00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let them do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera they said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes well into reality
01:03today the team are taking on a garden that's seen better days in Luton I'm Lewis I'm Dorian and this
01:22is Nyla we've lived in this house for about eight months family started to expand or continued to
01:29expand and we just felt we needed more space very much a dream home very much a forever home for us
01:35it's got a lot of things that we can do to it and the garden is huge lots of space for the kids this
01:41is our garden at the moment bits are quite overgrown it's a little bit wild before they moved in Lois
01:49in Dorian's garden had been left unkempt for years it feels quite disorganized a bit chaotic and not
01:57functional they have a half acre plot made of separate areas including a now overgrown formal
02:04lawn and an allotment space with an old greenhouse and established trees the garden no longer reflects
02:11its famous past life it was celebrated on gardeners world along with previous owner Dana Johnson it's
02:19thirsty and hungry like my family this garden has a huge kind of history the previous owner Dana had
02:28won southeast gardener of the year we've seen videos and we've seen pictures of it in its heyday and it
02:32was absolutely meticulous like the grass looked like carpet everything was just picture perfect so it's a
02:39real puzzle and I don't really know where to start with it so I find it daunting I wouldn't call it
02:44daunting I think it's inspirational I think just recognizing what it was so these are our three
02:53apple trees which look like about five or six because they're so massively overgrown and they've
02:58grown up they've grown out they've grown down they're not on this side grown up they've grown out they've
03:04grown down they're not on this side so these used to be so these used to be like a lot of beds they used to be a lot of
03:15fruit and vegetable growing here but as you can see everything's just massively overgrown at the moment
03:21there's these metal bits that are kind of really sharp and sticking out and they're really like unsafe so I worry about the kids
03:27it's kind of coming into this area and playing
03:33it's going through to the next section
03:35so this is our greenhouse and we've repaired the glass but we're still not using it it's still not perfectly functional the gutters a bit broken and inside as you can see there's not much there
03:49there's Lois and Dorian and their little kiddies so that's the garden whoa it's quite big actually
03:55isn't it yeah it's got a lovely layout to it I can't believe it was featured on gardener's world in the 80s I was still at school then I wasn't even born I am going off you
04:13it's not gardeners world ready now is it I mean it's been a long time since it's been touched and I think it could look beautiful so there's some lovely fruit trees
04:23yeah there are some nice trees but look at the rest of it the fence is falling down the greenhouse is smashed I mean it needs a lot of love
04:31a lot of TLC I have to say
04:36right let's see what Lois and Dorian want then
04:39yeah let's find out
04:41so what we'd love from this garden is to restore it to its former glory and just honour what was once here
04:46I'm so pleased that they don't want modern clean cut because I was thinking what do you do with that
04:52yeah there's a lot going on in that garden and a lot of existing trees to work with so that would be difficult
04:56yeah but make it eco-friendly and child friendly family friendly as well I think it's really important
05:02to try and get the sort of allotment area to show the kids you know where food comes from
05:09oh well that's nice all veg and fruit I think it's important that you know the kids learn about ecosystem
05:16and so that the plants attract pollinators to help pollinate the plants and make the fruits grow
05:22exactly and what I really love is that it's all about teaching the kids where their food comes from
05:26yeah fantastic
05:28one other thing that I would really love in this space is a place to relax and something that also fits with the wider garden
05:34so what's the budget
05:36I'm not going to like this Charlie it's really tight
05:39it's only 4k
05:41£4,000 it's a big garden and there's a lot to do
05:44I think it's all about focusing those pennies in the right areas so we can deliver the food to teach the kids where it's come from
05:50a nice seating area and then work with that existing garden
05:53woo wee
06:01to get the most for their £4,000 budget
