00:00Thank you so much for coming this early.
00:24So tell us more about your sports.
00:26Pag-usapan na natin yan ang iyong hobby, as I may say.
00:32Personal connection niya with the sport Arnie's.
00:35Can you tell us more about this, Mayor?
00:37Yes. Good morning, Meg. Good morning, Sheila.
00:40Thank you for having me in this morning.
00:43Yun na nga po.
00:44Right now, we're here to discuss about one of our greatest hobbies and passion,
00:49which is Arnie's.
00:51And when I was mayor at one point,
00:53I hosted one of the biggest Arnie's competitions in the Pitan City.
00:59Mayor Bullitt, why Arnie's?
01:01So dinabi namin ang sports.
01:03Why choose to develop?
01:06And may mas makilala ang Arnie's sa inyong lugar?
01:10Actually, matagal na, no?
01:12I had the passion for Arnie's.
01:14I've been training since I was high school, college.
01:17And I used to train with Senator Migs Zubiri,
01:20who is one of the authors of RA 9850,
01:25declaring Arnie's as a national sport.
01:28So malaking bagay ang pagpopromote ng Arnie's in this part of our country,
01:34especially in Mindanao.
01:36And nabigyan pansin, no?
01:38Nakakalungkot kasi ang daming mga foreigners
01:41ang mas sinusuportahan
01:44and puhukuntang Pilipinas
01:46para pag-aralan ang sport na Arnie's and Cali.
01:50And I think it's about time that we,
01:53you know,
01:53we learn to love our own identity
01:59and our own sport as a Filipino.
02:01You just mentioned kanina,
02:02you hosted one of the biggest Arnie's events in the country.
02:07Well, ano sa tingin mo,
02:07why chose to host
02:09and how do you think na magbe-benefit
02:11ang ating mga kababayan dito?
02:14Well, actually,
02:14spin-off lang siya sa one of our promotions
02:17for heritage tourism, no?
02:19So ginawa na rin naming sports tourism.
02:22Dapitan is known for the place
02:24where our national hero,
02:26Dr. Roserizal, was exiled.
02:27And during his time,
02:29when he was in Dapitan,
02:30he used to teach students
02:32ages from 4 to 15
02:39the art of Arnie's
02:41because we all know
02:41that he was also a fencer, no?
02:43So it was a sport that he really treasured
02:47and he was really excelling at
02:49and that's something that we wanted to pursue as well, no?
02:51To start promoting heritage tourism
02:53and sports tourism within that part of the country.
02:56Sir Wulet,
02:59kilala ka as a sport advocate.
03:02How do you think sports,
03:04specifically Arnie's,
03:05contribute sa ating youth?
03:08Well,
03:09dapat lang, no?
03:11Nakakatulong because,
03:12siyempre,
03:13when it was passed,
03:14I think a lot of schools
03:16are now taking up Arnie's
03:18as one of their sports programs, no?
03:19And like I said,
03:21wala naman talaga tayong sports identity.
03:25Dapat nga,
03:26kung ako lang,
03:26may opinion lang,
03:27we should veer away from basketball
03:29kasi alam mo naman tayo
03:31na puro basketball ang Pilipinas.
03:32Yet,
03:33we haven't really,
03:34wala talaga tayong naipa-ilabas
03:38na magaling na pure Filipino
03:40na basketball player
03:42na pwede natin ipagmayabang.
03:43In fact,
03:44I think something that we should do,
03:46focus more on,
03:47is something where we can excel,
03:49like boxing,
03:51wherein,
03:51just recently,
03:52our National Treasurer,
03:55former Senator Manny Pacquiao,
03:58put up a very, very good fight
04:00with an 18-year-old,
04:0218 years younger than him,
04:04na kalaban.
04:05Kanina nabanggit mo,
04:06Mayor,
04:07the shift of the middle-aged man
04:10to sports and becoming more active.
04:13Can you be more specific
04:15doon sa statement mo na yan?
