Transcript
00:00Jordan Davis, Back to Keep Us Company, new album, Learn the Hard Way, coming out here
00:04end of August.
00:05I'm stoked.
00:06I'm really excited.
00:07I was talking to my producer.
00:08I was like, didn't we just talk to Jordan about the album?
00:10And he's like, that was February.
00:11And I was like, oh my gosh.
00:12I know.
00:12I was like thinking of this when we were, I was like, goodness gracious.
00:15It's like, I mean, this year has just flown by.
00:18Yeah.
00:18It's crazy.
00:19It's wild.
00:19Because you were telling me about working with Carly and Marcus on this album.
00:22We were like, we can't air that.
00:23I know.
00:23I couldn't even announce who it was.
00:25I know.
00:26It's so fun.
00:26Talk about naming the album, Learn the Hard Way.
00:28Yeah.
00:29And like what that meant for you.
00:31Yeah.
00:31I think this is definitely the record that went the longest without having a name.
00:39And I don't know why.
00:40I think it's just, you know, I don't know.
00:44This one was really tough to put a name on.
00:49Yeah.
00:49And, you know, I think Bluebird Days came pretty quick.
00:53And I kind of knew what I wanted to do with it.
00:54But, you know, I wanted the last record to be really kind of personal and touch on some
00:59songs that meant a lot to me.
01:02And this one was more aimed at, you know, kind of, I just wanted to get back to fun.
01:07And I wanted this record to be fun live.
01:10And I think that's one of the reasons why it took forever.
01:14But when I heard Learn the Hard Way, that was the first time I kind of saw the thread through
01:20a few of these songs about, you know, somebody missing something.
01:23Whether it be Mess with Missing You, you know, Turn This Truck Around, I Ain't Saying.
01:30And, like, it's something that, like, you can kind of go back and be like, all right, there's
01:34a common character through this album that is kind of always going back and trying to
01:38fix something that he probably should have fixed back then.
01:41And Learn the Hard Way just kind of raised its hand is that.
01:44And then personally, you know, still even with four kids and, you know, music being better
01:51than I ever would have dreamed, there's still a few things that I'm kind of having to learn
01:56the tough way.
01:57I think that as you get older, there are very few things you actually don't learn the hard
02:01way.
02:02Like, every once in a while, I'm like, oh, I'll, yeah, whatever advice you have, I will
02:05take it because I don't want to learn that lesson.
02:06Yeah.
02:06And you usually still end up having to do it anyway.
02:08Because you just get stuck in your ways.
02:09I know that's me.
02:10I get stubborn and, you know, I've kind of always been a, you know, I'll just bulldog this
02:17until I make it work.
02:18Yeah.
02:19I think, you know, the older you get, you realize that even if that does work, it's usually
02:25not the best way to go about it.
02:26So, yeah, I've had to learn a few of those myself.
02:29Bar none, the latest single, which I think is probably your fastest rising single, right?
02:34Like this song, it makes me want to drive fast in my car with the top down.
02:37Like, it's just such a fun song.
02:38Yeah, it is.
02:39I mean, it's fun to play live.
02:41It's, you know, and it's funny.
02:44I even questioned like this being the first single, you know, or after I ain't saying.
02:50But I've never, I've never been good at picking songs and like knowing which ones are going
02:55to.
02:56And I think that's the coolest thing about putting a record out.
02:59You don't have to do that anymore.
03:00You just release the song to the world and let the ones that are going to raise their
03:04hand, raise their hand.
03:06But yeah, bar none has definitely been one that, you know, and then now you look back
03:10the first time we played it out live, I get done and I see the reaction.
03:15I'm like, I'm an idiot.
03:16Do I know anything?
03:17Like, how did I not know?
03:19You know what, though?
03:19I always say, I'm like, no one knows what a hit is.
03:22And if someone tells you that they do, you should ignore whatever they say.
03:24100%.
03:25Because they don't know.
03:26Yeah.
03:26Like, I always use this as an example, but the first like 10 times I heard Dan and Shay
03:30tequila, I was like, I don't get it.
03:31Yeah.
03:32And then now I like, I'm screaming it when they play it live.
03:35And that's the, you know, I kind of lost a leg to stand on because I told some people
03:38that.
03:39And they were like, dude, this song's a hit.
