00:00The government of Angola announced that the number of fatalities from violent protests against a fuel price increase had climbed to 22 on Wednesday, up from the previous day's count of four.
00:12The unrest began on Monday when minibus taxi associations initiated a three-day strike in response to the government's decision to rise diesel prices by one-third, part of a strategy to reduce expensive subsidies and strengthen public finances.
00:30Violence, looting and confrontations with police erupted in the capital, Luanda, and subsequently spread to other provinces.
00:38A statement from the presidency also reported 197 injuries and 1,214 arrests, while 66 shops and 25 vehicles were vandalized. Additionally, some supermarkets and warehouses were looted, according to the statement.
