00:00A landmark treaty on plastic pollution is expected on Tuesday, as a crisis affects every ecosystem and person on the planet.
00:09Currently, there is a split over whether the treaty should require cutting plastic production.
00:14About 100 countries want to limit production, as well as tackle cleanup and recycling.
00:20Many have said it is essential to address toxic chemicals.
00:24Plastic pollution is really driving what we call the triple planetary crisis.
00:28It's accelerating climate change, biodiversity, loss, and polluting every corner of our planet.
00:35Talks last year in South Korea were supposed to be the final round, but they adjourn in December at an impasse of a cutting production.
00:44Every year, the world makes more than 400 million tons of new plastic, and that could grow by about 70 percent by 2040 without policy change.
00:52Generally, I'm really outraged about what they see in our open environment in terms of plastic pollution.
00:57And, of course, we also know that it's in our blood and in our bodies and not just, just, quote unquote, in nature and ocean.
01:07So people want solutions, and that's why this matters.
01:11About 80 government ministers are attending the talks that will last 10 days, the longest session yet, with an adjournment schedule for August 14.
01:23For any proposal to make it into the treaty, every nation must agree.
01:27Let's pray.
01:49Let's pray.
01:50Let's pray.
