Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the funniest golf scenes
00:10in movies with a rule of no more than one scene per film.
00:1920.
00:23Bond's Trickery – Goldfinger
00:29While comedy might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the James
00:32Bond franchise, the films have had their fair share of comedic moments.
00:36In Goldfinger, for example, the golf scene shows just how cunning Sean Connery's Bond
00:40can be.
00:41Goldfinger's cheating tactics help put Bond on the brink of defeat, but not so fast.
00:54Bond pulls a switcheroo.
00:56Wonder doesn't notice and we're left chuckling as Agent 007's trickery pays off at the 18th
01:02hole.
01:03What's the lesson here?
01:04Don't cheat the game.
01:05And don't mess with James Bond.
01:0719.
01:20The Boys Are Back in Town – Navy Seals
01:29While Mayday's missiles and military missions are the main features of this action film,
01:34we also get a taste of comedic golf.
01:36There's something amusing about the song choice of The Boys Are Back in Town to accompany
01:40a scene where the Navy Seals are doing such an ordinary human activity.
01:44Beyond pinging a golf ball baseball style at a golf cart after being hit on the butt with
01:48a club isn't something you'll usually see on the course.
01:51It's sure worth a laugh as for the kneeling billiard style shot.
01:55We don't know what that's all about.
01:58Some of these guys don't even play by the rules.
02:1418.
02:15Feds on the Fairway – Casino
02:21Joe Pesci's character Nikki's reaction to a plane getting ready to land on the golf
02:25course is everything.
02:27For a small plane like that, the fairway actually seems like a plausible place to land.
02:31But come on!
02:32This is a golf course.
02:34Once he realizes they're federal agents, it starts to make some sense.
02:3718.
02:38The feds were watching Nikki play golf for so long they ran out of gas.
02:43Just what I needed.
02:44Right in front of the control board.
02:4518.
02:46We're left waiting with anticipation to see what happens next.
02:49And in comical Joe Pesci fashion, he challenges his fellow golfers to try to hit the plane.
02:54For a movie with multiple intense and dramatic scenes, this gives us a much lighter moment.
03:0117.
03:04The Addams Family
03:09So, a kid's playing around with a ball and breaks a window by accident.
03:13That's far from unheard of.
03:14But, Gomez Addams is an adult.
03:17First of all, we get a kick out of things serving as the golf tee in this scene from the 1991
03:21The Addams Family film.
03:28The film technique of closely following the golf ball as it spins through the air is spot
03:33on, perfectly teeing up the impending hilarity.
03:36That's when the ball breaks the neighbor's window and lands in his cereal just as he's
03:40taking a bite.
03:41Let's just say, his face takes the brunt of it.
03:44That's a bowling one.
03:4816.
03:51The Ultra Cool Caddy, Starsky & Hutch
03:54Mr. Casual, so nice of you to join us.
03:58Snoop Dogg as a caddy?
04:00Count us in.
04:01He carries those clubs in style just as you'd expect.
04:04Vince Vaughn's character, Feldman's way of ridiculing Snoop's character, Huggy Bear,
04:11is definitely uncalled for.
04:13But it makes us chuckle.
04:15While secretly doing some detective work for Starsky & Hutch, Huggy shuts Feldman up by proving
04:26he knows a thing or two about grass.
04:41He could be a professional caddy.
04:43After the textbook caddy in sight pays off, Feldman has a pretty darn funny reaction to
04:48Huggy getting super close to him.
04:53Those two have some real on-screen chemistry.
04:5915.
05:00Dissecting Marriage at the Driving Range, The Departed
05:10The slow pace and leiserness of golf make the course, or driving range, a good place for
05:15deep, meaningful conversation.
05:16The exchange between Matt Damon Sullivan and Alec Baldwin's Ellerbee and The Departed puts
05:21that on full display in an utterly comedic way.
05:24The rather unconventional and vulgar way in which Ellerbee expresses his views on marriage
05:28really lands well thanks to Baldwin's brilliant delivery and facial expressions.
05:32Every guy seems more stable.
