk for 90 seconds, and that's it.
06:11So once that milk appears, we just have 90 seconds to run in there and milk as fast as we can.
06:15Okay, now I want you to warm up your hands before you put your hands on those fun bags.
06:19And know that camels know who's in there.
06:21They know who's in there.
06:22Uh-huh.
06:22So you just want to, gosh, you just want to kind of squeeze at the top and then gently work your hands down.
06:29Working down.
06:29Yeah.
06:30And then just kind of watch that you don't get kicked or peed on or anything bad.
06:35So just get in there.
06:36Gil's going to be milking on the other side.
06:37Excellent.
06:37So you're going to be able to see how to do that.
06:39All right, show me, Gil.
06:40There you go.
06:40Just get your hands in there.
06:43And squeeze.
06:43Now you can stand up because it's a camel.
06:45No, Mike, you have to milk.
06:46You're not holding it.
06:46Oh, I can't.
06:47Well, I don't want to, what's he doing?
06:49Yeah, I'll do that.
06:50Okay.
06:50And now, there you go.
06:51There you go.
06:52There you go.
06:53Yeah, you kind of have to have a little hip back to it.
06:54And then squeeze the top and then hold the top.
06:56There you go.
06:57Oh, yeah.
06:58There you go.
06:59Oh, no, I know all about this.
07:02Oh, yeah.
07:02Now, right now, you and Gil are the only people in the U.S. doing this because this is pretty much the only place that anybody milks camels.
07:09Well, there you go.
07:09There you go.
07:10Me and Gil.
07:11And our 90 seconds is nearly up, which is a little bit more.
07:15Yeah, I'm really not good for much more than 90 seconds myself.
07:18There you go.
07:22Camels can be milked several times a day, producing a little over two gallons of milk.
07:26You're lasting a lot longer than 90 seconds, I'll tell you that.
07:29Well, I've had a lot of practice.
07:30Yeah.
07:31That's a good endorsement.
07:34You're going to rest.
07:35Lasting longer than 90 seconds.
07:39How long can you last?
07:40I think I've proven.
07:42I can go the full 90 seconds.
07:47Okay, and she's done.
07:48She's done.
07:49There we go.
07:49And she's done.
07:50Okay, good.
07:51You've got to read those girl signals.
07:53Now, let's see how you did.
07:54Excellent.
07:56Really?
07:56No.
07:57But it's okay.
07:57It's okay.
07:58It's okay because that was your first time.
07:59For your first time, that was very good.
08:01Thanks.
08:01Thanks.
08:02Now, who buys the milk?
08:03And are you allowed to sell it?
08:04Well, right now, because the benefits of camel milk are in its raw state, so we drink the
08:10milk, my friends and family, Gil's friends and family, we can drink our milk.
08:15We can't, however, sell it to the general public.
08:20Nice work, Sheba.
08:21In most parts of the world, before milk can be sold, it's got to be pasteurized.
08:24It's a heating process that kills potentially harmful microbes.
08:28Raw milk advocates argue that the pasteurization process kills the benefits of, well, raw milk.
08:35As usual, I don't know what's right.
08:37And the camels, they don't care.
08:39As long as I don't squeeze them too hard, they're happy.
08:42That's awesome.
08:42Okay, those were the easy camels.
08:44The next girl is younger, so this is her first season being milked.
08:48What's her name?
08:49Jamequa?
08:49Jameela.
08:50Jameela.
08:50And she's having a harder time relaxing into it, so she might just move around a little bit.
08:57Yeah, that's just a little bit.
08:59So what's going on here, by the way?
09:01We're going to show you how these work later, these calluses.
09:04Oh, oh, oh, don't cry.
09:07It's okay.
09:07You kicked me in a bad place.
09:09Did you really?
09:10I'm sorry.
09:12Go ahead, get in there.
09:13You're all right.
09:14Later.
09:14You're all right.
09:15Just get in there, just watch yourself a little bit, and just go slow again.
09:20Back on it.
09:21I'm better right-handed.
09:22Are you good?
09:23Do you want to do the back one a little bit too now that she's digging you?
09:25Oh, you're so perfect.
09:30Nice.
09:31Actually, I've never seen her get better after she kicks once.
09:34And there you go.
09:35I should have said that.
09:37You were doing really good there.
09:39You're doing great, and she kind of digs you a little.
09:42You're all right.
09:42I can see that, yeah.
09:43We're insured.
09:43We're fast.
09:44We're great.
09:44You're insured?
09:45Good.
09:46You're a good girl.
09:47Good girl, Jammies.
09:48Jammies, come on.
09:49He's a nice man.
09:50I am a nice man.
09:51Oh, God.
09:51Okay, and we're done.
09:53Okay, we're done.
09:54That's what we're talking about.
09:56Oh, ****.
09:59Hey, you know what?
09:59Can we play that back in slow motion?
10:01For those of you at home that missed it.
10:03Nice.
10:03At Dirty Jobs, we're all about safety.
10:05And that's why we never let cameras get closer than 18 inches to a kicking camel hoof, which
10:10is plenty safe for the camera.
10:13Okay, and we're done.
10:15Okay, we're done.
10:17That's what we're talking about.
10:20We got old Dave's attention there.
10:22Nobody got hurt, so it's good.
10:27That's what we're talking about.
10:28All right, so we lived.
10:29We survived.
