00:00Day five, Patriots training camp, first day in pads, full pads, has wrapped up.
00:05Brable discussing Will Campbell.
00:07A couple of different ways to read that, Keith, going into the first fully padded practice at Patriots training camp.
00:12Jones and Keith here, live, presented by McFarlane Energy.
00:16Either he's a little lukewarm on Will Campbell, or, more likely, he's just trying to manage expectations for the fourth overall pick going in,
00:23and he's going to lump them in with everybody.
00:25You asked me about Milton Williams, I'll give you the same answer.
00:27You asked me about, he didn't say this, but Morgan, Moses, Garrett, Bradbury, I'm going to give you the same answer.
00:33It's probably more what he was doing, which is, I'd say, you know, it's a low bar, but it's a refreshing change from Mayo a year ago, for instance.
00:41Yeah, it sort of, like, goes back and forth, because Belichick famously would always do that.
00:45You'd ask him about one player, and then he'd go big, big picture group, and you're like, all right, well, that's not really what I asked, but okay, fair enough.
00:52And then Mayo, obviously a little bit different, and then Brable.
00:54But I think, you know, you don't want to have the ups and downs in camp with your number four pick, because there's going to be moments where, so, if he has a great practice, you're not going to say, he's all set, nothing else to work on.
01:05Like, this guy's locked and loaded as a tackle.
01:08Or the opposite's not true either.
01:09Like, if he goes and has a horrible practice, you're like, oh, he's a guard.
01:13He's a guard.
01:13Like, you're just taking all these practices, kind of stacking them all on top of each other.
01:17And, yeah, I think he's just, that's how he feels like he's going to have to coach this guy and all the guys on the team, kind of setting the tone here early.
01:25Makes sense.
01:26I've not seen any news on Christian Gonzalez yet.
01:30Players are talking, coming off the field.
01:31I wouldn't expect anything, by the way.
01:32No.
01:32I'm just trying to monitor and see if we have any news or updates on Christian Gonzalez.
01:37Has anybody talked to him?
01:37Is he in good spirits?
01:39After he hobbled off earlier today, spiked his helmet.
01:41I mean, again, not to be repetitive, but it is the big story today.
01:46He's the best player on the team.
01:47As we illustrated over and over and over again this offseason, he's the only player regarded as elite by the league.
01:54You know, Jeremy Fowler did this great series that he does every year.
01:57It's the fourth or fifth installment he's done over the last half decade.
02:00And it's coaches, executives, scouts.
02:02Gonzalez was the only top ten player at his position in the league.
02:05Yeah.
02:06Some guys got votes, honorable mentions like Hunter Henry, Robert Spillane, Carlton Davis.
02:10He's the only elite player they have.
02:12And the first day the pads come on, he's not out there.
02:15And so you don't want to go hyperbolic and freak out and say the season is over.
02:18But that's about as poor of a start as you could get the first day in pads losing your only elite player.
02:24Yeah.
02:24It's really between, you know, Gonzalez and then because of the position and what's behind him,
02:30Drake May are like the two guys that would be the most jarring.
02:34Right?
02:34Like everybody else, it's bad.
02:36Like any other starter, I mean.
02:37It's bad.
02:38But you're like, well, it's football.
02:39No team goes through the whole season without any injuries.
02:42But you're one dynamic elite player who, as an aside, is a year away from potentially a massive, massive payday.
02:49That was the topic last week.
02:51I was thinking about this too.
02:52I was thinking back to that weird Vrabel comment where he's like, well, you got to maximize their earning potential
02:57and get them to buy in from the team.
02:58Like, if he's already, and this is background, if he's already a little iffy about his contract,
03:04which Vrabel volunteered, if he's already a little iffy about his contract, I don't know,
03:09how quick is he going to come back from any, what we'd imagine is like a soft tissue type of injury?
03:13Yeah, but flip side would be best ability.
03:15You're not going to make any money if you're not out there.
03:16Right.
03:17Fair.
03:17You got to still play the majority of the game.
03:19But I would just say, a guy who's already got his contract on the mind, let's see how quickly he's coming back from this.
03:24Let's see what he looks like when he comes back from this.
03:26Like, that's worth, I'm not making any predictions on it, but that's worth following when he's back out there.
03:31No, it is deflating, though, because when you start every camp or every discussion for like a preseason or a training camp,
03:37it's always with the caveat, like, what are you looking for?
03:40It's like, all right, we'll get through healthy, and then this, right?
03:42And then it's like all the other stuff that you can actually really talk about.
03:45And so, what, practice number five, first one with full pads, and you're already down Gonzalez, that's tough.
03:52And on top of, we don't really know what's going on with Carlton Davis.
03:55Carlton Davis was another one of their big signings.
03:57It makes this great cornerback duo.
04:00He was on the NFI list, then he was there, and then now he's not again.