04:16Yeah,
04:17I think there's this change,
04:19no?
04:19There's a shift,
04:21there's a trend going on
04:22na itong mga tinawag na middle-aged men
04:26na,
04:27I don't know,
04:27nandun pa ako
04:28or mas bata
04:29or mas ano,
04:30but they're more prone
04:32to health and fitness
04:33and they start to realize
04:35na kaya pa,
04:36no?
04:37With proper training,
04:38discipline,
04:39and food intake,
04:40kaya pa lumaban.
04:42mag-toe-toe-toe
04:44with much younger competitors
04:46or opponents,
04:48no?
04:48Just like Mani Pacquiao.
04:50So,
04:50ngayon,
04:51if you notice,
04:52madami na rin
04:52mga ka-age ko
04:54na mas lalong
04:56into fitness
04:57and
04:57nagita mo,
04:58hindi na more,
04:59hindi na sila
05:00sa mga bars,
05:01eh.
05:01In fact,
05:02the biggest dating site
05:03ngayon
05:04is actually running clubs
05:05in the Philippines,
05:07siyempre in Makati.
05:08So,
05:09I've heard,
05:10no?
05:10So,
05:11yun,
05:11so maganda na
05:12pinopromote yung
05:13health and fitness,
05:14especially at this age.
05:16Si May Chila,
05:17ano to ah,
05:18very evident to ngayon.
05:20Not just,
05:21nakikita na rin natin
05:21sa basketball,
05:23na meron na rin silang
05:23mga categories
05:2440 and above.
05:26Sa tingin niyo po ba,
05:27like what you mentioned
05:29kanina na
05:29ang trend ngayon
05:30is healthy living,
05:32healthy lifestyle.
05:34Ano sa tingin niyo
05:34yung reason
05:35bakit nagkaroon tayo
05:36ng shift?
05:37As we've noticed,
05:39sabi niyo nga kanina,
05:40di ba,
05:40from dati,
05:41bars,
05:42yan ang mga sikat,
05:43ngayon,
05:44it's mga health hubs
05:46ang mas napopromote.
05:48Why this shift?
05:49I think a lot to do
05:51is,
05:51I think,
05:52social media as well.
05:53Access to social media,
05:55nakikita na natin
05:56yung mga,
05:57ibang mga idols
05:58natin on
05:59some other podcasts
06:00na
06:01before you become
06:03successful in life,
06:04I guess,
06:05in terms of business,
06:06you have to work
06:07on yourself first.
06:09So, nakikita natin
06:10na
06:10mas maatotrust mo
06:12yung taong successful
06:13in business
06:14and it goes
06:15hand in hand eh.
06:18Nakikita mo rin
06:18yung katawan nila
06:19na magaganda
06:20and they really
06:21take good care
06:21of their bodies.
06:23I guess,
06:23it's based on
06:24discipline as well.
06:25So,
06:26madaming gumagaya,
06:27madaming
06:28na-inspire
06:29sa mga ganong
06:30mga icons
06:31na napaponod natin
06:32yun sa mga podcast.
06:34O, baka
06:34nagahanap din
06:35ng tunay na
06:35pag-ibig.
06:36Diba?
06:36Sa mga,
06:37ano nga yun eh,
06:38gym,
06:39sa mga running
06:39community.
06:41So, socialization din.
06:42Yes, o naman.
06:43A big part of
06:44our personal growth,
06:45I believe,
06:46and career growth
06:47is social life.
06:48And,
06:49nakikita nila,
06:50kapag fit yung partner mo,
06:51fit yung makikilala mo,
06:52you already have
06:53something in common.
06:54Diba?
06:54So, magandang simula yun
06:56sa, I think,
06:57all kinds of relationship.
06:58I know.
06:59And also,
06:59I think,
07:00economic-wise,
07:01especially sa
07:02Dapitan area,
07:03they're very rich
07:04in history,
07:04they're very rich
07:05in culture.