10:31You did really good.
10:32You are one upbeat lady.
10:35Coming up, this camel can go for miles without water.
10:39But how often do you need to change your oil?
10:41Every day.
10:42You're kidding.
10:43So that's what we have over here is the motor oil.
10:46A strange lesson in camel maintenance.
10:49You're good.
10:50And then...
10:51So you want to get really, really close to them.
10:53I go to a very familiar place.
10:56What, that was gross?
10:57That's all right.
10:57I'm good.
10:58Yeah, stick around.
11:00Later.
11:00Oh, jeez.
11:01What in the heck?
11:03That impresses the female camels.
11:04Down at the camel farm, love is in the air.
11:07I'm sorry to participate in this, but you should see what I'm seeing, Goldie.
11:12Oh, yeah.
11:19Camel milk.
11:20Gil and Nancy tell me that people really do drink it.
11:23Sweet?
11:24Yes, it is.
11:24It's really good.
11:25It's really good.
11:26So you say it's low-fat, but it takes...
11:27It tastes very rich.
11:28It does.
11:29And you know, it's one of those, because of the way it's got a very small molecule, when
11:34you drink it, you know when you eat something that's really good for you and you feel it
11:37go into the systems in your body?
11:38Feel it.
11:39Usually on these jobs, something bad makes its way into my body.
11:43I wasn't sure I could handle something good.
11:47I'm going to test it first.
11:48Okay.
11:51Call the cops!
11:52He's drinking camel milk.
11:55Do you normally drink milk?
11:56Are you?
11:58Yeah.
11:59Because if you have any problems with dairy, you won't have problems with this.
12:02Why?
12:02It doesn't have the things that make people allergic to cow's milk.
12:06What are those things?
12:07Is that lactose?
12:08Lactose, yeah.
12:09Yeah.
12:09It's the closest milk to human mother's milk, so it's like having mother's milk.
12:12Unless that creeps you out a little bit.
12:13Yeah, exactly.
12:14If that creeps you out.
12:14Well, at this age, yeah.
12:15My mom and I are still very close, but it's, you know.
12:18Until the regulations change, Gil and Nancy are looking for ways to legally share the raw
12:23milk with the public.
12:25In the meantime, they'll just drink it themselves and provide it to high-end horse and alpaca
12:30ranches, where animals that are sick or injured can benefit from the milk's antiviral
12:35and antibacterial properties.
12:39And now we're going to go out in the pasture with them with a whole bunch of food.
12:42Super.
12:42And it'll be fantastic.
12:43And what kind of food do they eat again?
12:45They eat a low-protein forage.
12:48So, in other words, if you have a horse and you give them really high-protein alfalfa,
12:52it makes them really hot and it makes them really great for performance, but camels' bodies
12:57aren't built for that.
12:58Camels' bodies are built for a low-quality food, because in the desert where they live, it's
13:03just sticks and...
13:04Sand.
13:04Sand.
13:05Sand.
13:06Yeah.
13:06So, we use Bermuda grass hay.
13:09That seems to have been our best mix that we came up with.
13:13Ilanansi's herd is made up of Arabian camels, also known as dromedaries.
13:17These camels have a single hump.
13:19This hump stores fat, not water.
13:22The fat helps the camels survive when food is scarce.
13:25The hump also insulates the camels from heat and cold.
13:29Cool.
13:30Okay, now we can just go in with these guys.
13:31If the camels come on top of you and they get too close, put your hands up in the air,
13:36shake your hands and go ch-ch-ch.
13:37And they are so sensitive, ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
13:40They'll just get out of your way.
13:42Ch-ch-ch.
13:43Okay.
13:44We just want to spread this around.
13:46Yeah, we'll take this hay and just throw it all over the place over here.
13:49Feeding time is not just about the food, it's also a perfect opportunity to check on the
13:54health and well-being of the herd.
13:56So you do a little visual inspection.
13:58Exactly.
13:58You do a visual inspection of each one to see if they're feeling good, nobody's limping.
14:04Right.
14:04Part of that visual inspection is to check the pads, that thick callous skin that builds
14:09up on a camel's knees and chest.
14:12The pads that we keep talking about, those form naturally or are those calluses that occur
14:19from contact with the ground?
14:21They're both.
14:23You know, actually the chest pad right over here underneath the camel, that's actually
14:26there when they're born.
14:27And then these pads over here form after time.
14:30That's hard as like a rock.
14:32It is, isn't it?
14:33Yeah, you can knock on that.
14:34And these are the points that come into contact with the ground.
14:36With the camel lays down, that's at these five points over here.
14:40And then that way some cool air can blow under them.
14:42If there's thorns or rocks, this is what it comes into contact with over here.
14:45So it's just like that skin on the back of your elbow.
14:47Exactly.
14:48Now this camel over here has a problem with her chest pad.
14:52What's the problem?
14:53Well, she probably laid down a lot in the mud, but you got a little crack over here in this
14:57area and it was infected earlier.
15:00We tried all kinds of stuff on it and we found out that what the Bedouins use is burnt motor
15:04oil.
15:05They go to their cars when they do their oil change, they take the motor oil, they squirt
15:08it on there.
15:09And since we've been doing that, we've been getting better every day.
15:12So that's what we have over here is the motor oil.
15:15And let me rub some burnt motor oil on an infected camel pad.
15:19Exactly.