06:04Charlie and Chris will be focusing their design on the old allotment area in Dorian and Lois's garden
06:11the couple must pick the one they prefer and the losing designer must help the winner build it
06:17along with an expert team of landscapers who provide their labour for free
06:22which leaves the full budget for materials
06:30Back in Luton, Lois and Dorian have received the designers' pitches
06:34Lois, Dorian what a fantastic garden you've got
06:41I can see why you want to renovate it
06:44faded glory but I want to rejuvenate it and give you a space that's great for the family
06:50great for wildlife and also produces lots of yummy things
06:55I like the sound of that
06:57me too
06:58we want to restore this garden to its former glory
07:01but you're also a family you have young children
07:04and you need a space where you can all come together
07:07yes
07:08I want to do this patio area here as well to pick up
07:12some of the paving and mix it up with some
07:15reclaimed slabs and maybe some bricks and some stone
07:19and then we've got this simple pergola that runs up and over the paving
07:24that frames a view down the garden for growing climbers
07:29we've got grapevine where you can use the leaves
07:32you can use the fruit
07:34that's a good idea
07:36Charlie's design encloses the family with a pergola, climbing plants and patio
07:41in the centre of the new allotment space
07:44whilst Chris has created a different central point
07:48now this is going to be the main family social space
07:51and I'm going to do that by reclaiming what was a former bed
07:55but it's now going to become paving with gravel around the edges
07:58and these beautiful round posts with rope swags hanging between them
08:01which will be great for climbers
08:03really nice idea
08:04yeah never seen that before
08:06this is where we go from the social zone into the more productive zone
08:09this part here I think is going to be really fun for the kids
08:13I wanted to give them their very own raised beds
08:16but I wanted to make them a vertical growing archway
08:19where they can have beans and gourds and squashes growing up over this
08:23and what's great about it is that you can actually walk around them
08:27but you can also walk underneath it and see the plants growing overhead
08:31I think it's a really cool design idea
08:33well the kids would love to see that
08:35and I wanted to create an area that's a bit magical for the children
08:39so we've got this raised bed here, sleeper high
08:42and we're going to mound the soil up
08:45and create these two seating areas
08:48with these sections of tree trunks as a pathway through
08:53oh that's quite interesting
08:54yeah I think the kids will love like jumping and leaping on those logs
08:58we're going to have a seat made from recycled materials
09:03bug hotel
09:05and then we've got meadow
09:07so when you're sat on the bench you'll be surrounded by all these meadow plants and flowers
09:13but also a great space for your children to plant some bulbs and get involved with gardening
09:19that'll be very cool
09:21making their new patch a perfect place for the children is important to Lois and Dorian
09:27as is bringing the old greenhouse back to life
09:31further down to the end of the garden
09:34I know it was really important for you to get that greenhouse back up and running
09:38what I'd like to do is get you some new things in there
09:41so you can actually start growing again
09:43get you growing vertically as well
09:45but I've got a few sneaky ideas for that
09:47so leave it with me
09:48I wonder what that's going to be
09:50and what I want to do is revamp that greenhouse
09:53a great space for growing things bringing on seedlings
09:58and also for growing things that might need a little bit more heat and protection
10:02at the beginning of the year
10:04so if you want to grow sweet potatoes and chilli plants and tomatoes
10:09then they'll need that protection to get them going
10:12that would be great
10:13definitely
10:14I think this is going to be a huge transformation for this space
10:17and I think it's going to be something you'll really enjoy together as a family
10:20I'd love to see this one built
10:22wow
10:24lots of things to think about
10:26definitely
10:27yeah really cool design
10:28not what I could have imagined or pictured at all
10:30so I'm hoping you like my design
10:32there's a little bit of everything for everyone
10:35lots of recycling
10:37lots of fruit and veg
10:39but also a nice place to explore and sit out as a family
10:44wow
10:45that's amazing
10:46that's quite a good one
10:47they're so different
10:48yeah it's going to be tough to choose between them