05:33People see the ring, they think at least somebody can stand this out of a .
05:36And it's Damon's acting chops that allow him to bounce off of it perfectly with a simple,
05:41yet comical response.
05:42We could watch these two chop it up on the driving range all day.
05:4614.
05:47Golfing with Grandpa, Dirty Grandpa
05:49When Grandpa and grandson pull up to the golf course in his comedy film, the former is
06:02looking for more than just a golf game.
06:04He's come to spit game.
06:06Of course he does.
06:07Dirty Grandpa is constantly thinking about women and sex in this movie.
06:10And he's very open and vulgar about it too, leading to many comical scenes.
06:23In this golf scene, Robert De Niro's character pulls out smooth-talking pick-up lines and
06:27even gets touchy-feely with the woman.
06:29After he then hurls his golf club at his grandson, played by Zac Efron, we can't help
06:33but crack up.
06:40The scene only gets funnier when the two get in an explicit argument after the two women
06:44leave.
06:4513.
06:46Breaking Clubs, Tent Cup
06:52What happens when a golfer and his caddy vehemently disagree?
06:57Well, we'd like to think it'd be a bit more civilized than what we see in the movie
07:02Tin Cup.
07:03Kevin Costner's character wants to play it risky, but his caddy, played by Cheech Marin,
07:07thinks he should play it safe.
07:08We'll let you be the judge.
07:17The debate about which club to use goes to another level when the two start breaking clubs,
07:22until there's only one left.
07:24At least there's still the 7-iron.
07:26We get a kick out of it, and a comment by Dennis Berkley's character Earl during the
07:30outburst gives us yet another reason to laugh.
07:3812.
07:39The Golf Course Stand Off, Sideways
07:45First of all, we wouldn't call the shot by Paul Giamatti's character Miles in a scene
07:49nice, as Thomas Hayden Church's character Jack puts it.
07:52But soon after that is where things really get funny.
07:55Jack just won't shut up.
07:57Can't you see that man is about to swing?
07:59Get it reviewed, get it in libraries.
08:02Let the public decide.
08:04Does he not know golf etiquette?
08:06Eventually Miles has had enough and reams out Jack, and the way he does it is legendary.
08:12Shut up, shut up, shut up!
08:15Jesus Christ man, what the hell is wrong with you?
08:17Please, just shut up!
08:19Meanwhile, some other guys on the course are getting impatient, and Miles' reaction is absolutely
08:25hilarious.
08:26What a shot!
08:27Jack Offs.
08:28What the hell are you doing?
08:29Oops!
08:30Look out!
08:31See what happens when you're quiet Jack?
08:32And then, well, Jack rather unusually lurches towards the angry guy's golf cart.
08:45What a way to cap off the scene.
08:47Number 11.
08:48Hitting balls with side effects.
08:50Old dogs.
08:59Robin Williams is at the heart of this golden comedy scene.
09:02After some prescriptions get mixed up, his character Dan starts to experience some serious
09:06side effects.
09:07He's got a business meeting on the golf course which starts off on the wrong foot.
09:11Clearly his hand-eye coordination and depth perception are all whacked out.
09:19Why is he driving that golf cart?
09:21After a swing and a miss, Dan makes contact but in the wrong direction.
09:25And Seth Green's character Craig is on the unfortunate but also hilarious end of it.
09:39Green makes us burst out laughing with his groan, crouch, and facial expression.
09:43Dan isn't done there either.
09:45One more crotch shot and the luckiest shot you'll ever see gives us even more to laugh
09:49about.
09:58The golf guards look favorably upon you.
10:01Number 10.
10:02The Golf Cart Explosion.
10:03Undercover Brother.
10:04I'm gonna report to the Chief.
10:06Find out what he wants us to do.
10:07That cat will be long gone by the time you get in touch with the Chief.
10:10This thing's going down now, baby.
10:11This is strictly an observational mission.
10:13We are not authorized to take action.
10:15There are certain rules of etiquette to abide by when playing golf.
10:19You mustn't speak during someone's backswing, you must replace your divots, and you mustn't
10:24race away from court security in a golf cart.
