00:00as we go team by team across the nfl we have broken down the top team or at least perceived
00:11top team in the afc south the houston texans but there are a couple of teams in there and
00:15sorry it's not the tennessee titans that you know could give them a run for their money maybe even
00:19steal this division the jacksonville jaguars we will talk about more coming up and of course
00:25the indianapolis colts let's get into our colts deep dive here with our next guest and we are
00:31proud to welcome on derrick schultz he is on twitter at schultz 975 from isc sports network
00:38derrick welcome to the program let's show those graphics again real quick let's run through some
00:42of these odds then we'll get derrick's thoughts obviously an over under of seven and a half wins
00:48that is plus money to the over at plus 105 uh 330 plus 330 to win the south 36 to one to win the
00:56conference 85 to one i see it the latest odds to win the super bowl even just to make the playoffs
01:03you want to take the division out of it you're looking at basically two to one at plus money
01:07minus 250 to miss so clearly you know in the eyes of vegas not the highest of expectations for
01:14indianapolis going into a new year a third year out of shane steichen and a big part of that probably
01:19derrick is the quarterback position so let's start by asking you this which guy starts more games
01:25under center for this team is it going to be anthony richardson or is it going to be daniel jones
01:30how about this and i'm not trying to cop out on your question but um what if the person that starts
01:36the season is not the person that starts the most games because i think yeah i think there's a
01:42possibility given both daniel jones and anthony richardson's injury history that either one of
01:47them is going to get hurt at some point this year and one's going to have to come in for the other
01:50now we don't know uh which one is is going to come in for the other you know guys uh we're four days
01:55into training camp here in in nearby westfield the suburb of indianapolis and the two are trying to
02:00see who is the least underwhelming of the two quarterbacks that's going to be the one that ends up
02:04winning the qb1 job but in all honesty um you know kidding aside this is a make or break year for
02:10anthony richardson they brought in daniel jones to push him the presumptions here are that anthony
02:14richardson is going to be the week one starter but i would not be shocked in the least if it ends up
02:19being daniel jones because that's how wide the learning curve has been unfortunately for the colts
02:24third year quarterback who they formally drafted number four i real i feel really bad for anthony
02:30richardson derrick he's such a good kid and we've seen a lot of reports about what this guy does for
02:34the community and all that good stuff i followed him at the university of florida and you know he's
02:40been put in a position where he's been asked to run the ball he's fumbled he's gotten hurt
02:44it's been a tough road uh for richardson you say it's make or break for sure it might also be make or
02:51break for shane steikin what what's the temperature on his hot seat if daniel jones goes on to have great
02:57success and the colts have a decent season does he still keep his job is is steikin tied to the
03:04success of richardson i guess is what i'm asking yeah that's it's an excellent question right because
03:10shane steikin himself is only in year three and that feels early but in nfl head coaching circles
03:14you know guys get canned after heck one year or two years um you know to even expanded past the head
03:21coach chris bowers in year nine guys general manager the colts have won one playoff game they've won
03:25zero division titles in that time so are all three of them tied together because if richardson
03:31crashes and burns presumably you would get a new general manager to pick the next quarterback and
03:36if you're going to do that then you might as well say hey wait a minute uh he's probably going to want
03:40to pick his own head coach too so you don't end into that awkward situation so yes i mean to answer
03:44your question i i do think everybody's feeling it right now guys uh the general manager's feeling it
03:48shane steikin's feeling it the quarterback's feeling it um that the time has come to do something now i
03:55think they know realistically this is not going to be a team that contends for the super bowl barring
03:58something wild and unforeseen but can you get to 10 wins and get back to the playoffs and win a
04:05playoff game can you win the the league's crappiest division for the first time in a decade if you do
04:11any of those things then i do think that that ends up being survivable for steikin at all feels like a
04:17silly question but you know which unit has the bigger questions you know is it the offense where
04:22you've got the most important position on the field in quarterback but around that position
04:26a good chunk of talent still one of the premier backs in the league and in jonathan taylor michael
04:31pitman jr josh downs was excellent last year out of the slot you know you draft tyler warren 14th
04:37overall a lot of promise there or defensively where again there's some talent you know deforest
04:43buckner's getting up there but it's a new defensive coordinator now with uh lou anarimo so you know who
04:50ultimately is is kind of more uh under fire so to speak adam it's still all about the offense and
04:58the quarterback right because you have to get that right you can have all of the toys in the the toy
05:04bin but if you don't have the person that's gonna you know turn the crank if you will to make the
05:09worst analogy in your show's history then it's not gonna end up working you know defensively there is
05:14talent there you know they added trevarius ward who's got an all pro pedigree i know he had kind of a
05:18disappointing year last year but a former super bowl champion i really like cam bynum who played
05:23extensively with minnesota and you know those were teams that obviously didn't go to the super bowl
05:28or anything like that but they want he was on a 13 win team he was on a 14 win team and i think guys
05:32that's really what the colts need they need somebody to come in that has kind of been there done that
05:36and and knows how winning in the nfl works because a lot of their core pieces unfortunately you know
