00:00When the allegations against childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown first came out, it sent
00:07shockwaves around the country.
00:10And I spoke to parents and childcare safety advocates who had this overwhelming sense
00:15of frustration as to how this could happen.
00:19So today the Victorian government will be feeling this pressure.
00:22The parliament will be meeting for the first time since these allegations first came out.
00:28And they're going to be feeling pressure from all sides.
00:30The Victorian Greens are pushing for a parliamentary inquiry into the state's childcare worker regulators
00:37and also child safety authorities.
00:39And this is coming amid allegations that the government's own review has been designed
00:44in a way that would prevent further investigation.
00:47The Greens are also calling for change to happen at a national level.
00:52So earlier this morning on ABC News Breakfast, Senator Steph Hodgins May said that the system
00:58right now is set up in a way that's failing children.
01:02The Greens are really pushing for more.
01:04We've written to the Prime Minister urging him to work with us on a national watchdog with
01:07teeth that can enforce our national quality standards in a way that hasn't happened.
01:13Now, in addition to what the Greens are calling for, the Victorian opposition is also moving
01:18its own private members bill to completely and immediately overhaul the state's working
01:24with children check laws.
01:27And also as part of this bill, it wants to implement recommendations that were made by the Victorian
01:31Ombudsman three years ago.
01:33The state government has been facing quite a lot of criticism for not implementing these
01:37changes already.
01:39But it has promised that there will be child safety reforms.
01:42And that will be in what's expected to be quite heated debate in Parliament over the next three
01:48days.