07:06And now,
07:07siguro with our knees,
07:08mas mapapa-usbong din
07:10natin yung sports
07:11tulis yan.
07:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:12Hopefully,
07:13ma-promote talaga
07:14even more, no?
07:15Like I said before,
07:16there's this competition,
07:17it's called WCAF,
07:18World Escrima Cali Federation.
07:22And, nakakalungkot
07:23because 95%
07:24of the participants
07:25are actually foreigners,
07:27mostly Europeans, no?
07:29Hindi talaga
07:29sinusuportahan
07:30ng mga Pilipino.
07:32But, right now,
07:32there's a shift
07:33and a lot more
07:34Filipinos are
07:36not only
07:36into the Arnis,
07:38but to knife fighting.
07:39And, nakikita naman natin
07:41sa mga movies ngayon, no?
07:42It's very evident,
07:43like The Born Identity.
07:45All action movies
07:47right now
07:48stems from
07:49Filipino martial arts
07:51yung mga nagtitrain
07:51sa mga actors na ito.
07:53Tsaka yung real life
07:54na ano, eh,
07:55na pwede mong i-expect
07:56in a, let's say,
07:57It's a very practical,
07:58Yes, situation.
08:00Na kahit ano yung
08:00mabunot mo,
08:01bangko man yan,
08:02lapis man yan,
08:03pwede mong gamitin
08:04to protect or defend yourself.
08:05That's true.
08:06I just want to touch on
08:08doon sa sinabi nyo
08:08na meron kayong
08:10hinuhos na event
08:11and 95%
08:12eh, foreigner.
08:13Bakit sa tingin nyo
08:14mas naging popular
08:16or mas naging maganda
08:18yung reception nito
08:18sa mga foreigners?
08:20Because, I think,
08:21kakaiba siya.
08:23Like I said,
08:24nakakalungkod
08:24because we focus on
08:26Taekwondo,
08:27which is actually
08:27Korean,
08:28Karate,
08:29which is actually
08:30Japanese,
08:30Kendo,
08:31Japanese, no?
08:32Pero,
08:33one of the deadliest
08:34martial arts, no?
08:35is recognized,
08:37it's actually
08:38Filipino martial arts,
08:40Arnis,
08:40Kali,
08:41Eskrima.
08:42So,
08:44malaking bagay sa kanila
08:45to ask around
08:48kung ano ba talaga
08:49yung pinaka maganda,
08:51pinaka magaling na
08:52martial art
08:53na magagamit din
08:55ng mga Navy SEALs
08:56or yung mga Sundalo
08:57in their part of their country,
08:59which is adaptable
09:01sa Arnis
09:02and my fight.
09:03How do you plan
09:04to promote
09:05o kumbaga
09:06ipakilala sa mga tao
09:08itong sport na to?
09:10Well,
09:10by practicing
09:11and being part of it,
09:14no?
09:14Like I mentioned,
09:15no,
09:15during our event,
09:16I actually fought
09:17one,
09:19he was an Italian marine
09:21and he's an instructor
09:23of Arnis
09:23in Italy
09:24and he came home,
09:25he came here
09:26to the Philippines
09:26first time
09:27just to
09:28do a
09:30duel
09:30with me.
09:31I was then
09:32mayor of the
09:33Pitan City
09:33and napakagandang
09:35laban,
09:35no?
09:36It was very hard
09:37kasi at our age,
09:39we were still
09:39training to fight
09:41and madaming
09:42ang mga
09:43officiating teams
09:45na ka-age ko rin
09:46na nakita
09:47na siguro
09:48pwede pa pala
09:49kasi usually
09:50at this age,
09:51ay magiging
09:52referee na lang ako,
09:53ay magiging
09:53official na lang ako
09:55to try to
09:55focus on the kids.
09:57Pero when they saw
09:58our tournament,
10:00our fight,
10:01nakita nila na
10:02pwede pa pala
10:03yung mga
10:0343,
10:0444,
10:0545
10:05na lumaban
10:06and mag-participate
10:08especially in a sport
10:09which is
10:10truly ours
10:11and very Filipino.