10:55Dorian, Lois and Nyla must now decide on their favourite design
11:00so I really love both of the designs actually
11:02yeah they're both really nice
11:03but I'll start with Charlie's design
11:05I mean what I really love is just the different heights
11:08and how she's played with the landscape
11:10yeah I like the idea of you know
11:12the kid zone
11:13the mixed space
11:14the kid zone
11:15yeah I love the bug hotel
11:16I think the kids will really enjoy that
11:18Chris's design is really great
11:19I love the nice open social space area that he's put in there
11:23and the vertical growing area just outside the greenhouse
11:26I really like this plateau area
11:28so Nyla
11:29can you see all the trees
11:30wow
11:31what do you like here
11:32do you like all the trees
11:33I don't know
11:36they're just both so different
11:37yeah they both smashed the brief
11:38yeah
11:46right
11:47Lois and Dorian have come back to us with a result
11:49shall we see who's on it then
11:50go on
11:51hi Chris
11:53hi Charlie
11:54first of all thank you both so much for such a great design
11:57I'll start with Chris's design
11:59you know I really loved your ideas about the social space
12:02and how you'd make that sort of work for our family
12:05and Charlie what we loved about your design was this idea of using reclaimed materials
12:09to add texture and variation to the flooring
12:11well we had to use reclaimed materials to make the budget go further
12:15we like a bit of that
12:17yeah
12:18we had a really difficult decision
12:19both designs were absolutely fantastic
12:21and they really considered kind of both of what we wanted our needs as a family
12:25but on balance we decided to go with
12:28oh
12:29who is it
12:30Charlie
12:32we really like the openness and the flow and that we can kind of just walk through and
12:40navigate really easily through the garden so overall we're really really happy with this design
12:44Chris
12:45oh my
12:46there we go Charlie
12:47I think we've got a bit of a challenge on here
12:49yeah
12:50I definitely need your help because it's going to be a slog
12:54yeah
12:56with just two days to rescue the forgotten allotment part of Lois and Dorian's garden
13:05project manager Ben and an elite team of landscapers are en route to Luton
13:10we have a bit of a wilderness here we've got to strip it all back and we've got to create this garden for Lois and Dorian
13:21first thing we need to do let's get the digger in hopefully it goes through the archway
13:26we're going to strip back from the greenhouse work backwards get everything in the skip and then we start putting Charlie's plan to action
13:31so let's crack on with it yeah let's get it done
13:38using a micro digger ideal for tight access
13:43bottom track bottom track
13:46how exciting
13:50Andy's first job is to clear a weed ridden top layer of turf in the old allotment area
13:56so Andy's now starting to clear the area
14:00the area we're trying to keep as much as we can so we can reuse it and still keep it in the garden
14:06the soil once we sit through it it will be reused as a soil is beautiful
14:15the team is striving to recycle as much as they can
14:21these paths running through the gardens are all coming up
14:24and I've pulled them up and it's beautiful old gritstone
14:28quite a soft rock quite a porous rock
14:31you can cut it well you can carve it well
14:34and it looks beautiful
14:36so definitely use those
14:39Charlie's design for this space puts reclaimed materials front and centre
14:44from buried paving to disregarded wood
14:46you've got some lovely stuff here Ben where you had all this from
14:50it's beautiful yeah
14:52locally to me I have a saw mills
14:54you get all these beautiful offcuts
14:56they can't sell them but they're perfect for Charlie's garden here
14:59and it comes with its own wildlife
15:01it does yeah bug hotel fitted already
15:04here we go last one
15:07amazing thank you
15:08the offcuts will be used to encourage wildlife to areas of the garden
15:14while Lee's got more woodwork to create
15:17in the form of framing for a raised patio close to the garden entrance
15:25Lee's cutting the sleepers so we create the right angles
15:28we have Andy putting the membrane down
15:30so we can create the base ready for the paving to go in
15:34once the sleepers are placed and fixed
15:36the team put a membrane in
15:38and whack the gravel ready for a new patio
15:44well look at these Lee
15:46you had to the floor alright didn't you?
15:49no it's just easy
15:52it's just amazing
15:53Lee focuses on the woodwork for the raised beds
15:56that'll be positioned in front of the greenhouse
15:59how are you getting off?