05:42guys like quentin nelson and jonathan taylor they haven't won anything they have they haven't been in
05:46games like that whereas ward and bynum and some of those others free agent additions have so you
05:51know linebacker is a big question mark they did bring back zaire franklin but they use they lose
05:56ej speed they have a lot of you know borderline roster guys that are fighting for spots that
06:01probably wouldn't normally make 53 men rosters on other nfl teams that are going to be playing a lot
06:06of snaps to them at linebacker but you would rather be short at linebacker than short at quarterback
06:11you could you could survive having linebacker be a weak link you can't survive having quarterback be a weak
06:15link and that's still very much a question mark the most the league's most important position
06:19um for the colts going into 2025 it feels to me derrick like defense is maybe the side of the ball
06:27or the area of this team that offers the most promise i would see an arumo making a splash in
06:32his first year a new start for him we know how well he did with cincinnati for a number of years fell
06:37off the last couple of years but he lost a lot of players too i i think he's still got what it takes
06:43they drafted very heavily you talk about cornerback defensive back position they they drafted very
06:48heavily and in free agency really loaded up in the defensive secondary it's seen now the pass rush
06:55may be lacking a little bit quiddy pay you know i don't know if he's really made the splash that some
07:00people expected um but it seems like that would have to be the stable unit for this team to have
07:07success on offense the defense has got to show up if they're going to do anything offensively
07:11brady are you trying to say that they shouldn't be giving up 45 points in the december game to
07:16the giants is that what you're saying as far as a winning recipe a lot of people in survivor i can
07:21tell you that much this defense last year guys um when it was bad it was really bad and and i think
07:29you're right that they noticed that i think we all noticed that and they said look let's go out and
07:34spend the colts don't usually spend in free agency that has not been chris bowler's mo but those big
07:37contracts to warden to bynum they're expecting layout to lot to their first round pick from last
07:42year to take a jump in year two he flashed a little bit last year you know quiddy pay has maybe not
07:47become the you know keep you up at night type edge that they were hoping when they drafted him with
07:52the top 15 pick a couple years ago but he's been a solid producer for them so if lots who makes that
07:57jump you still have grover stewart and deforce buckner two of the best interior defensive linemen in the afc
08:02so you know you can talk yourself into this being at the very least a middle of the road defense
08:08and if they could be a middle of the road defense with competent quarterback play with all the weapons
08:13that they have offensively and an offensive line that still has some question marks but it's still
08:17a solid to good group you know this could be a 10-ish win football team it really could but still
08:23there are a lot of question marks abound eight nine last year and just perfectly mediocre
08:30under steik in 17 and 17 through the two years but you know you alluded to this obviously it is a bad
08:37division but there's you know this could break right this could break right that kind of thing
08:40could you talk yourself into this team winning the division yeah you can because guys and you know this
08:46i i know nobody really nationally pays attention the afc south why the heck would you but it's been
08:52essentially since peyton manning and and that era moved on it's essentially been a little bit of a
08:57carousel yeah you've had some nine and ten ish win texan teams whatever you've never really had
09:02somebody come and and take a stranglehold of this division so yes you can talk me into the
09:07colts winning the division you can talk me into you know most of these teams maybe outside of
09:11tennessee with winning the division as well just because it's seemingly wide open every year
09:15we have derrick schultz with us from the isc sports network previewing the 2025 campaign
09:22the indianapolis colts more of that when we come back we have derrick schultz hanging out here with
09:28us again on twitter at schultz 975 he is from the isc sports network previewing the 2025 season for the
09:34indianapolis colts so what's interesting here in you know i don't know how much derrick you
09:39personally really dive into gambling or paying attention to odds or that type of thing but you
09:44know the prop market is scarce for indianapolis largely i think because anyway of the quarterback
09:50position you know you're not right now i'm i think you'd really have to dig to scrounge up some
09:56props on either richardson or jones given the fact that we don't know who is going to start and you
10:02know a little surprising to me is the wide receivers you know i i guess you know they're directly tied to
10:08the qbs but even still you know how much is pitman's yards total or downs yards total you know really
10:14going to fluctuate in terms of a an expectation for the year around which qb it is maybe enough to
10:21not have those props listed because i'm not seeing them right now what i can tell you though is jonathan
10:26taylor out of the backfield is there and it would seem like a modest number with uh fanduel having
10:331175 and a half rushing yards which is still about 300 or so 250 below what here and did that in only
10:4314 games he was great thing with taylor is we don't know if he's going to be on the field again he missed
10:48three games last year he was limited to only 10 games in 2023 11 the year before that so you know is
10:57is this a guy that you can bank on that you can depend upon being out there on the field yeah it's
11:04hard to right because you're right that he has missed games um over the past couple of seasons in fact you
11:09have to go back to uh 2021 for the last time that he played a a full season but still even in 13 14 games
11:17you're talking about a guy that rolls out of bed and is going to get you 1200 yards for the most part
11:21um and he had a great year last year as as their dynamic uh playmaker and you know guys uh with the