10:26That last one proves to be a real problem in this scene as the eponymous undercover brother
10:31played by Eddie Griffin makes the water hazard look positively welcoming.
10:35Attacking his adversaries with a bunch of T's, he sparks a will-they-won't-they slide
10:39towards certain death and an explosion that'll put Tiger Woods off his putt.
10:43Number 9.
10:44The Disgruntal Grandpa.
10:45The Sweetest Thing.
10:46Come on.
10:47How much time we got?
10:48We've got like three hours before the rehearsal.
10:49Hit the ball.
10:50At the driving range, there are two types of people.
11:08Those working hard on their game, and those trying to hit the ball collecting cart.
11:12The two guys in this clip are definitely in the latter category.
11:15With beers in hand, these bros live out many guys' ideal day, hitting golf balls, talking
11:20about women, and having a lightsaber fight.
11:29If you can score a few direct hits on the ball harvester as well, then you're onto a
11:33real winner.
11:34It's Grandpa who steals this scene in the end though.
11:38Poor Poor Grandma.
11:39I bet you really miss Grandma, huh?
11:43Aw, f*** Grandma.
11:44Huh?
11:45It's Pearl I'm talking about.
11:47She was the love of my life.
11:50Don't ever let these moments pass you by.
11:54Number 8.
11:55Matt Dillon vs. Cameron Diaz.
11:57There's Something About Mary.
11:58Do you want to give me some pointers here?
12:00Yeah, sure.
12:01Don't talk in someone's back.
12:05We at WatchMojo would like to elongate this movie's title a little.
12:08Because in this scene, there's something about Mary's swing.
12:12And by something, we mean something really good.
12:15Nice swing.
12:17Cameron Diaz's character may not look much like a golfer, but she can clearly play.
12:22Much to Matt Dillon's bemusement and to our amusement.
12:25Dillon's character could definitely use a few pointers, that's for sure.
12:29The private investigator smooths over the cracks with some silver tongue conversation after
12:33things start off a bit rocky.
12:35Or not.
12:36Hobbies don't come any more hilariously awkward than this.
12:38So what's your name?
12:39Pat Healy.
12:40Want to know mine?
12:41I already know it, Mary.
12:42How'd you know that?
12:43It's right there in your golf bag.
12:45Number 7.
12:46Michael Jordan Swaps Sports.
12:47Space Jam.
12:48You can do this.
12:49Don't be nervous.
12:50Don't be nervous.
12:51You can do this.
12:52Hilarity abounds when 90's NBA stars Michael Jordan and Larry Bird tee off alongside Bill
12:57Murray while an ever-excitable Wayne Knight encourages from the sidelines.
13:01Murray starts by conversing with golf balls and then underestimates basketball to two of
13:19the game's best players.
13:32Then, when MJ's ball goes bonkers, Murray drives it all home with a killer line.
13:40The overall concept of a golf ball circling the green until it reaches the cup because
13:44of an animated underground magnet is hilarious.
13:47His airness then getting sucked into an animated world through the golf hole is just unexpected.
13:53And you think this is good?
13:54Just take the picture.
13:55Alright, okay.
14:06What kind of cameras have?
14:07Number 6.
14:08Taking it slow.
14:09I love you, man.
14:10Oh, my God.
14:11Whoa.
14:12Wow.
14:13Somi, that was a great shot.
14:15Great shot.
14:16Ah, the dreaded air shot.
14:18A nightmare for anybody standing over it and seriously annoying for anybody waiting to
14:23play.
14:24In this scene, Paul Rudd's character Peter and his fiance Zoe, played by Rashida Jones, embarks
14:28on a golf double date with celebrated singleton Jason Segel, whose playing partner is in need
14:33of some serious practice.
14:35She does manage a clean hit at least once, however.
14:42Only she almost snaps Segel's leg in half in the process.
14:46One cavalcade of cuss words later and we're laughing like there's no tomorrow.
14:51Number 5.
14:52Driving Through the Driving Range.