16:00well it's coming together now
16:01I lost one of the ones for down the bottom of the garden
16:03so we'll get these in then we can concentrate on this
16:07framework that we've got to build over
16:09the arch yeah we're nearly ready for you in there if that's okay
16:12yeah yeah ten minutes mate and I'll be done
16:14before the framework can be placed
16:16the patio needs putting down
16:18so if you're paving up to timber never pave right up to it so it's touching
16:32because timber can swell in the winter shrink in the summer
16:35so it'll move your slabs so leave a ten mil gap and it allows it to move
16:47using a mix of stones to create texture in this family space
16:51a pergola will sit across the paving to house climbers and planting
16:55right so this is the beginning of the archway we're putting in
17:02so I'm going to get this in place so at least I'm going to hold Andy up when he comes to start cutting around it
17:10bang on eh
17:12just going to screw it to the sleepers
17:15then I'll put some concrete in the hole and get it firmed in properly
17:22with the patio pergola posts and raised beds ready
17:27today has been hot and hard work for the landscapers
17:31hopefully they'll have cooled down by the time Charlie and Chris arrive in the morning
17:37well Chris
17:41this one's going to be a bit different for us
17:44I think it's going to be very different for us Charlie
17:46this garden really really has grown
17:49yes so we're going to be trying to just create a little oasis
17:53a little patio with all these mature plants around it
17:56a little space and then Lois and Dorian can slowly progress with the rest of the garden
18:01well it sounds lovely but sometimes all those mature plants
18:03you say that now there's a challenge love challenge love
18:09I said it was going to be a challenge
18:14wow I mean it must have been an absolutely beautiful garden
18:18but the guys have done an amazing job from what it was it was so forgotten about wasn't it this little corner
18:24yeah and I mean reusing all those materials which is great
18:28we love that
18:29lots of work to do so I'd love you to get on the pergola
18:33yeah I'm going to go and check out the wildlife zone and the veg
18:37yeah okay all right
18:39I'll have a think about the pergola
18:41good luck
18:43now when you move into a new house and it's all overgrown people panic and think
18:48just get a digger in rip everything out
18:50don't do that live with the garden for at least a year and okay maybe prune things back a bit and do a bit of weeding
18:58but you will discover things in the garden
19:01some terrible things
19:03perennial weeds
19:05to get on top of that it's going to be digging out the weeds maybe put carpet over the top to suppress the weeds and leave it for a good year
19:11and that will get rid of those perennial weeds
19:15but on the flip side you're going to discover wonderful things like these lovely mature apple trees
19:21we've got jasmine and the clematis and then we've got Sicilian honey garlic here which is a bulb
19:28so if you've got a digger in just scraped all the soil off
19:31you don't know whether there's bulbs in there or not because they might not be in growth
19:35so live with the garden
19:37mark things and then also living with the garden you discover how you actually use the garden
19:43Charlie's design combines new ideas with old materials and mature plants
19:49Charlie's taking on the apple tree pruning
19:51so when you come to pruning things and cutting things back cut to a joint just above the joint
19:59and it cuts through nice and easily
20:01if you've got bits of wood that are thicker so this sort of thickness
20:06you would use a loppers
20:08so that you can cut them off easily like that
20:12oh sorry
20:15no I'm alright
20:17below the newly pruned apple tree Andy's worked out a design to bring new life to the thick stones unearthed yesterday
20:29this is looking beautiful
20:31we're getting there aren't we?
20:33and this is all from the path still
20:35these are all bits what I pulled out of this old path yeah
20:38beautiful this one next?
20:40yeah I think if you paint him up I'll get some cement in
20:42yeah
20:46Chris is helping Lee with a pergola roof designed to encourage climbers
20:51now Lee has made this beautiful chunky pergola for Charlie to go over the seating area
20:57and what I really like about it is because it's getting nestled into all this mature planting
21:02it looks like something that is meant to be there and has been there for a long time
21:05but now we've got the challenge of lifting this beast up don't we?
21:09yeah
21:11oh watch out here we go
21:12you ready?
21:15the long and chunky roof will also create dappled sunlight across the centre of the patio
21:24I actually can't see from here can you see that Lee?
21:27it's only just about bang on
21:34beautiful
21:35I can do my monkey bars on it
21:39will you turn me off?
21:41I'll turn you off
21:42I'll have a mad dad moment
21:46with the pergola roof in place there is more woodwork that needs installing
21:51the team move on to the frames for raised beds that Charlie wants placed in front of Lois and Dorian's greenhouse
21:57okay and obviously we're going to want to level these up
22:01level these up yeah level this one up
22:03now what I'm thinking now so if that's there so that's going to be the raised bed then we've got the path
22:08yeah then we've got to get the other one in
22:10up there yeah
22:11up there then we're going to have a screen across here to screen that
22:15yeah grow runner beans up it or whatever
22:17lovely
22:18and then depending on height we could put a piece of timber across there and it would be a nice little
22:22bench
22:23it would be perfect
22:24yeah
22:26Charlie's design keeps Lois and Dorian's children in mind with another seating area by the raised patio
22:33so Lee's back at his workbench ready to create two bespoke seats
22:39so what are you thinking then?