03:40And I was like, all right, you're going to be the first person I call whenever it doesn't
03:44go that way.
03:45I haven't made that call yet.
03:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:46So, no, it's, I'm grateful for it.
03:49And grateful for the team to kind of, you know, um, you know, lean there, give their
03:55two cents on it and, um, talk me off of whatever song I was trying to push at the time.
04:00Exactly.
04:00I feel like you're having the busiest summer, obviously, like tour album, baby number four
04:05just arrived.
04:05Yeah.
04:06I was a little Sadie.
04:07She's great.
04:07Yeah.
04:07I mean, she is.
04:10Yeah.
04:10I mean, she's, she's perfect.
04:11I mean, honestly, like just sleeping, eating healthy, uh, you know, such a calm demeanor.
04:18Um, the kiddos are lover to death.
04:22Uh, you know, it's been mama's happy.
04:25Mommy's mama's healthy.
04:26So it's been, it's been a, it's been a blessing.
04:29I was gonna say baby number four, probably like it has to start getting like easier now.
04:33You're like, you're not so worried about everything.
04:35Yeah.
04:35And it's definitely, you know, the, the process of keeping one alive.
04:40Now we at least feel like, all right, I think we, I think we, you know, we, we figured
04:43out three, uh, but yeah, the, the, the change in, you know, getting four kids ready to go
04:51somewhere or getting four people fed and asleep before nine o'clock is, uh, it's tough.
05:00Uh, you posted a real, I think it was on Kristen's due date that you were like on your way to a
05:05show in Canada and you're like, how cooked am I?
05:07Like how cooked were you when you left the house that morning?
05:10Yeah, it was a bad one.
05:12Uh, my only saving grace on that show was it was booked so long in advance that like,
05:18and I asked her at the time.
05:20So like at the time it was like, you know, pregnant, like you're not thinking about anything.
05:24It's like, Hey, I do have a show around that due date.
05:27I'll get up there and back as fast as I can, but I need to know now if you want me to change
05:31this.
05:32And she's like, I think we'll be fine.
05:34And then like the due date starts changing and then you're like, Oh.
05:38So I had like at least a little bit of defense there.
05:41Don't get me wrong.
05:42I was still in hot water, but, uh, but yeah, it was, uh, it was, that was a Saturday.
05:49I think I got back Sunday morning.
05:51And then she arrived when I got back Sunday afternoon.
05:54I got, I landed back at two o'clock on Sunday and she got here Tuesday morning.
05:59So it wasn't super close, but yeah.
06:02Um, how you said everyone's adjusting.
06:04Well, I feel like with Eloise being like the oldest, she's probably like so excited to have
06:07a little baby in the house, a little baby girl.
06:09I mean, it's, it's like a play doll for her.
06:11I bet.
06:12Like, you know, she never wants to, it's actually tough to get me.
06:16It's tough to get her out of the house because like, you know, it's summertime and I love
06:24to take my boys fishing.
06:25So like, I always be like, Hey, we're going to take, we're going to go fish and, uh, we're
06:30going to leave mom at the house with baby Sadie.
06:32So everybody come on.
06:34And the other day my daughter just starts bawling and I was like, what is up?
06:38And she's like, I don't want to leave baby Sadie.
06:41And I was like, okay, that's fine.
06:43You can stay here.
06:45So me and the boys went and caught a bunch of bluegills on Percy and had a blast.
06:50So you guys are, she's calling her baby Sadie.
06:52Yeah.
06:52That's the cutest thing ever.
06:53And then is Eloise starting kindergarten this year?
06:55Yeah.
06:56Oh my God.
06:57Jordan.
06:57That's crazy.
06:58How are you feeling about that?
07:00It's pretty wild.
07:01And, you know, and I should have expected this, like having Jacob, my brother, um, you
07:08know, he's got three that are, I think 10, seven and six, 10, seven and five.
07:13Um, and I still remember his oldest, you know, just like being born and, you know, I saw a photo
07:20the other day and I'm like, I look the same, which I probably don't.
07:24Uh, but I was like, how is this kid 10 years old now?
07:28And, uh, so I've had like a front row seat at how fast it goes, but, um, you know, sometimes
07:34you got to learn the hard way how fast kiddos grow up.
07:37Yes, you do.
07:37It is pretty nuts that she's, you know, cause like it feels like she's starting school.
