"TikTok has hired a former Israeli army instructor to oversee the popular application’s hate-speech policy, the company told Jewish Insider earlier this week."
TYT is the largest online news network in the country. It presents news, context and analysis. We have dozens of on-air hosts on half a dozen major channels on almost all the platforms. We also have a live 24-hour news channel that features all our shows.
The Young Turks is the flagship show of the TYY Network. The Young Turks is the longest running daily show in internet history. We’re about to celebrate our 20th anniversary as a digital native show.
On the network, we do things a little differently than other places. We present the news first, with all of the facts and context you need, which is a rarity in commentary-heavy online shows. We then also give analysis and perspective, which is rare in traditional news.
Our commentary and perspective are almost always on the left, but we have an enormous range of opinions on the network. Hosts are allowed to think and say whatever they like. Perspectives usually range from the far left to the center of the political spectrum.

00:00I grew up in a traditional Jewish household, but in an untraditional decision after graduating
00:06from Michigan, I made Aliyah and enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces.
00:11I spent the next two years serving as a madrichat shirion, an instructor in the Armored Corps.
00:16To many, this might seem like a contradiction. For a woman who identifies as liberal and
00:22progressive to be a Zionist so committed as to join the IDF, for me, these two identities go
00:28hand in hand. And now, this ex-IDF instructor has been hired to serve as TikTok's so-called
00:36hate speech manager in order to censor what she deems to be anti-Semitic content on the platform.
00:44Now, the US government didn't manage to ban TikTok, and we all knew what they wanted to
00:50ban TikTok about, right? It wasn't actually because they're worried about data collection
00:55by a foreign actor. You think our government cares about our data being collected?
01:01Our data gets collected every minute of every day.
01:04Whether it's a foreign actor or not, our government officials could not care less.
01:10But they really didn't like the fact that a lot of young people were sharing information
01:16about the war crimes Israel is committing on TikTok. And that content goes viral. A lot of young people
01:23rely on social media, for better or worse, for their information. And our government officials don't
01:29like that. Former Republican Senator Mitt Romney said that on the record. Even Nancy Pelosi alluded to that
01:36in a statement. So now, if you're not gonna ban TikTok, why not get a former IDF soldier
01:44to serve as the top censor for the platform? Fantastic.
01:50So TikTok's new hire is a woman by the name of Erica Mendel. And after serving in the IDF,
01:56she worked in the Biden White House, because of course she did. According to Jewish Insider,
02:01the streaming platform enlisted Erica Mendel, a former State Department contractor who worked for
02:06Ambassador Deborah Lipstack, the Biden administration special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism,
02:14to join TikTok's global public policy and government affairs team.
02:20Now, if you're wondering, what exactly is she gonna do in this role for TikTok?
02:26Like exactly what is she gonna focus on? In her newly created role, meaning this role was created
02:32specifically to censor criticism of the Israeli government, let's keep it real.
02:38Mendel will develop and drive the company's positions on hate speech, seek to influence
02:43legislative and regulatory frameworks and analyze hate speech trends with a particular focus on
02:50anti-Semitic content among other duties cited in an official job description shared by TikTok, right?
02:57You know, it's interesting because as we all know, I mean, anyone who spent any time on social media
03:02can tell you there's all sorts of terrible people who say terrible things.
03:06It can be sexist, it could be racist, it's just gross, right? Some people like to use social media
03:14to air their disgusting grievances. But never have I seen an effort to ensure that there's like a new
03:23role created, a top censor role to ensure that these bad actors don't engage in racism, sexism, whatever.
03:31But antisemitism, we gotta create a role for that, right? And by the way, I detest antisemitism,
03:39as I do racism and sexism and all the other stuff. But this ain't about actual antisemitism,
03:47this is about protecting good old Israel as they're carrying out a genocide in Gaza.
03:52And as they continue on with their campaign to annex the West Bank and steal the land in Gaza,
03:58that's what this is really about. Okay, so she also spent some time working in Trump's second
04:05administration as well. Mendel, who previously served as an assistant director of program
04:11development at the American Jewish Committee, had briefly worked for the special envoy's office
04:16in the second Trump administration before she was finally hired by TikTok.
04:21Now look, she's doing this out of the kindness of her own heart. She just wants to make sure that
04:26TikTok is a friendly place for people of all backgrounds to create content, share content.
04:33It's not like she's gonna get a fat salary for doing this, right? Except she is, this is amazing.
04:39And look, TikTok's a private company, they can pay her whatever they want. TikTok's a private company,
04:43they can hire a censor if they want. I obviously have a problem with it because I can see the tea
04:48leaves, read the tea leaves, and I see that this is really just about shutting down a certain form of
04:53speech that a foreign government doesn't like. But her base salary for censoring people for criticizing
04:59Israel will be anywhere between $178,000 and $330,480. And that's according to an official
05:09listing for the job. But she was gonna get hired for the job as the listing was posted.
05:15I wanna be clear about that because the role was created after a high level meeting took place
05:21between the Anti-Defamation League, they organized the meeting with higher ups over at TikTok.
05:29And Mendel was part of this whole process. So TikTok last year complied
05:33with demands from the Israeli firm Cyberwell to censor content exposing the Israeli government's
05:40lies about Hamas committing mass rape on October 7th. Remember that lie?
05:46Now look, Hamas did carry out rapes, but mass rape has not been proven. And this organization
05:54wanted to censor content that exposed that the Israeli government was lying about mass rape.
06:01So journalist Lee Fong actually wrote about it a year ago. Here's the piece,
06:06in case you wanna read it for yourselves. Cyberwell is an NGO, partner trust and safety org,
06:13working with Meta and TikTok to censor criticism of Israel, including accurate critiques of the IDF.