22:41I'm thinking making two little seats
22:45so cute
22:47different sizes
22:49and we could set them at different heights
22:51yeah because the kids are at different heights
22:53yeah so a low one and a high one
22:56yeah
23:02Lee is crafting square seats from reclaimed offcuts using long timber planks as backrests
23:13Charlie's unique seating area will create an inspiring space for Lois and Dorian's three children
23:21now this is my turn to get a little bit artistic
23:24I'm going to use these gorgeous bits of gnarly logs to act as a collar around some plants and it will just stop the meadow turf from swamping the plants and it just looks arty and of course it's great for bugs and things because you've got this old rotten wood in the centre
23:44these wood offcuts create a rustic path
23:55does that look sort of levelish Todd
24:02whoo that's posh
24:06lovely
24:07lovely
24:09so that's the one that's the job
24:19now we're at quite a fun bit of this section of the garden
24:22it's time to get the slats on
24:24and the whole idea with these is that it's just going to screen the greenhouse behind
24:28because this is more of a working end of the garden
24:29whereas this is more about ornamentals of fun and a beautiful space for the family to enjoy
24:36and this is something that's really easy for anybody to replicate at home because all it is a couple of posts
24:42some nice plain rounded off button and then we're going to repeat them all the way up the posts and just use a little spacer as we go
24:50so this is something that anybody can do
24:51right come on then Menti let's start getting these in
25:07looking good looking good
25:09so this area is coming together now so this is all about wildlife and insects so we're going to have meadow turf which is going to be great because you get lots of different butterflies and moths and things like that which will then also help with the pollination and bees the pollination of the veg but great for the children so seats over there and putting in this
25:37basically this big bucket which is going to be a big bird bath and then this is going to be a bird table so we found this bit of metal I think it's cast iron it's very heavy but I want it so I get Lee to cut me a hole in there because I want it so that they can lift it off and scrub it down occasionally that way there's less chance of disease spreading between the birds
25:59the birds
26:00right
26:01right
26:02woohoo
26:11to bring the screen and raised bed area together in the growing space Chris needs to create a bench seat
26:18so I'm just measuring up and cutting two short bits of sleeper that I'm going to use to form the bench that goes just under the screen I've just built
26:27and this again is really simple construction to be honest but it's going to give you a really solid chunky bench that's going to last a long time I'll get these cut and I'll get them in
26:40Chris can install them in the growing space that sold Charlie's design to Lois and Dorian
26:46for me the most the thing I'm looking forward to the most is just growing fresh produce and being able to not have to buy certain things from the supermarket and actually peel it wash it cook it and yeah I'm looking forward to that a lot
26:59I'm really looking forward to the section for the kids they can enjoy it and you know have their own little growing space
27:12right I'm going to create a bug hotel underneath the seat that's ideal because the top of the seat keeps the hotel dry
27:19and what you're trying to do is create little gaps and areas for insects to overwinter lay eggs so that they're insulated and protected from birds from eating them
27:31and you can use all sorts of materials so I've got some bits of wood these are shingles so you can just stack those
27:38I've got some coir so I'm going to cut that up into strips and put between so you're just creating layers you can slice up canes into all sorts
27:48you ever wander around the garden like a teddy bear
28:09Chris is laying meadow turf to encourage more insects and wildlife into the garden
28:20and Charlie plans to introduce colourful flowers as well as fruit and veg throughout
28:26wow
28:28I knew you knew where it was
28:30look at that
28:31look at these marigolds
28:33companion planting for the vegetables
28:36exactly
28:37I mean I know it's a veggie garden
28:39but you have taken this to the next level
28:41what forgot us
28:42Ohida snap
28:43sugar snaps
28:44we've got carrots
28:45and you know being a carrot top I've got to have carrots have I
28:49this is and then i thought, I'd plant some strawberries in the wildlife area
28:55because the birds will like them but also the children I like
28:58eating, laava
29:00love this
29:06In a not-too-daunting nod to the former glory of this garden,
29:13Charlie wants to bring vegetables to two raised beds.
29:18Now, veg beds.
29:20So apart from sort of edible plants and that,
29:22we've got fun plants for the children.
29:24So we've got some pumpkins, which, of course, they climb,
29:27so they'll scrabble up over this trellis.
29:30We've got some beans that are dark-coloured,
29:33beans, like, almost black.
29:35So we've got lots of different things
29:37that the kids will like to grow as well.
