Plans for extending light rail to Woden include a possible short tunnel in the shadow of Parliament House to link the line from Commonwealth Avenue to State Circle. Video by Keegan Carroll
Transcript
00:00So we're at the bottom end of Commonwealth Avenue. This is the preferred alignment for
00:11Stage 2B and this is at a location that we refer to as Transition Zone A, where we transition
00:18from Commonwealth Avenue down onto State Circle and we're proposing a small short covered section
00:25which effectively dives down from Coronation Avenue, dives down underneath the southbound
00:33carriageway and pops out on State Circle there.
00:38I think Canberrans are really familiar with this part of Canberra. They drive through it
00:42on a daily basis, particularly if they're coming from the south side or whether they're
00:47commuting in to work in the National Triangle in one of the government departments. We expect
00:53this to provide additional capacity per hour out of 2,500 trips, which is significant and
01:01is necessary as the city grows. I'd encourage Canberrans to have a look at the interactive
01:08draft EIS map for the entire extension of Light Rail Stage 2B, both on the preferred alignment
01:15and also on the Barton Parks alignment as well. There is an opportunity to provide submissions
01:23before early September, so there's still some time to be able to view the documents and
01:27provide feedback. It's a really different project to what Canberrans might have seen.
01:33I think this is a discussion that we'll be having with some of the stakeholders around the precinct.
01:38We will be engaging extensively with government departments in the area, Department of Parliamentary
01:46Services, as well as the NCA and of course DECU as well, who are undertaking the first stage
01:54of assessment as part of the EIS. And we do want to hear from them what are the issues
02:00that we haven't addressed in the draft EIS or that need some further work before it's finalised
02:08for submissions. So this is an opportunity not just for the broader community, but for
02:13the Australian Government to provide their views on the project. There's been a lot of engagement
02:17that Infrastructure Canberra has had with the Australian Government, but we need to make sure
02:23that those submissions by the Australian Government are made through this process so that we can
02:29respond to them now in the design before we move to the next stage.
