Taiwan's CDC has confirmed three new cases of melioidosis and four new cases of leptospirosis since last week’s heavy rains in southern Taiwan. Both deadly infections are caused by close contact with or inhalation of contaminated water or mud.

00:09Officials say there have been three new cases of melioidosis and four new cases of leptospirosis
00:16since last week's unprecedented rainfall.
00:18Both deadly infections are caused by contact or inhalation near contaminated water or mud.
00:24Of the seven new cases, six had contact with floodwaters.
00:28The CDC is warning older adults and those with weakened immune systems to wear rain boots
00:33and masks when doing storm cleanup.
00:35This brings the total confirmed cases of melioidosis in 2025 to 35, including two deaths.
00:42It's the third highest ever for this time of year.