29:40And that's just really a case of arranging them.
29:43And don't forget, there are some things, like the chives.
29:47Not only can you eat the leaves,
29:49but you can eat the flowers as well, and they taste of chives.
29:52So that's a good one.
29:54And we've got some nasturtiums.
29:55You can eat the leaves, you can eat the flowers,
29:58and you can eat the seeds.
30:00And, of course, they're a really great plant for children to grow
30:03because they're self-seed, they're a hardy annual,
30:06and they'll come up year after year.
30:08You've just got to look out for the very distinctive leaves.
30:13So when you see the leaf come up like that,
30:16you know it's nasturtium.
30:18Tropiolum.
30:20Tropiolum nasturtium?
30:21Tropiolum?
30:22I thought that was a place in Italy.
30:23The name comes from the shield that the gladiators used to hold
30:27because they were round, weren't they?
30:29See, I knew I was on the right path with the Italy reference.
30:33Yummy.
30:34Peppery.
30:35Tastes like peppery watercress.
30:36Chris, meanwhile, is planning the best way to introduce produce
30:47to the forgotten greenhouse
30:48that Lois and Dorian want brought back to life.
30:53The greenhouse, for me, is where all the magic comes together
30:57because this is where you can experiment with your plants
31:00and start to grow stuff that might be a little bit more tender,
31:03a bit more unusual or even a bit risky.
31:07Now, the easy way to get started in a greenhouse,
31:10everybody knows about them, is grow bags.
31:13What's good about them is that you can just buy them from the shop,
31:16chuck them on the floor of the greenhouse
31:17and do exactly what I'm doing here.
31:19Cut a slit in and plant some plants in.
31:23And then something else you can do if you're going to grow tomatoes,
31:27you can either get them quite small, plant them in the grow bag
31:31and let them grow up from there.
31:33But sometimes what you can do is grow your tomato in a bigger pot,
31:38cut the bottom off like this and then plant that into your grow bag
31:43so it's going to get that extra root space,
31:45all the nutrients from the grow bag
31:47and then you'll have loads of delicious tomatoes.
31:50And the other good thing about tomatoes
31:52is when you walk into a greenhouse
31:53and you've got all these tall tomato plants,
31:55you get that amazing smell
31:57and a very hot, ripe tomato is the best kind of tomato.
32:01I promised Dorian and Lois a grapevine.
32:18In actual fact, I've given them three grapevines.
32:22So you can now buy at garden centres a pot of grapevines.
32:26There's three different ones in there.
32:28There's a green grape, a red grape and a black grape.
32:33Now, I'm just tying it in, but I have to say,
32:35once they get going, you don't need to
32:38because they have these tendrils that self-twine.
32:41So you might need to sort of tie the odd branch in,
32:44but needless to say, grapevines,
32:47they like a nice sunny spot,
32:49which is absolutely ideal here,
32:51but it'll just give some dappled shade over the patio.
32:55And it sort of just says that,
32:58oh, look at that.
32:59I feel like I'm on holiday because of the grapevine.
33:11One of my favourite things to grow in a greenhouse is chillies.
33:15But what's great is they need this warmer climate.
33:18And in this greenhouse, it's in the perfect location
33:20because it gets the morning sun there,
33:23there's a tree casting a bit of shade at midday,
33:24and then you get the evening sun.
33:26So they are going to love it in here.
33:28And the kids can also grow other fun plants,
33:31like big squashes that will grow up and hang over,
33:33and even melons.
33:35And because we're a little bit further south down here
33:37and we're getting some really good sun,
33:39you might just get a nice big ripe melon in this greenhouse.
33:43But further up north might be a little more difficult.
33:54Oh, we've just made a very simple, straightforward arch
34:00out of some hazel branches.
34:03Good thing about hazel branches is they won't root down.
34:06If you use willow, you've then got a very big willow tree
34:10because it will root down.
34:11But hazels are often used for growing beans, up runner beans.
34:15But I'm going to be planting this honeysuckle.
34:18This one's Lannistera henry.
34:22Of course, it will scrabble up these hazel poles,
34:26but also up into the tree.
34:28And you'll have that gorgeous scent that will waft over.
34:30So it flowers from about June time through until August.
34:35Great for the insects.
34:38And I'm just planting it in this.
