New York City Mayor Eric Adams was asked about last week's deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
Transcript
00:00Hello, Mr. Mayor. How are you, Monica?
00:02I have a question. In regards to the statistics that you declared for July,
00:08what specific steps are being taken to make sure that the incident that happened last week,
00:13tragic but isolated, will not undermine those accomplishments of NYPD?
00:19And also the second question, if I may, is do you have any updates about the investigation
00:24with regards to that shooting that occurred last week?
00:27And the commissioner can respond to that.
00:30And we have been asked several times, what can we do to stop a shooting like that?
00:40Over and over again, we've been asked that question.
00:43And let's be clear what happened here.
00:45We had a deranged person who drove across the country with an automatic weapon with one intention,
00:57and that was to create death and destruction.
01:02That was his goal. That was his mission.
01:05And when you have gun laws outside our country, outside our city and state,
01:12that makes it readily and easy to possess those types of weapons,
01:18it makes cities like New York, where we don't manufacture these weapons,
01:24it makes it difficult for us.
01:27But we have stepped up to the challenge.
01:29We removed close to 23,000 illegal guns off our streets, 3,100 this year alone.
01:37But more than that, any law enforcement expert would tell you that when you have a ready, willing, and able person
01:48who wants to bring about intentional destruction,
01:50what you must do is try to prevent, but exterminate and terminate the threat as quickly as possible.
02:01That's what SRG and our other law enforcement officers did.
02:07While people were running out of the building, those officers were running in the building.
02:13While they knew there was a known shooter, and the potential that there was an incendiary device,
02:20in spite of that, they went in.
02:22They went in, did a floor-by-floor search.
02:25Routing management did what was right by creating active shooter's drills.
02:31They had a safe space in the building that doubled as a restroom.
02:36And so you saw all the pieces of civilians and law enforcement coming together to quickly terminate the threat.
02:46When you looked at the videos, you saw that this individual, he was intentional on his action.
02:53And we did what we're supposed to do.
02:56Now it's time for the federal government to step up and get these automatic weapons of this magnitude
03:01that belonged on a battlefield and not in our cities.
03:07We're going to continue to do that.
03:09Any updates on the investigation?