15:19That's great.
15:20I've never done that.
15:21Never, ever done that.
15:22Here, let's go on this side over here.
15:23So let's pull some of that motor oil out of there.
15:28Now that may have been too much.
15:30You're good.
15:31That's a good amount.
15:32And then what we want to do over here is kind of rub it in this area.
15:36And that's the area right in there that's already growing back.
15:39I'm telling you, we've been working on this for a year and nothing helped until we did
15:42the motor oil.
15:43There you go.
15:43And just squirt it in there and then use your hand and kind of rub it a little bit in
15:47that place.
15:47And that's it.
15:49That's her.
15:50That's enough.
15:50That's her treatment.
15:51Yeah.
15:51Every day she gets that treatment on her pad and it's getting better.
15:56And it's hard to treat because she lays down on it and she weighs 1,500 pounds.
16:00Yeah.
16:00And she lays down on it every few hours or so to rest.
16:06Coming up.
16:07Okay, this will be a scary one.
16:08Come here.
16:09Meet Bobo, the car-loving camel.
16:12Telling me this guy's having sex with cars?
16:15If it will let him.
16:17Then, Gil may understand what this camel is telling him.
16:26I need a translator.
16:27I gotta know.
16:28What the hell is that?
16:29It's the secret language of camels.
16:31Push.
16:33Come on, boys.
16:33Come on, come on.
16:34Later, it's the most reliable desert taxi in the world.
16:38And the most painful.
16:39Ooh.
16:40Oh.
16:47Another part of the camel that requires a thorough inspection is in between the camel's two massive
16:52toes.
16:53Mm-hmm.
16:54Out in the open pasture, foxtail weeds can get stuck between the camel's toes and create
16:59painful sores.
17:00This area is very sensitive, even ticklish, so checking the camel's toes is tricky.
17:07Okay.
17:07We just kind of get used to getting in here.
17:09Now, she's obviously, we've done this a lot, but you can see I can just kind of get in there
17:12and dig between the toes a little bit and see she's totally clean and totally clear.
17:16Mm-hmm.
17:16Now, you're really putting yourself in a very vulnerable position with a camel that's not
17:21handleable because their first kick would be kick up and forward.
17:24And these are, you know, these nails are pretty heavy duty.
17:27Sure.
17:27So, you're just going to want to always be ready to get yourself out of harm's way.
17:32Right.
17:32Because they don't have to flick at you hard to accidentally really hurt you.
17:36And they can break a four by four by a back kick with this foot right here.
17:38They nearly took Barsky's head off earlier.
17:40Yeah, that's true.
17:41I'll hear that.
17:42Yeah.
17:42Okay, this will be a scary one.
17:44Come here.
17:45This is Boo Boo.
17:46He's a wonderful boy.
17:48We got him just a year ago.
17:50He was a bull that had no job.
17:53So, that can potentially make him a very dangerous animal.
17:56Ho, ho, ho.
17:57A bull with no job?
17:59What are you saying?
17:59Well, no girls.
18:01Okay.
18:01No girls to breed.
18:02And if you're going to have him a bull, they need to be able to do that.
18:05So, here he is in a pen alone with no one to love.
18:09And then they start fixating on vehicles and people and just pretty much anything that
18:15they think they can get to hold still.
18:17Now, he's been castrate.
18:19Well, just hold on a minute.
18:20You're telling me this guy's having sex with cars?
18:23If it will let him.
18:26What kind?
18:26I mean, it's just...
18:27Small cars.
18:28Like a compact, typically?
18:30He likes the tractor.
18:31Good man.
18:31So, the bull, he's frustrated.
18:37He was.
18:38Because there's no ladies in his life.
18:40There's no gals.
18:41And also, when you go down to handle his feet now, he's going to be different about it.
18:47Because if I were another bull camel and I wanted to dominate him, I'd grab him by the
18:52foot and try to put him on the ground.
18:54So, when you get your hand in there by his foot, we've got to be aware that that's kind
18:57of a mixed message.
18:58That was maybe the longest, most potentially off-putting disclaimer I've heard in a while.
19:03Well...
19:03I mean, to sum up...
19:04We're all about safety.
19:05To sum up, yeah, I can...
19:07Here's the safety message I just had.
19:09This camel that used to have his genitalia no longer does.
19:13There may be some residual grumpiness.
19:14As you clean the camel toe, be aware that he might mistake you for a car, which he'd
19:19have sex with, or another bull, which he'd like to kill.
19:23Get in there.
19:24That was...
19:24That was true.
19:25All kidding aside, Gil and Nancy tell me that camels are actually very affectionate creatures.
19:30And if you touch and stroke them during their camel toe inspection, they might not kill
19:34you.
19:35Which is nice.
19:38Do the front ones first.
19:39Yeah.
19:40There you go.
19:41Okay.
19:42Hey, buddy.
19:42And he's very, very gentle.
19:44Good.
19:44Those are nice guys.
19:45Good.
19:45That's a good boy.
19:46And see, so you're just doing a little training.
19:48When you touch him in there, do you feel anything in there?
19:50Nope.
19:50And then he moves away, so let him, and then you're going to go back in there again.
19:52Now, this next time when you touch him, you pull out before he pulls out.
19:57Does that make sense?
19:58I pull out first.
19:59Yes.
19:59No, that makes perfect sense.
20:01Okay.