10:13Mayor,
10:14curious lang ako,
10:15if gusto namin
10:17matuto ng Arnis,
10:18it's not too late.
10:19I mean,
10:20wala siyang Pilipinian
10:20idad
10:21to start.
10:22Wala.
10:22Unlike other sports,
10:23kanyari gymnastics,
10:24even taekwondo,
10:25you need to start young.
10:27It's all about technique
10:29and you know,
10:30Arnis is an extension
10:31of your hand.
10:32So whether it's
10:33empty hands,
10:34knife fighting,
10:35or the art of
10:36stick fighting,
10:37it's all about technique
10:39and the power
10:40of the wrist.
10:41So,
10:41maganda.
10:42There's a lot of
10:43different,
10:44what do you call this,
10:45forms of Arnis
10:46na dapat talaga
10:48pag-aralan,
10:49iba-iba.
10:50So,
10:51very interesting
10:51to learn
10:53from different
10:54Filipino.
10:54And Ms. Megma,
10:55share ko lang,
10:56kasi Arnis,
10:57fencing,
10:58yung Arnis na stick,
10:59fencing,
11:00kendo,
11:01these are very similar
11:03kumbaga when it comes
11:05to technique.
11:06Kasi,
11:06Hima,
11:07yung Renaissance
11:09martial arts
11:11na gumagamit din
11:12ng different sabers,
11:13they have swords,
11:15iba't-iba nga lang
11:15yung,
11:16ano mo sabi ko,
11:18it's the sign,
11:19I think,
11:19the saber
11:20and the foil
11:21and yung ginagamit
11:21sa fencing,
11:22pero yung technique niya,
11:23it's a very similar
11:24to Arnis.
11:25And the concept
11:26is basically
11:27just also
11:27to defend yourself
11:28lahat sila.
11:30But the Arnis
11:30and the Hima
11:31and the Krav Maga
11:32is more on
11:33defending,
11:34protecting,
11:34hindi siya,
11:35as in yung iba,
11:36hindi for sports,
11:37talagang ginagamit
11:39in real life.
11:42Ayan.
11:43Mayor,
11:43meron po ba kayong
11:44mga upcoming events
11:46na,
11:47especially dito nga
11:49sa Dakak,
11:51Dapitan,
11:52na kilala rin
11:53tourist destination.
11:55Actually,
11:56we just opened
11:57our golf course,
11:58our 18-hole golf course,
11:59and we're promoting
12:00this as well, no?
12:02I think this is one
12:02of the premier spots
12:04or destinations
12:04when it comes to
12:06golf tourism naman.
12:08Alam nyo,
12:09madayo kasing golf courses
12:10sa buong Pilipinas
12:11na medyo malayo
12:12yung mga hotels nila,
12:14yung accommodation,
12:15and it's only
12:16in this part of Mindanao,
12:17in Dakak,
12:17wherein you can
12:19actually play golf,
12:20take your golf cart
12:21and go from your room
12:23all the way to the course
12:24and go back and forth
12:26within an area.
12:28So,
12:28this is something
12:29that we're promoting.
12:30This golf course
12:32was actually designed
12:33by no less than
12:34the golf icon,
12:36parang siyang
12:37Michael Jordan
12:37ng golf,
12:38si Greg Norman
12:39or the shark.
12:41So,
12:41this is something
12:41that we should be proud of
12:43kasi this is one
12:44of the courses
12:45within our country
12:46na talagang na-design.
12:47ng icon na ito.
12:49And we'd like
12:50to invite everyone
12:51to come,
12:52if you play golf,
12:53to come and see
12:54for yourself
12:55kung ano naman nagawa
12:56and gaano ka ganda
12:57yung geography
13:00and patterns
13:02na ginawa namin
13:03sa golf course
13:04ng Dakak.
13:05Exciting yun, no?