34:39It just makes it look very mature.
34:40The other thing I'm going to plant in this area
34:43is a few fruit bushes.
34:45So when the children are sat here in the sunshine,
34:47they can just pluck a few berries off
34:50while they're sat.
34:51Watching time go by.
35:05It does look nice, doesn't it?
35:06Ah!
35:07That could be nice in that gap by the pergola.
35:27Legs to the pergola.
35:28Spilling out.
35:29And it will start to spill out.
35:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:32Great idea.
35:33Now this is Hydrangea paniculata pink lady.
35:48And I love paniculata hydrangeas
35:51because you get these big panicle-shaped flowers.
35:54That's when they're in this big cone.
35:56And the best thing about hydrangeas
35:58is that you can get a hydrangea
36:02for every spot in the garden.
36:04So just because you've got one type,
36:06don't think,
36:06oh, no, I shouldn't have any more hydrangeas.
36:08I think you should get more
36:09because you can have hydrangeas for shade,
36:12hydrangeas for a sunnier spot,
36:14hydrangeas that are big-leaved and furry.
36:17You can get hydrangeas for everywhere.
36:19With plants and fresh produce in place,
36:30the raised patio, beds and pergola are settled.
36:35And Charlie has created a birdbath
36:37to encourage more wildlife.
36:41The team have worked hard
36:43to bring this forgotten garden back to life
36:45in just two days.
36:47Just testing out your seat.
36:52You look very comfy there.
36:53It's lovely, nice back to it.
36:55I know, it's good, isn't it?
36:57You know, we were a bit daunted
36:58by all this maturity, weren't we?
37:00But actually, I think that now
37:01is what makes the garden as well.
37:03Yeah, yeah, it just finishes it off.
37:05And they're going to have so many vegetables.
37:07Hello, look at this.
37:08Slightly over-planted, but hey-ho.
37:11It's fun, it's experimenting, you know.
37:13And then they'll be in there with the kids,
37:16plants growing, cucumbers and mallows.
37:19Chilis, melons.
37:20Melons, oh, yeah.
37:21Got melons.
37:22Lots of different things.
37:24Yeah.
37:24Yeah.
37:25Well, do you think it's time to go and get them?
37:26I think so.
37:27Come on.
37:28Come on.
37:28Oh!
37:32When the team arrived,
37:34this once award-winning allotment
37:36hosted nothing but bare grass,
37:39weeds and mature trees
37:40that were well past their prime.
37:47But with a £4,000 budget,
37:50it's been transformed
37:51into a modern, family-friendly space
37:54with new features
37:55and nods to its former glory.
37:57I'm just going to get you here.
38:02What will Lois and Dorian
38:03think of their new garden?
38:08Lois, Dorian,
38:09you inherited a beautiful garden
38:11with lots and lots of mature plants.
38:14You want your children
38:15to learn about wildlife,
38:17grow vegetables
38:18and have a space
38:20that you can use as a family.
38:22Do you want to open your eyes?
38:24Oh, my gosh!
38:28Wow!
38:29This is amazing!
38:30Yeah?
38:31I love this!
38:32I've done a fantastic job.
38:34I like this little sun...
38:35Sunflower.
38:36What?
38:37We actually dug that up
38:39in your garden.
38:40So it's an old, circular patio.
38:43Oh, this is beautiful!
38:45I'm so glad they noticed
38:46all the bits of paving
38:47because it's tying the new garden
38:49in with the history of the old.
38:51So we've added a bit more height
38:52to the garden with this pergola.
38:54So, yeah,
38:55so that would give you
38:56a little bit of interest in shade.
38:57We've got grapevine.
38:59It's because the kids love grapes.
39:00Oh, well, that's good then, so...
39:02It's crazy!
39:04Yeah?
39:05Shall we wander down
39:06to the produce here?
39:07Yes, please!
39:08I just love this.
39:10Yeah?
39:10Can you see yourself
39:11sat out here as a family?
39:12I'm still excited.
39:13What a bit of instruction!
39:15Okay, okay.
39:17Where Lois and Dorian's greenhouse
39:19was once rubble-strewn
39:21and barren?
39:25It's now ready
39:26for growing produce
39:27for the entire family.
39:30So, Chris has been busy
39:32on the greenhouse.
39:36Wow.
39:37That's so cool.