20:01Because that way, it's not like he pulled away from you, and then it's a negative thing.
20:04Exactly.
20:05Do a little rubbing down there.
20:06You want to leave him wanting more.
20:07Yes.
20:07And then when you come up from that, like, just give him a little...
20:11Yeah.
20:13There's your buddy.
20:13Hey, hey, how are you?
20:15And then that's training.
20:15How are you?
20:16Sorry, there are no more testicles.
20:17Just going to reach in the toe for a second.
20:19You're all good.
20:20That's good.
20:20You're great.
20:21There you go.
20:21And then scratch him on the neck so it stays positive.
20:23That's good.
20:23Still me.
20:24Now, try to do a little bit on the hind foot, just not a lot, because that's going to be
20:28a more triggered reaction.
20:30Sure.
20:30Sure.
20:30Please don't kick me.
20:31And take your hand and run your hand down his leg.
20:34There you go.
20:34Hey, buddy.
20:35Just checking the toes.
20:37Just checking the toes.
20:38There you go.
20:38Look at that.
20:39You're all good there.
20:40Good.
20:40Good.
20:41Good.
20:42Good.
20:43Look how large you are.
20:45You're enormous.
20:46Doing a visual inspection at this point, everything looks great.
20:50Super.
20:50Nothing left to do here.
20:53The other thing that we can do today while we have them all here is we can try to get
20:56a herd temperature.
20:59Because camels' temperature can fluctuate depending on the weather.
21:02If we do have an issue, a health issue, and the vet needs to determine what the norm
21:07temperature is, we periodically do, you know, about once a week we do what's called a herd
21:11temperature, and we go through and just randomly select several individuals and just get an
21:15ambient temperature.
21:17So that's what we'd like to...
21:18You're talking thermometers in the butt.
21:20Exactly.
21:20Yeah, let's do that.
21:21So you want to get really, really close to them, and you're going to take the tail,
21:24pick it up, and then it's right in here, just like that, and then you put it in there.
21:32Okay, well, this one was 97.6.
21:36Right there.
21:37So now we can go to another one and check another one and see what she is like.
21:41There you go.
21:43Look at that little butthole opened up for me.
21:46Oh, there appears to be some...
21:47Just, you just push past.
21:49Push right through the poo.
21:50Did you press the button to start it off again?
21:52Okay, it's not as gross.
21:54What, that was gross?
21:56It's all right.
21:56I'm good.
21:57I can't imagine you grossed out.
21:59I can't imagine any sight of a baby.
22:00I'm a little grossed out right now.
22:01Stick around.
22:03Mm-hmm.
22:04Okay, let me just get some more poo out of there.
22:05There we go.
22:06Okay, nice.
22:0694.8.
22:10Yeah, she's 96.7.
22:12Okay.
22:13Okay.
22:14Nice.
22:14Yeah, nice.
22:15Good.
22:16This is Alibaba.
22:17Hey, Alibaba.
22:18How are you, buddy?
22:20Is it reading?
22:21Oh, yeah.
22:22It says, help me.
22:2698.6.
22:28Let's see.
22:29This camel's a person.
22:30Okay.
22:32And quite a healthy one.
22:33Okay, you can pull it out when it's done.
22:34When it's done, it's done.
22:35Substantial penalty for early withdrawal.
22:39Let's do a donkey.
22:40Heck, I'm in the neighborhood.
22:41Oh, no.
22:42No?
22:43No, you don't do anything to a donkey unless you ask first.
22:46They're tough animals.
22:47Unless you ask first.
22:50We need a rim shot.
22:52Okay, so let's do it.
22:52I'm pretty sure I just did one.
22:55God.
22:55Ba-dum-bum.
22:57Coming up.
22:57If an Arab felt sick, he'd take one of these when they're fresh, pop it in his mouth, eat
23:01it, and then he'd be fine the next day.
23:04Is that true?
23:05Or just a pile of poo?
23:06Find out next.
23:07Oh, jeez.
23:08And then?
23:09What in the heck?
23:10Although he's a very good boy, bull camels do have the reputation for...
23:14Killing you.
23:15Yes.
23:15The killer meets the lady, and the lady meets the slobber.
23:19It's a classic tale of romance.
23:26Gil says that camel poo is pretty amazing stuff.
23:31This was a cure for dysentery years ago.
23:34If an Arab felt sick, he'd take one of these when they're fresh, pop it in his mouth, eat
23:38it, and then he'd be fine the next day.
23:40Another true story.
23:41Oh, come on, man.
23:42So, once upon a time, the cure for dysentery was eating camel crap.
23:49Fresh camel crap.
23:51Some scientists believe the beneficial ingredient in the fresh camel poop is Bacillus satylus,
23:57a microorganism found in water, soil, and decomposing plant material.
24:03And it was discovered by the British?
24:05By the Germans.
24:06Actually, World War II in North Africa, more Germans were dying in dysentery than anything
24:10else, so they started following the Arabs around because they weren't dying, and they
24:13found out the Arab had a stomachache, and popped one in his mouth, and he was fine the
24:16next day.
24:17The theory goes like this.
24:19When Bacillus satylus is ingested, it stimulates beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract,
24:25boosting the immune system, which in turn knocks out the intestinal infection.
24:30So, the Germans, when they didn't eat the camel poop, they synthesized it and went for there.
