00:00today i'm here at underbelly with chris turner who is uh has a show called spontaneous which is
00:12it's quite difficult to explain isn't it but it's an audience interaction show with a freestyle rap
00:17which is all completely improvised but we're not really here to talk about your show specifically
00:21today are we chris i mean much as i want to because i've just been hearing all about it
00:25it sounds fascinating but you've just had quite an exciting piece of news yes so uh i i am
00:30competing in this season of america's got talent which is a show that i assume people have heard
00:35yeah it's quite big um we have our own version here and yeah yes um yeah that was my main fear when i
00:41went on it they'd be like why not britain's got talent but um yeah i i am american now i got my
00:46american citizenship so i entered the competition and uh i i did my audition in front of simon cowell
00:53and scary spice mel b and sofia vergara and howie mandel and terry cruz don't forget terry cruz the
00:59uh absolute beefcake powerhouse uh i i got four yeses which was great but that doesn't necessarily
01:05mean you actually get through because they say yes to more acts and they can fit in the live
01:09quarterfinals and when you got here to edinburgh when you got here to fringe you had no idea this
01:14was gonna happen no they they called me uh i was walking along salisbury crags it's very picturesque
01:21actually it was a good moment they're like you're through to the live quarterfinals i can't hear
01:25you i'm so i want some crags i was the first freestyle rapper to even appear on the show
01:31in 20 years they've never had a freestyle rapper and they they they were like are you sure you want
01:37to do that are you sure you don't want to do something written or scripted i'm like no i'll make
01:42it up they were like oh well this could end terribly and that would make for great television
01:46edinburgh consider this training you know 25 shows i do six or seven wraps a show
01:51so and the wraps all based on ideas that you get from the audience it's an improvisation sort of
01:57yeah yeah they always change this show i mean there's so many different ways you can do freestyles
02:02you can you know the classic is you know oh grab some things out your bags i'll rap about those
02:06whatever you're gonna get you know the other day someone ripped off his prosthetic limb
02:09uh ripped off is probably the wrong word he removed i don't think he was like
02:13what will this mean for your career i mean you're obviously you're based in america now but you're
02:18from the uk originally yeah yeah from manchester um i live in new york now i've been there for
02:23nine years obviously simon cowell is anyone who's grown up in the uk you know simon cowell you know
02:29that he's like this roman emperor who can just make or break a career depending on whether he likes
02:34the act or not one of the reasons when people say why did you go to america like why not stay in the
02:39uk i love performing in the uk i love performing in the uk like touring is incredible here
02:44but it is much smaller a night out to watch the comedy in america is just more of a common thing
02:51than here right you know here you might go and see your favorite touring comedian in an arena
02:56and over there just going to your town's comedy club is a bit more common i think if you're watching
03:03me here in edinburgh that is never happening again even if you give the same suggestion twice
03:08yeah i'm never going to rap about it the same way because that's cheating that's brilliant so
03:13immediately after your fringe show you're flying to where where's it being filmed
03:16in los angeles los angeles yeah fantastic in a 3000 seat auditorium and are you nervous
03:23nerves are good though nerves are adrenaline and like without the nerves you can't perform without
03:29the nerves you can't do the freestyling if you're not nervous the brain isn't pumping full of
03:34brainless and finally do you hope do you think you could get all the way do you think you can win
03:40in america you have to say i know i can win this and that's what americans that's we value that
03:49confidence i think the the only factor that decides whether it's going to really like pop off or not
03:56is just like in that moment how do i do like how how comfortable am i how nervous am i how much can i
04:02nail it yeah so i think in my british mode and in my american mode i think i can win it there's not
04:07a better training ground to go into a performance like people leave here and then go and shoot a
04:11live at the apollo or go and do a tour like yeah you've got up to speed you're like already at a
04:16you know a running start so that's great well thank you so much and good luck with it all thank you
04:23very much yeah um and you know i can't say tune in and vote for me because it's on at 2 a.m in the
04:29morning and i don't think they accept calls from the united kingdom which now makes me go i can't
04:34win because oh yeah get your vpns ready definitely can't legally say that tune in legally watch
04:42responsibly