39:38It's a transformation.
39:39Yeah, so it's tidy.
39:40We've got some tomatoes in there,
39:42we've got a chilli plant,
39:43we've got some cucumbers,
39:46and there's a watermelon as well.
39:48Oh, my goodness.
39:50So, are you going to be using that?
39:52100%.
39:52I need that watermelon.
39:53You need the watermelon.
39:54I need that watermelon
39:55and the chillies, and, yeah.
39:57Chillies.
39:57I am very much looking forward
39:58to all the produce
39:59I'm going to have.
40:00Yeah.
40:01Right, so wander up
40:02to the next bit of produce.
40:05Even this looks amazing.
40:07The area in front of the greenhouse
40:11was a waste of land,
40:13overrun by invasive weeds
40:15and grass.
40:18It's now a screen seating area
40:20with various produce
40:21planted in two raised beds
40:23surrounding a bench
40:24built from sleepers.
40:26giving you a nice little bench seat
40:28to sit on,
40:30screened off the greenhouse,
40:31which will also shade it.
40:33But we've got peas,
40:34we've got pumpkins,
40:36courgettes,
40:37lettuce,
40:38parsley.
40:39All of that.
40:40All of that.
40:41But each year you can change
40:42and you can grow from seed
40:44so you can grow what you want.
40:46Absolutely.
40:47It's just incredible.
40:48This is going to give them
40:49such an opportunity
40:50to grow together
40:51as a family.
40:52And then we get
40:53to the children's area.
40:55Come and have a look.
40:56I don't know if it's going to be
40:57the kids' area anymore.
40:58I did wonder about that.
41:01The area at the entrance
41:03to the old garden
41:04that was an uneven
41:05and bare patch of grass
41:07is now a child-friendly
41:10wildlife zone
41:11with a gnarly wood path,
41:13bespoke seats
41:13with bug hotels underneath
41:15and wild meadow turf
41:17to attract pollinators
41:18and fascinate the children.
41:21So much character.
41:22When you've got vegetables
41:23and that,
41:24having wildlife
41:24and you attract butterflies
41:26and bees
41:27and everything like that,
41:28it helps with the pollination.
41:29This is very magical.
41:32I just...
41:32I can't believe you've done this.
41:34It's just incredible
41:35that you can create this
41:36with just your hands.
41:37It's just incredible, isn't it?
41:39Yes.
41:39So Lee has been really busy
41:41making these bespoke seats
41:43for the children.
41:44She loved them.
41:45Kids, us, I don't know.
41:46And I was saying
41:47I think mum and dad
41:49are going to be bagsying those
41:51and send the children
41:52down there to play.
41:53Get them some little plastic chairs
41:54to put them on the side.
41:57And the bug hotel
41:58underneath the seat.
42:00Do you know what's incredible?
42:01I just love,
42:02especially those strawberries
42:03that they almost seem
42:04to be growing out of the crack.
42:05Do you think it was worth it?
42:06A hundred percent.
42:07Okay, yes.
42:07I have, like...
42:09It's just...
42:10It's just incredible
42:11what you've managed to achieve
42:12in such a short period of time.
42:14I have to say
42:14it wasn't just me
42:16it's the landscapers
42:17and Chris
42:17I've got to clap for you
42:20and the team
42:21this is a team clap.
42:22I don't usually give them this.
42:23It's just phenomenal.
42:25Thank you both so, so much.
42:26The kids are just going
42:27to be so excited
42:28I cannot wait
42:29to see their reactions.
42:30So shall we get them out then?
42:32Here they come.
42:34Mummy, I'd like monkey bars.
42:37The team have worked hard
42:39to create a creative
42:40and productive family space
42:42in Luton.
42:44What can you see over there?
42:45Lois, Dorian and the children
42:47now have the perfect spot
42:49to grow, play
42:50and be inspired by.
42:52When I opened my eyes
42:53I just couldn't believe
42:54the transformation.
42:56Like, it's really incredible
42:57how they, you know,
42:59just kept, you know,
43:01a lot of the original character
43:02of the garden
43:03and kind of blended
43:04new elements
43:05and weaved it into it.
43:07Seeing it in real life
43:08and kind of walking around
43:09and breathing it
43:10and living it
43:10it's just absolutely amazing.
43:12So for me
43:12it wins all the awards.