24:35We know all kinds of stories about camels.
24:37What's in his eyes there?
24:38Boogers.
24:39Just eye boogers.
24:41You can take those off if you want.
24:42I tend to do that, but I know it creeps a lot of other people out.
24:45It really does.
24:46See?
24:46Yes, just a little eye booger.
24:47Let me see that.
24:47Okay.
24:48Sorry.
24:49It's not from a camel's eye.
24:51Now it's disinfected.
24:52Now you can eat it.
24:54They washed your hair with the urine.
24:56Camel urine, they use it on their hair, and it kills all the parasites, and it turns the
25:00same color of henna.
25:01Yes.
25:01Hello, sweetie.
25:03Is there anything about the slobber that'll, you know, kill you?
25:06Actually, the slobber is really good for you.
25:09Come on.
25:10No, I'm really.
25:10Everything about camels.
25:11Come on, man.
25:12You're really selling the camels pretty hard.
25:16We drink their milk, we eat their poo, and we bathe in their slobber.
25:19What's weird?
25:20So...
25:21I know, I know.
25:24It's not a very good show.
25:27What can you do?
25:28It's cable.
25:29So we're going to go in and we're going to get Clyde.
25:31Clyde.
25:31We're going to do a little bit of work with Clyde.
25:33And if he shakes his head, his lip, go the other way.
25:36You're good looking.
25:38Camels are highly social creatures.
25:40They thrive on positive interactions with their handlers, or someone pretending to be
25:44a handler.
25:46Pass.
25:46That was it.
25:47You pass.
25:47Exactly.
25:48So what are we going to do with Clyde?
25:49We're going to take him out to the trailer and tie him over there.
25:52And then I'm going to show you how we take the halter off, actually, when he's tied the
25:56trailer.
25:57Because when we get to a job, we want to put out a really nice halter on him.
26:00So we have to take this halter off completely and then put a new halter on him without him
26:04getting away or running away.
26:05And the purpose of putting a halter on him is why?
26:07Yes, we dress him up when we're doing our shows at Nativities.
26:11So we're going to be really nice.
26:11We're going to dress him up like he's good in the Nativity.
26:13Exactly.
26:22I got to know, what the hell was that?
26:25Well, he used to be a bull, and he used to have a big doula that he would have come out,
26:30and he still thinks that he's a bull.
26:31So he was saying, you're going to dress me up, but I'm still the guy, I'm the man, and
26:34he showed off a little bit over there.
26:38Come on, Clyde, I apologize in advance.
26:40I have a feeling this is going to be somewhat undignified.
26:45When the camels dress up and go to Nativity pageants, parades, and corporate events, they
26:49earn supplemental income for the Oasis Camel Dairy.
26:52But they also have a good time, because Gil and Nancy make the work challenging and fun.
26:57That's for you.
26:58Okay, now you can untie him, and we're going to bring him over here and see if he'll kush
27:02for you.
27:04In the world of camel training, kush means lie down.
27:07It's a natural thing for camels to do, and it makes working in Nativity scene a lot easier
27:12for both the camel and the trainer.
27:14There you go.
27:15Now stand in front of him, and now you're just going to pull on his rope, and you're going
27:20to keep saying kush until he goes down.
27:21So just keep tugging, just like that.
27:23Kush.
27:25Kush.
27:25There you go.
27:26Keep going.
27:27Kush.
27:28Kush Clyde.
27:31Perfect.
27:32Boy, look at you.
27:34You.
27:34Man, that was almost too easy, wasn't it?
27:36Maybe it was the halter.
27:38I think so.
27:38Well, it's subdued him.
27:41That is one festive camel.
27:45Now what do we do with him?
27:48Good.
27:48So when we're training them for riding, we'll do that.
27:51We'll get on him, sit in different places, and if he does jump up, you just slip off at
27:55the same time while you're training him.
27:57So it's the best training to start with.
27:58Okay.
27:59And we pet them everywhere and work with them.
28:01And you can see he's totally relaxed.
28:03If you're just tuning in, it's not what it looks like.
28:07Hup, hup, hup, hup.
28:10There you go.
28:11Are you good?
28:11Are you good?
28:12You're good.
28:12Well, there's some adjusting.
28:14I don't mean to be.
28:14It wouldn't be a disaster, but there's nothing I can do now.
28:18Now just, do you want to go back down?
28:20You want me to kush him again?
28:21What are my options?
28:22You can just slip off on your own, or you can, uh, here, he'll kush.
28:25Hold on.
28:25Yeah, yeah, let's go ahead and kush.
28:26The front's going to go first.
28:27Kush.
28:27Yeah, hey, hey, kush.
28:29Ooh, good camel.
28:30Nice.
28:31Nice one.
28:31There you go.
28:31There you go.
28:33Everything okay?
28:34It's good.
28:34I got my dickies on, so I'm, uh, I'm solid.
28:37Okay.
28:38Okay.
28:38I want you to just take off his halter.
28:45Don't tell me.
28:47Aw.
28:48Don't tell me.
28:49Okay.
28:49I'll never figure it out if you tell me.
28:51Don't tell me.
28:51Don't even do gestures.
28:53It's not charades.
28:54I have to learn.
28:55I have to learn, Nancy.
28:58Clyde, don't make me look like a chump.
28:59Okay, this goes over your eyes.
29:01There you go.
29:01Camels are nice animals.