06:19The group claims to be independent, but deleted records show it is managed by former Israeli
06:25intelligence. Fantastic. Many younger Americans, by the way, as I mentioned,
06:30do rely on social media to stay updated on the reality of world events. Cuz you're not gonna get
06:36the reality consuming corporate news here in the United States.
06:40And by the way, DropSite News is also reporting that unfortunately, some of the independent media
06:46has been infiltrated by self-interested actors, okay? Compromised essentially by pro-Israeli forces.
06:55So a piece written for DropSite News that I highly recommend you read,
06:59a pro-Israel nonprofit is funneling news content through Barry Weiss's free press.
07:04It seems like the free press ain't so free. As Weiss's new organization explores a deal to sell
07:11to CBS, much of its content on the Middle East is produced by a shadowy think tank tied to pro-Israel
07:17advocacy. So the organization in question is the Center for Peace Communications, CPC.
07:24The CPC is a nonprofit organization whose board of directors includes multiple senior figures drawn from
07:30pro-Israel think tanks in Washington DC, including the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the
07:36Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Now, if you're wondering where this nonprofit gets its
07:43funding from, well, it is financially backed by the likes of the Adelson Family Foundation,
07:49which gave the CPC $150,000 in 2023 alone. Now, the CPC has helped the free press produce reporting
08:00on the Middle East that is aligned with the shifting strategic goals and public relations needs of the
08:05Israeli government, with the organization cited as the source for free press content on the region
08:12in a steady stream of stories since 2023. Is anyone really surprised by any of this? I mean,
08:18the coverage of what's happening in the Middle East on the free press has been
08:24a joke, like completely biased. I mean, so much so that they were putting out pieces
08:31claiming that the starvation campaign in Gaza was a myth until they just couldn't deny it anymore
08:38because the evidence was so overwhelming. That's what you left the New York Times for, Barry, for this?
08:44The free press interview, I'll give you an example. They did interview this guy, Yasir Abu Shabab, okay?
08:54So the free press interview with Shabab offered him a chance to sell himself as this anti-terror militia
09:02or his anti-terror militia called the Popular Forces while responding to charges that he was tied to ISIS
09:08and had previously been jailed on drug trafficking charges. So the interview was all about laundering his
09:13reputation. All this talk is lies and slander against us, Shabab told free press in an audio
09:19message and video later posted online. We categorically reject this extremist ideology.
09:25We believe in peace and we believe in secular governance. Now, why is this guy's reputation
09:30being laundered? Why would the free press even care to do that? Why would the CPC, this Israel-backed,
09:35non-profit want to do that? Well, it turns out that Yasir Abu Shabab is a Bedouin who leads
09:43the Israeli-backed militia in the Gaza Strip. And basically, Israel wants to launder this guy's
09:54reputation because they're supporting him and whatever he's up to in Gaza. By the way, Israel is currently
10:00funding militia groups. Okay, this is also well documented in Gaza, just like Netanyahu facilitated
10:08the funding of Hamas. I don't know what else to say. What's happening is so gross. And I do feel
10:19that our country right now, whether you're talking about our media or our government,
10:24government, and at this point, even our social media platforms is occupied by a foreign government,
10:30because it literally is. It literally is.
10:35Last week, the Wall Street Journal also published an op-ed written by Shabab,
10:39expressing his readiness to support Israel's takeover of Gaza, notwithstanding previous
10:45Israeli news reports that the would-be militant leader is illiterate.
10:50So the free press is, again, helping this guy launder his reputation.
10:54Now, let's talk a little more about CPC, this organization. It turns out the founder and
10:59president of CPC is a guy by the name of Joseph Broad. Now, who's Joseph Broad? I mean,
11:04I hadn't heard of him before. Turns out that he's a piece of crap, all on his own right, and even pled
11:11guilty to charges of smuggling stolen antiques out of Iraq following the US invasion of that country in 2003.
11:23Okay, total scumbag. So in the free press video detailing Shabab's plans to take over
11:29control of the Gaza Strip with Israeli support, Broad appears as a commentator defending Shabab
11:35from allegations of extremist ties, stating that, quote, I'm fairly confident that he is not ISIS.
11:41Though conceding that, one cannot preclude that he may have had ties with the group in the past.
11:50Amazing. Well, all of this is super relevant on its own, but it's extra relevant when you consider
11:56the fact that Barry Weiss is currently in talks with CBS to sell the free press to CBS for a whopping
12:02$250 million, even though that amount far exceeds the roughly $15 million a year that it is estimated
12:10to drive in a subscription revenue. And reports from late July indicate that
12:17Barry Weiss has in fact met with David Ellison, the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and soon
12:23to be owner of CBS News about a possible acquisition of the publication.
12:28So it's important to know what type of influences, what kind of influencing factors lead to the type
12:39of reporting we're consuming here in the United States. That's why independent sources who are truly
12:45independent and have values, have morals, want to get accurate information to the people,
12:52they're the most valuable platforms in the country. And I hope everyone is just mindful
12:59about what they're consuming, what's influencing the news that they're consuming, and question
13:04everything, question us. I like that, as long as it's fair, because if I get something wrong,
13:10I want to make sure I correct it. And you know what, I'm human, I have my own biases, and I do want
13:15to be checked on that. Because at the end of the day, what's more important to me
13:18is that I'm doing right by my audience, and I'm getting you guys accurate information,
13:24and not feeding into this slop that makes up American media.
13:29Every time you ring the bell below, an angel gets his swings.
13:33Totally not true, but it does keep you updated on our live shows.