14:53Get Smart
14:54If there's one place in the world where it really isn't safe to drive, it's on the wrong
15:04end of the driving range.
15:05Regardless, that's where Steve Carell is headed in this clip.
15:08He's seemingly entirely unfazed by the golf balls embedded in his driver's side window,
15:13but the same cannot be said for Alan Arkin.
15:15Now I know how you must have felt when you thought I was a traitor.
15:18It is demoralizing.
15:19Tractor!
15:20Arkin likely never looked at sand traps in the same way again, nor swordfish for that
15:27matter.
15:28In fact, when it comes to driving, whether a car or a golf ball, he probably passed.
15:33Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
15:34I don't know.
15:35Were you thinking, holy sh**, holy sh**, a swordfish almost went through my head?
15:39If so, yes.
15:41Number 4.
15:42Golfing on Goofballs.
15:44When Owen Wilson's Rick and Jason Sudeikis Fred embark on a wifery weekend hall pass,
15:54they're determined to recapture their glory days.
15:56How, you ask?
15:57Well, by getting drunk, getting girls, and in this scene, getting ridiculously high as
16:03they and their friends head for the fairways.
16:05Golf may be a gentleman's game, but not when these dudes get through with it.
16:23Their hilarious, inappropriate antics are enough to turn the sand pits brown.
16:27Seriously.
16:28Come on, man.
16:29We wonder what their scores ended up being.
16:31Based on what we see, probably incomplete.
16:34Number 3.
16:36Golf Course Air Horn.
16:38Jackass the Movie.
16:39Why talk through someone's backswing when you can systematically sabotage it with an air horn?
16:56At least that's the jackass way of looking at things.
16:59In this skit, Johnny Knoxville and company hide out in the trees and do their damnness to ruin people's rounds.
17:05That's one way to spend the day out on the links.
17:11The victim's initial confusion turns to frustration, which in turn turns to anger.
17:16But our air horn heroes can see nothing but the funny side.
17:19It's less PGA and more LOL, a timeless golfing gag.
17:24Number 2.
17:28Cinderella Story Caddyshack.
17:41While this iconic golf comedy is full of awesome moments, few can touch the Cinderella story monologue.
17:46Bill Murray narrates himself, pretending he's at the Masters and swinging his clubs at, not golf balls, but flowers.
17:53Through this hilarious scene, which was almost entirely improvised, he exudes the energy of a kid in his backyard who has a dream of becoming a professional athlete.
18:02He's got a beautiful backswing.
18:04Oh, he got all of that one.
18:06He's got to be pleased with that.
18:09The crowd is just on its feet here.
18:11He's a Cinderella boy.
18:13Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he lines up this last shot.
18:17He's got about 195 yards left.
18:19Looks like he's got about an 800.
18:22But come on, Carl, not the flowers.
18:25The culmination of this Cinderella story, of course, ends with him hitting the imaginary ball in the imaginary hole.
18:30From greenskeeper to Masters champion, can you believe it?
18:34We'll never forget this Cinderella story.
18:36It looks like I'm a wreck.
18:37It's in the hole!

18:54Number 1. Brutal Bob Barker. Happy Gilmore.
18:58That guy's driving me crazy.
19:00You know what's driving me crazy?
19:02You not getting the ball in the hole.
19:04Don't push me, Bob. Now's not the time.
19:06What do you get when you cross a legendary game show host with Adam Sandler in a golf course?
19:11A whole lot of hilarious, unexpected aggression, of course.
19:14We might have selected Happy Gilmore's brilliant ball rage as our clubhouse leader, but instead we've gone with Barker, fearing that he'll beat us up otherwise.
19:22Playing his part in a pro-am tournament, there's no doubt that Barker's drawn the shortest straw with Gilmore.
19:45But did anyone see this coming? It's less the Price is Right and more the Price is Fight, and we absolutely love it.
19:52The Price is Wrong, b****.
19:54Of course, every legend has to start or restart somewhere, which is what makes Happy's baby steps back into the world of golf so hilarious, and for Happy, deeply cringeworthy.