29:02Clyde.
29:03Affectionate.
29:04Clyde.
29:05Smart.
29:06Clyde.
29:06All that jazz.
29:07Clyde.
29:08I'm talking to you the way I know you like this.
29:10It's kind of ignoring you on purpose.
29:11Clyde, of course he's peeing.
29:12He can't concentrate.
29:13But sometimes they can really piss you off.
29:17No one touches me when I pee.
29:18I'm Clyde.
29:22I can pee all day.
29:25Still peeing.
29:25I'm Clyde.
29:30Still peeing.
29:31You're remarkable.
29:32You're something else.
29:35Yeah, he's still going.
29:36That's good.
29:43Why do they wait until they have to go that bad?
29:45I mean, why not just not go?
29:46I think he's trying to avoid you.
29:47I think that's what he's doing, actually.
29:49It's like the longer it takes him to pee, the more you'll leave him.
29:51While you're going to stand here, maybe we'll just go home.
29:53It's like, you know, if I stand here and pee for a few hours, we'll just leave.
29:56Yeah, he's just going to be doing this for, I don't know, the next 20 minutes.
30:00Clyde, you're a machine.
30:07Dave, give that thing a shake, would you?
30:09Come on, man.
30:14Help a brother out.
30:15Okay, we're good.
30:16All right, Clyde, where were we?
30:17You know, you remember yesterday when he started peeing.
30:20Hey, look at me.
30:20My nose is in here.
30:22Here, come in front of him.
30:23Go on the other side of your rope.
30:25There you go.
30:27Now do it.
30:27There you go.
30:29See?
30:29There you go.
30:30Oh, there you go.
30:31Oh, look at that breath.
30:32Oh, your breath, Clyde.
30:35Clyde, what's Clyde been eating?
30:37Hay.
30:37Yeah, hay with poo in it.
30:40Coming up.
30:41Here comes trouble.
30:42This sexy sultan of slobber is not shy in the slightest.
30:46But he's been at it for a while.
30:48It's very impressive.
30:49Yeah.
30:50And then.
30:51It'll be fantastic.
30:52How to ride a camel and why you shouldn't.
30:55Oh, it's a lot of pain again.
31:03All right, what do you want to do next?
31:05We're going to make some baby camels.
31:07Let's go get the camel.
31:15How do camels make babies?
31:17Well, Gil and Nancy told me it was an interesting process.
31:21Turns out it was downright weird.
31:22But we don't like to keep him out with the whole herd.
31:25Now, watch the male, because the male's really going to start doing his doula and talking
31:28a lot and foaming.
31:30And he's going to get really excited.
31:33But that, this guy over here?
31:34He's got the doula.
31:34Oh, jeez.
31:36What in the heck?
31:38That's the soft palate.
31:39That's the doula we keep talking about.
31:41That impresses the female camels.
31:43He makes a loud noise with it.
31:44And the bigger, the better.
31:46And he swallowed it back into the back of his throat.
31:49And then when he gets excited again, he's going to have it come out again.
31:53The doula is a fleshy sack that usually resides in the camel's throat.
31:58Camels blow it full of air and flop it out of their mouths when they're threatened.
32:02Or when they want to impress a female.
32:04This display shows their dominance in the herd.
32:07The bigger the doula, the more dominant the camel.
32:10And the more attractive they are to the opposite sex.
32:13I'm going to need to see that again.
32:14I guess I will, right?
32:15You will a lot.
32:16Yeah.
32:16Yeah.
32:17A lot.
32:18That's a heck of a thing, man.
32:20That's a heck of a thing.
32:22A little doula flying out.
32:24Pooh flying out.
32:26Pee everywhere.
32:27Here comes trouble.
32:32Check out the slobber.
32:34Well, we want to make sure that you and Gil are safe.
32:38And there's a lot of distraction around right now.
32:40There's a lot of people.
32:41And he could interpret that as competition.
32:43So we just want to stay very aware that although he's a very good boy,
32:49bull camels do have the reputation for...
32:51Killing you.
32:52Yes.
32:53But if you always keep that in mind and stay safe, you're okay.
32:58It's when you...
32:59The people that get hurt or when something happens is when someone says,
33:02oh, he's my little sweetheart.
33:03Nothing's ever going to happen.
33:04You've been saying that all day.
33:05All day long.
33:06Here's my little sweetheart.
33:06Well, they are my little sweethearts, but that wasn't...
33:09All day long.
33:10And now it's all of a sudden they'll kill you.
33:11Yeah, this one's dangerous a little bit.
33:13All right.
33:13Okay, so that's the dangerous, slobbering boy.
33:17And here comes his girlfriend.
33:18Now, does Goldie know what's in store right now?
33:21Does she get it?
33:21Yeah, she does.
33:22In the moment, she will.
33:24Good boy.
33:25Good boy.
33:25Good.
33:26And then just go ahead and we're going to come this way a little bit.
33:28There you go.
33:29You're good.
33:30There you go.
33:30And stop right there.
33:31Easy, easy.
33:32You're good.
33:32I'm sorry to participate in this, but you've got to...
33:36You should see what I'm seeing, Goldie.
33:38There you go.
33:38Good work.
33:39Oh, yeah.
33:40All right.
33:41Yeah, give her a little bit more rope.
33:43Yeah, yeah.
33:43Perfect.