11:27quarterback play as bad as it's been or as mediocre as it's been at times uh for him to still be producing
11:32those numbers i think says something about how dynamic of a running back that he is but it will
11:37be interesting to see if they can take some of the pressure off of him and and really unlock anthony
11:43richardson i i know brady you had mentioned him as a runner and you know a lot of people hold their
11:47breath like oh my god like he's made of glass don't don't run with him but
11:50he's so good at that you know richardson is the one thing that he doesn't have a learning curve
11:55with as a quarterback is he can actually get out and run you know that's that's one thing he doesn't
11:59have to learn how to do and can you sprinkle that in enough to not be reckless with it but also not
12:06be overly conservative because if you can mix in anthony richardson as a runner and the opposing
12:11defense has to pay attention to that as well and then you've got taylor back there i i really think
12:15that that can be a lethal combination the colts were never really able to quite unlock that even
12:20though taylor had a very productive year last year so he's kind of the one constant guys with this
12:24offense the one guy that you really don't have to worry about you can you can just say okay you know
12:2813 14 games even if he misses a couple of games we're talking about 13 1400 yards we know what we're
12:34going to get from jonathan taylor it's really the rest of the offense that is a question mark
12:37yeah derrick i i think the only thing that's been a problem we know anthony richardson can run but can
12:43he protect himself can he protect the football you know he just doesn't he's not good at that part of it
12:49he knows how to run for sure and did it very successfully in college but this is a little
12:53different here and i think that's where he needs to change or he's going to end up injured once again
12:58we were talking about something off air and i think this is a good piece that is worth mentioning here
13:03on the show and that's that wide receiver room we all know michael pitman jr very very good player i
13:09think we got pieces of alec pierce last year he had some big catches some big games josh downs was
13:15relatively new to everybody but this seems to be a possible bright spot for this team
13:19yeah absolutely i mean you had and i know it doesn't sound like much but considering
13:24again the quarterback play with richardson and an ancient joe flacco you had three 800 yard receivers
13:30last year which you know you're not going to throw a parade over right but three three out 300 you know
13:35they were all consistent and they really unlocked alec pierce brady last year and you know there were big
13:40question marks he was the second round pick in the first two years everybody was like
13:42is this guy going to get cut like what is he going to do for us uh and then he ends up you know having
13:48a really big year three so you add in the fact uh ad mitchell who they dropped in the second round
13:53out of texas they really like he's had a little bit of a tough training camp so far but he's a player
13:57that if he puts it together as well um you know he could really you know when you're talking about a
14:01fourth guy in your wide receiver room you could do a lot worse ad mitchell and then as you mentioned
14:06tyler warren the colts had probably the worst tight end position group in the entire league in 2024
14:12and even if warren is just you know okay as a rookie okay is a lot better than what they were so
14:19you know again kind of like we're talking about with the defense there are ways to talk yourself
14:24into this being a good offense and a good football team it so much relies on what they're going to get
14:31out of the quarterback spot because the pieces are there you know this is in the colts team from two
14:35years ago where you know it's michael pitman jr and a bunch of nothing or you know jonathan taylor
14:40had the contract situation the whole deal you know there are some talent there is some talent
14:44on this roster it's just about you know is there enough talent at the key positions the winning
14:49positions edge quarterback you know those ones that's where the colts have really fallen short
14:54over the last six seven eight years this schedule arguably finishes tougher than it begins not to say
15:02that there's you know no hiccups along the way obviously at the beginning i mean you got the
15:07denver's there at denver at home in week two you know first two games out of the gate being at home
15:13it's it's helpful in miami i don't think a lot of people are terribly impressed with right now
15:17then obviously road stretch it's this two two two kind of situation that we get into and every other
15:22for a little bit but you know in terms of a fast start and that doesn't mean you know oh they
15:29gotta go five and one or something like that really put the pressure on the texans all that stuff but
15:33you know we we know how this works you you can't win a season at the beginning but you can lose it
15:39you know so to uh to what degree do the to the colts need to kind of get off to you know at least by like
15:46i'm looking again looking at this schedule whether it's miami or maybe tennessee the raiders the you know
15:53maybe even the cardinals like do they need to have four wins let's say by mid-october
15:57to realistically be in the hunt to win this division yeah because the division is all
16:02backloaded the division games are all late so you have to survive really the first half of the
16:06schedule and put yourself in that position but guys i'll leave you with this my favorite trivia
16:09question the colts have not won a season opener since 2013 do you know who the opposing quarterback
16:13was it was for the raiders i know we got like 10 seconds now terrell prior team not that long ago
16:21but terrell prior that's my favorite trivia question colts have not won a season opener
16:25since they beat terrell prior derrick real quick over or under seven and a half wins for the colts
16:32i'm gonna go over because i think they're gonna be nine and eight
16:35okay but i don't feel super confident about that because of the quarterback stuff guys
16:39all right again derrick schultz from isc sports network schultz 975 on twitter thanks to derrick and
16:48uh we will come on back break down our thoughts on this team brady and i we return
16:53you