07:42Every other thing is like, yeah, it's pretty much daycare.
07:44Yeah.
07:44To where now it's like kindergarten is a totally different, like, oh my God, like this is
07:49school.
07:49Yeah.
07:50So it's pretty crazy.
07:51That's odd.
07:51What were you like in school?
07:53Not good.
07:54No.
07:54I was never like a, I don't think I was ever like a, like discipline problems, but I was
08:01just like a, I was not a great student.
08:04Yeah, definitely that.
08:06And hated studying.
08:09I always thought that I could just get by, by just doing the bare minimum.
08:14Um, some people probably say I still do that, but, uh, like, yeah, I was never like, I was
08:20never a great student.
08:21She will be, that kid is smarter than I am.
08:23Like she's going to be my firstborn daughter always.
08:26I mean, dude, it is nuts.
08:28And, and so like, I always joke about, I'm a huge office fan.
08:33So it's always like, everybody's like, oh my God, did you get three kids?
08:36Like now four kids, like, how are you going to pay for college?
08:40And I'm always like, have you met my oldest son?
08:42Like that kid ain't going to college.
08:44But, uh, that's hilarious.
08:46Yeah.
08:47Like, because it's me, like that's my, my oldest boy is me made over.
08:52That's so funny.
08:53Did you get voted anything in school?
08:54Were you like most likely to?
08:56Probably most likely to not go to college.
08:59But you did, you did, you went to college?
09:02Yeah, I did.
09:03I somehow figured it out, but, uh, no, I didn't get, I don't think I made any of those, what
09:07are those superlatives?
09:08Yeah.
09:08Something like that.
09:10See how smart I was right there?
09:12That three syllable word.
09:15No, I didn't.
09:16If, if, if I would have been voted something, it would have been that.
09:18It'd have been like class clown or something like that.
09:20I love that.
09:21But we've got Luke Bryan on the week after you.
09:23And I was curious, did you see that video this week that kind of went viral of him?
09:26I think at that like fair in North Dakota singing by dirt.
09:29No.
09:29You got to go look at this.
09:30It's like, it's, it's just, I mean, I'm sure it's like what you feel like every night singing
09:33by dirt, but I kept seeing it in my feed the other day and it just looked awesome.
09:38I also was curious, like, do you have any good Luke stories or anything that we should
09:42razz him about?
09:43Oh God.
09:44I mean, it's where to start.
09:45I'm sure.
09:46Every time I see him, I'm just giggling.
09:48Well, I thought you were going to say the video cause somebody threw like a, somebody
09:52threw like a little beach ball at him, but I heard it was like a hacky sack or it was
09:56like something like, I don't know.
09:57But I will tell you that when we talked to him the other day, they're like, don't bring
09:59up the beach ball.
10:00He's tired of talking about it.
10:01I bet.
10:01And I felt bad.
10:02Cause I was like, yeah, of course it's like the one thing we're all like, see, I hit
10:05in the face.
10:05But I think it was what to me that stood out from it is like, like, dude, you don't
10:10want to make Luke mad.
10:12And you got like a, there was like a six second, there was a six second clip of him where I
10:20was like, Oh, the first time I saw it, I was like, Oh, he's about to lose it.
10:23And, and then he like went back to being Luke, which thank God.
10:27You did.
10:28You can see him kind of trying to see like who threw it.
10:30Thank God.
10:31I would do the same thing as somebody hitting me in the face with anything.
10:33Yeah, that's a, I saw that with Kristen and I was like, dude, I don't know who threw
10:37that, but he is lucky that that dude went back to being a professional and was like, I'm gonna
10:43let that slide off my back.
10:44Right.
10:45Cause I don't think people realize like how big of a guy Luke Bryan is.
10:47Like every time I see him, like, did you get taller?
10:49It's not.
10:50Yeah.
10:50That's the thing is like, maybe you just see photos and videos.
10:53Luke is a, Luke's a big dude and it's not good to make Southern Georgia boys mad.
11:00That's not a good, that's not a good look for you.
11:02So for sure.
11:04It could have ended bad.
11:04For sure.
11:05Well, thank you for the time today.
11:06It was great to see you.
11:07The album sounds amazing.
11:09Like I said, I've been driving all over Nashville listening to Bar None with the top down screaming.
11:13So thank you very much.
11:14I appreciate it.