33:46Now, this is actually the hardest thing the male...
33:49To get down in that position behind her is really difficult
33:52because it takes a lot of thigh strength.
33:56Yeah.
33:58And this should take a few minutes.
34:00This, sometimes it goes 20 minutes.
34:02Get out of here.
34:0230 minutes.
34:03Yeah.
34:04He hasn't done it in a long time, so he might take his time today.
34:07Really.
34:08Is that how it works?
34:09We want to make sure that he's actually penetrating on the other side, so...
34:13You want me to have a look?
34:14Yeah, you can drop the rope.
34:16Each year, Gil and Nancy breed two to six camels.
34:19Last year, six babies were born.
34:22Kind of kneel in the crap to get the good look.
34:24Yeah.
34:25And you can actually see he's in the right.
34:28Well, what we had...
34:28Yeah, that little inflagrante delecto right there.
34:31That's a big...
34:32That was a big move.
34:33That's Latin.
34:34Yeah, nice.
34:35Yeah.
34:35Do you hear the squeak?
34:36I do.
34:37That's his teeth grinding.
34:39Wait a second.
34:41That.
34:49He's gnashing his teeth.
34:51Yeah, he's grinding his teeth.
34:53It's kind of a...
34:54It's a boy thing.
34:55It's over her face now.
34:56It's foam, is it?
34:57Yeah.
34:58He's blowing bubbles now.
35:00Tiny bubbles.
35:00Tiny.
35:04He's very happy.
35:06Oh, yeah.
35:07But he's been at it for a while.
35:09It's very impressive.
35:10Yeah.
35:10It's actually a little intimidating.
35:13Okay.
35:13There we go.
35:16Now we can go ahead and get this camel, get her out of here.
35:19I just can't.
35:20I mean, you know.
35:21Look at him.
35:22And now you're going to get a little doula.
35:23Nice work, Romy.
35:28We'll see you in the nativity scene.
35:31You betcha.
35:32Oh, we got to roll for you.
35:35Now, you mentioned washing the hair with the urine and eating the poo to prevent the dysentery.
35:40What can you do with that foam?
35:42Well, nothing.
35:44Nothing.
35:44Come on.
35:45Yeah, you tried?
35:45It's got to be a cappuccino.
35:47Come on.
35:47A cappuccino.
35:48I mean, it's so frothy.
35:50Oh, that would be so dangerous.
35:52That would be so bad.
35:52Well, it could be.
35:54I mean, what if he decided to bite you?
35:57Yeah, I'd like to see that.
35:58Oh, my God.
35:58He's got a nice steak.
36:01See, it's very slimy.
36:02Well, sure.
36:04Sure.
36:05Okay.
36:05We should get out of the pen and give him his privacy.
36:09Good boy, Romy.
36:12Any questions?
36:12I didn't think so.
36:30Coming up.
36:31How you doing, Trisha?
36:32I'm tall.
36:32Nice to see you.
36:33You're enormous.
36:34Saddle up for the Big Dirty Jobs Tamil Derby next.
36:37All right, you guys ready?
36:39Here we go.
36:39So we've got a new player on the scene.
36:50You're Trisha?
36:51Mm-hmm.
36:51Or Trish?
36:52Trisha.
36:52Trisha.
36:53Okay.
36:53And how does Trisha fit in here?
36:55Trisha's going to be one of the camel jockeys, and you're going to be one of the camel jockeys.
37:00So we've each got you both with your mount, and we're going to go clean them off, get them ready for saddles.
37:06Right.
37:06So let's, um, let's, uh, you two are going to take the camels up to the trailer so that we can blow them.
37:12Before any event with the public, the dusty camels always like a little air bath.
37:16There you go, and just cover his whole body.
37:18Sure.
37:19Head to toe.
37:19The camels like to roll in the dirt in order to clean themselves.
37:23So they're full of dust and dirt, and before we ride them, we want to get all of that off of them.
37:28Probably don't really ever get it all, do you?
37:30No.
37:30Is this something they enjoy?
37:33He does.
37:34He thinks it's like petting.
37:35He really enjoys it.
37:37Just watch his privates, because they don't like that being blown on so much.
37:42No privates.
37:43It's just the hair.
37:45You know what you're doing.
37:46You go ahead and blow.
37:46You're doing great.
37:48Good job.
37:49He likes it.
37:50Good.
37:54Oh.
37:56A little extra something.
37:59Blowing a camel.
38:00Dirty job.
38:03All right, so that's probably good for him, and then we're going to do camel number two.
38:06Camel number two.
38:06That'd be Jamal.
38:07Yes.
38:08Whether they're working an activity pageant or a parade, camels like to look good.
38:12You're done.
38:13Did a good job.
38:14Good.
38:15No more dust.
38:15We're good.
38:16So we saddle them up down there?
38:18Yeah.
38:18We're going to saddle them up down there and get them all ready.
38:21Should I grab some accoutrements?
38:22Yeah, yeah.
38:22Let's look and see what we have here.
38:24We have head pieces.
38:26That's a great move, yeah.
38:27Certainly good.
38:28In the front compartment of the camel trailer,
38:30Gil and Nancy store the costumes for their various camel events.
38:34Not only do the costumes look great,
38:35Perfect.
38:36They also get you into the mood for camel riding.
38:39All right.
38:40Let's ride some camels.
38:41Okay.
