00:00When it comes to pressure, do players get excited about it?

00:03Like, is there a thirst?

00:04Is there a, you can't wait for this blitz to be called?

00:07I think they, I think if you ask most defensive players,

00:10they'd tell you that they enjoy that part of it,

00:12especially the guy that's actually blitzing.

00:15You know, the guy that gets stuck covering all the time,

00:17maybe they don't feel the same way,

00:18but yeah, it's an aggressive approach,

00:21and you know, by nature, defensive players

00:23want to be aggressive,

00:24so that's probably a pretty good statement.

00:25Does the play caller hold his breath,

00:27or is the play caller?

00:28I'm always praying, I'm not holding my breath,

00:30I'm always saying a prayer over there on the sideline,

00:33but it's all good, it's all good.

00:34Steve, you spent a year in Barcelona,

00:37what do you remember about that time?

00:38Listen, I loved Barcelona,

00:40we were there as the Olympics were coming in,

00:43and Jack McNeil, the head coach,

00:45I loved working for him, but the people were great,

00:47the fans were terrific,

00:48living over there on Sitges, at the beach there,

00:51was fun too, so I enjoyed my time there.

00:53Are you excited about the NFL going to first Madrid?

00:56Yeah, I had just read that a little while,

00:59I've always hoped that they would get over,

01:00maybe someday they'll be in Barcelona as well.

01:02I mean, so I coached in Frankfurt, Germany

01:05after the Barcelona years,

01:07and last year we were able to go as a Chiefs team

01:09to back to Frankfurt was special,

01:11maybe I get the chance to do the same thing back in Spain.

01:14Be great.

01:15You spent seven years as an assistant

01:17under this Eagle staff, under head coach Andy Reid,

01:20how has that time prepared you

01:21to now take over as a defensive coordinator

01:23for the Chiefs with another Andy Reid team?

01:25Yeah, well listen, I'm indebted to Andy,

01:27he brought me into the league in 1999

01:29on that first staff in Philadelphia,

01:32and then we kind of part,

01:34we were on separate teams for about 10 years period,

01:37and fortunately for me, you know,

01:39Andy was nice enough to bring me back on his staff,

01:42and I'm sure glad I'm back with him.

01:45Coach, any extra motivation for you

01:47playing against a team that you formerly worked for

01:49on Sunday and trying to beat them

01:51for the second time in three years?

01:53Well, listen, I think when you get to this point,

01:55it doesn't matter who you play,

01:57you feel really good if you can find a way to win,

01:58but I got a lot of respect for the Eagles,

01:59and I love Jeffrey Lurie, the owner there,

02:02and there's still some people there

02:04that my wife and I are really close to,

02:05so hopefully it'll be a really good game,

02:07and maybe we can find a way to come out on top,

02:10that would be a good thing.

02:11Coach, you're famous for obviously

02:13being a blitz-heavy coordinator,

02:14and bringing all different types of exotic blitzes.

02:18When I went through the film and watched

02:19the FC Championship, you were able to fool Josh Allen

02:22into Bill's offensive line late in the game,

02:24getting free rushers.

02:26How do you game plan for that,

02:27and how do you create those opportunities for your guys?

02:29Yeah, I think the way it's created

02:31is having good players, and assistant coaches

02:34that feed the game plan during the week,

02:37and then when we have something like that,

02:40it takes 11 guys operating at a high level in that moment,

02:45and they did that.

02:46I mean, not just the guys that were blitzing,

02:47but the guys that were covering.

02:49So that one particular play,

02:50I wish we'd have had more of those in the game,

02:52because 29 points was way too many for me,

02:55but fortunately for us, we had a good down.

02:58I saw you have D tackles dropping out,

02:59and you're running cover too behind it.

03:01It was impressive.

03:01My other question for you is,

03:03going up against the Philadelphia Eagles

03:05in the running attack, it's a different beast this week.

03:07Yeah, you don't get to do too many of those things

03:10when they're running the football.

03:11So, I mean, listen, first and second down

03:13is gonna be really important for us

03:15to get them in some of those situations

03:16where we can be aggressive,

03:18but they're solid everywhere,

03:21and that offensive line is hard to attack

03:23because of who they are and the way they play,

03:25but hopefully we'll have a couple of good plays go our way.

03:28And then my last question for you,

03:29how do you balance that fine line

03:31of getting your safeties and linebackers

03:32to disguise their coverage without getting out of position?

03:35Yeah, listen, our guys do a great job of that,

03:37I mean, and that is part of it,

03:39because you can get caught out of position.

03:41So, you know, if we're on point,

03:43we function well as 11 guys,

03:45then we've got a fighting chance of doing something.