13:06Win-win yun,
13:07kung hindi ka mag-golf,
13:08marika mag-beach,
13:09you're in the right place.
13:10Yes,
13:10heaven na parang sa'yo.
13:11It's a heavenly haven.
13:15Mayor,
13:16let's also talk about
13:18yung facility
13:19that you just opened
13:21in Siquijor.
13:22Can you tell us
13:23about this?
13:23Actually,
13:24we haven't opened yet.
13:25We're still under
13:26discussions, no?
13:28With Metcon.
13:29We have a property
13:31also in Siquijor.
13:33I'd like to say hi
13:34to Governor Jake Villia
13:37of Siquijor.
13:39It's a growing
13:40tourist destination, no?
13:42Apart from Siargao,
13:43I think DOT is focusing
13:44on Bohol,
13:46Siargao,
13:47and Siquijor.
13:48We plan to put up
13:50a sort of like
13:51a sports tourism,
13:53like a gym.
13:54They have this
13:55in Bali.
13:56It's called
13:57Bamboo Fitness, no?
13:59Wherein you,
14:00they get to experience
14:01a tropical,
14:01what a tropical gym
14:03looks like, no?
14:04And the programs
14:05that we're gonna be
14:06adding onto that
14:08is what they call
14:09a high,
14:10very popular,
14:11no, right now,
14:12it's called
14:12High Rocks.
14:13So, it's a fast-paced,
14:15high-intensity
14:16training program, no?
14:18Na pwede namin
14:20incorporate naman
14:21in these foreign
14:23visited places
14:25like Siquijor
14:26and Siargao.
14:28Very exciting din yan,
14:30yung High Rocks.
14:30Malagang,
14:31ano siya,
14:32intense.
14:32Ito ako masyadong
14:32familiar dyan.
14:33Pero it's an intense
14:34parang different
14:35workouts
14:36na gagawin mo.
14:37Tapos,
14:38may partner kayo
14:39siya,
14:39you have a partner.
14:40Parang hit,
14:40parang crossfit,
14:42pero mas,
14:42ano,
14:42mas intense.
14:43Ang kaagandahan niya,
14:44it's actually
14:45a social thing,
14:46no?
14:47Yes.
14:47By groups,
14:48kayo nalalaban
14:49and then you're
14:49timed as well.
14:50So,
14:51ang ganda ng
14:51interaction nyo
14:52with your
14:53teammates,
14:55no?
14:55And then,
14:56maganda.
14:56So,
14:56that's when you get
14:57to meet other people
14:58and parang siyang
15:00naging club,
15:01no?
15:02So,
15:02kailangan talaga
15:03condition ka.
15:04Oh,
15:04you're like,
15:06workout siya,
15:06but at the same time,
15:07may time.
15:08May time?
15:08Yes.
15:09So,
15:09you compete with
15:09your partner?
15:11No,
15:11you compete with
15:12different groups.
15:13So,
15:13team-team siya
15:14and then,
15:14may time na kailangan
15:15tapusin
15:16and there are
15:17different stages
15:18that you have to
15:19finish,
15:20no?
15:20So,
15:20kailangan mo siguro
15:21may ball,
15:23ano,
15:23may wall,
15:25wall jump,
15:26may jumping rope,
15:27may biking
15:28na kailangan mo
15:30tapusin within
15:31a certain time period.
15:32Sana maging party po kami
15:33once it is open
15:35or,
15:35you know,
15:35you've decided
15:37na para talagang
15:38i-promote siya,
15:39mapabilang kami.
15:42Yes,
15:42pwede na tayo
15:43mag-one team.
15:44Kaya,
15:45hindi lang po
15:45na muna namin
15:46magpa-condition.
15:47Oo.
15:47Pwede tayo
15:48mapahiya.
15:49Matagal-tagal na rin.
15:50And if you have
15:51any message po
15:52or may mga gusto
15:53kayong pasalamatan,
15:54i-shout out
15:55to you.