38:45Here at their ranch in Southern California,
38:48Gil and Nancy teach people the ancient art of camel riding.
38:52The show just got a little weird.
38:53Only the male camels are used for the rides.
38:58It gives them an activity they enjoy doing,
39:00and it gives the public an experience they'll never forget.
39:04I mean, I certainly haven't forgotten my camel riding experience.
39:07Oh, no.
39:08Nope, not by a long shot.
39:09Okay.
39:15Okay.
39:17Nice outfit.
39:18Thanks.
39:19Looks good.
39:19Thanks.
39:20I'm going to lose the hat.
39:21I can't really sell that.
39:22Okay.
39:25As you can see, the saddles aren't like regular horse's saddles.
39:28It's really just a bar to keep them from falling off the back.
39:30But you'll be surprised when you're up there,
39:32and you think, oh, my gosh, this is going to go bad.
39:34It really doesn't.
39:35It really works out very, very well.
39:37So we give them a little bit of padding
39:38to make this a comfortable ride for them as well.
39:42This is a tall camel to saddle.
39:43It actually makes him a little bit, oh, babe,
39:45a little bit more difficult to saddle just because he's so big.
39:48Right.
39:51What's this red thing?
39:52I don't know.
39:54Just in case folks at home missed that,
39:55this expert said, what's this red thing?
39:57And this expert said, I don't know.
40:00So keep rolling.
40:01Just act casual.
40:03It's a saddle.
40:04It's a saddle.
40:06They don't know.
40:07The camels are very relaxed creatures.
40:11Things hardly ever go wrong.
40:14Hardly.
40:18And it does feel a little scary at first,
40:19but then it's fabulous.
40:21You'll have a wonderful time.
40:23As with most things.
40:24You know, you've seen Lawrence of Arabia.
40:26They just run.
40:27It's just you're out there, and you just go.
40:30It'll be fantastic.
40:33Good boy.
40:34Nice.
40:35You know, Nancy warned me that the camels might buck.
40:38Nice work.
40:39I-B-K-I-I-A.
40:40She warned me that the saddle could slide off.
40:43She warned me not to let go.
40:45Sure.
40:46How you doing, Tricia?
40:47I'm tall.
40:48Nice to see you.
40:48You're enormous.
40:50You're the biggest kid in school.
40:51But Nancy did not warn me about a particularly male experience I might have
40:57while my camel gallops along at 20 miles an hour.
41:01Yeah-ha.
41:02Hoo-hoo-hoo.
41:03Oh, hoo-hoo.
41:05Yeah-ha.
41:06Oh, hoo-hoo.
41:08Yeah-ha.
41:09Good job.
41:09Ooh-hoo-hoo.
41:10Oh.
41:11Oh, there's a lot of pain.
41:13But it's exciting.
41:14And it's fun.
41:15But there's a lot of pain.
41:17That was wonderful.
41:18Let's go again?
41:28No, I think we've all made our point.
41:29I think everybody's cool.
41:30We could get another one, yeah.
41:32Further back.
41:34No, no, no.
41:34We'll get another one.
41:35Do you need another shot, Dave?
41:36Yeah, I'd love one.
41:37I said, do you need one?
41:38Yeah.
41:39All right, yeah, we're done.
41:40Does that mean you're done?
41:42No, let's do another one.
41:43Okay.
41:44You know, there's a famous symphony by Tchaikovsky.
41:46They usually play it around Christmas time.
41:48For some reason, it came to mind as I sat there upon my camel.
41:52Don't know why.
41:52Funny way the mind works.
41:54Let's go, let's go.
41:54Oh, geez.
41:56Come on, Tchaikovsky.
41:57Oh, ho, ho, ho.
41:58Oh, ho, ho, ho.
41:59Oh, ho, ho, ho.
42:01Oh, ho, ho, ho.
42:01Oh, ho, ho, ho.
42:03A lot of pain again.
42:05Oh, ho, ho, ho.
42:08Oh, man, I'd give, like, a lot of money for some stirrups.
42:11Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
42:13Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
42:14Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
42:15Set them, check their little toes, put thermometers into their bottoms.
42:19But riding camels, now, that's the experience will stay with me forever.
42:26Oh, and you can still walk.
42:27Look at you.
42:29No problem.
42:33Hey, you know, we're always on the lookout for new dirty jobs, so if you have one,
42:37this would be a great time to go to discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs and tell us all about
42:41it.
42:42Dirtier, the better.
42:44I mean, filthy.
42:46Find the top of grime and go right over it.
42:48That's okay with me.
42:49Don't hold back.
42:51You're still listening.
42:53You should be at the computer typing.
42:55Discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs.
42:57Help me find the light.
42:58Mike, do you want to unsaddle, or do you need a little break?
43:04Oh, no, we're done.
43:05This is all you now.
43:06We're going to cut straight to the hoof flying out.
43:08Really?
43:08Okay.
43:09Yeah.
43:09No one wants to see a camel unsaddled.
43:12Studies have shown viewers at home, they like the riding.
43:15They like the feeding.
43:16They love the milking.
43:17The breeding, they're crazy for it.
43:19But unsaddling, nobody's going to watch that.
43:22No, I mean, they don't care.
43:23I mean, look, I'd tell you otherwise, but I guarantee you.
43:27You're the expert.
43:28100%.
43:28This footage will never be used.