04:04So, there could very well be a perfectly good excuse, and Mike Vrabel knows what it is, and he's not concerned.
04:09But just from the outside, we're watching him not be out there going up against his receivers.
04:13Gonzalez goes down middle of practice.
04:15So, now all of these receivers, a lot of them fighting for a spot on the roster,
04:20are going up against the third, fourth, fifth, sixth string corners now for the team.
04:25No, and I would say that's, A, a bad sign for the defense, and as you pointed out,
04:29not a great sign for the receivers either trying to get in the work,
04:31although Kayshawn Booty was making some catches against Christian Gonzalez before he left earlier today.
04:37Some more takeaways.
04:38I'm just reading here from the other beat writers.
04:40Mike Reese said his initial thought after the Patriots' fifth practice and the first in full pads.
04:45He said Keon White versus Will Campbell is a battle.
04:49White gets the better of Campbell in the first one-on-one drills.
04:51We were reading some of this from Phil Perry earlier today.
04:53Went wide, pull, and ripped him to the ground.
04:55Campbell seems to hold his ground more versus White in the 11s.
05:00Phil Perry says this as well, wrapping up day five first and pads.
05:04He says, focus was the run game.
05:06Some good hard running from Stevenson, Gibson, and Travion Henderson.
05:09More on Henderson in a moment.
05:11Thought Will Campbell, Cole Strange, and Jared Wilson all got good push as run blocker at times.
05:16However, we did have a couple of fumbles in 11-on-11s.
05:20Josh Dobbs and Travion Henderson had a botched exchange, which was recovered by Marcellus Dial,
05:24your guy, Keefe.
05:25You noticed him standing out earlier today.
05:27He flashed.
05:28We told you Wilson and May had a fumbled snap as well.
05:32Well, it sounds like at one point, Henderson also was kind of worked out and sat down after that fumble.
05:40Here you go, Callahan.
05:41Henderson fumbled late and was pulled for a couple of reps.
05:44So we were talking earlier about the rookie class.
05:46Orlovsky had some real complimentary things to say about that.
05:49Yeah, you could pour some water on it today.
05:50Maybe a little bit of water poured on the rookie class.
05:52That's true.
05:53Yeah, but I think that's kind of inevitable, right?
05:56I think if you look around the league, even the top guys, I'm sure the first couple of practices,
06:00you're going to have your ups and downs.
06:02But, yeah, there's two possible wide-ranging outcomes with just the top three picks.
06:09Even if you want to go into the top four picks with Wilson, he could be a starting left guard,
06:13starting center, or maybe he's your first guy off the bench or something along those lines.
06:18But Henderson's another one to watch specifically because I wonder if he has a really, really good camp,
06:25does that push a decision on Ramondre Stevenson?
06:30Stevenson, by the way, if we're being fair, Stevenson is the first guy through every rep for the back.
06:33Same way Diggs is for the receivers.
06:35He's first up in 11s.
06:36He's first up in all the individual drills.
06:38So they're treating him like he's the starter.
06:41Yeah, and maybe Vrabel's saying, you know what?
06:43You have a clean slate.
06:44You didn't fumble for me.
06:45We're starting over.
06:47Just straight skill-wise and what they've accomplished in the league,
06:52considering Henderson's a rookie,
06:53Ramondre Stevenson should be a better running back than Antonio Gibson.
06:57Right?
06:58He should be a guy that gets more carries, more touches.
07:01But obviously last year was a down year for him.
07:03There's the contract aspect of it, too.
07:06But you're right.
07:07There's no tell.
07:08There's no early sign.
07:09If he's leading all the drills, they view him as the clear-cut number one guy.
07:12And look, all the guys are mixing in with the ones.
07:14But he is first up.
07:15But when they go to team stuff,
07:16Gibson, Stevenson, and Henderson are all getting reps with Drake May.
07:20But Stevenson is the first guy.
07:22Yeah.
07:23We'll get to May in one moment.
07:25Daniels has all the numbers today.
07:26Drake May, five out of six.
07:27Dobbs, two out of two.
07:28Sounds high.
07:29Ben Woolridge, two out of three.
07:32He noted it was a lot of focus on the red zone and the run game.
07:34So not a ton of passes here today.
07:36They did a lot of deep throwing on Saturday,
07:38where I think May was eight for 17.
07:40Some inaccurate throws, but also a lot of big plays down the field.
07:43Looking at May today, what jumped out, if anything?
07:46Not much, really.
07:47And I think probably a lot of it was close in goal line situations.
07:51So it was like, all right, is there separation from the receivers or not?
07:54He definitely got pressured a few times, right?
07:57So he's got to – that's why –
07:59That to me is what I think jumps out.
08:00The pressure.
08:01He's constantly having to step up or roll one way or the other,
08:04which, look, he's very mobile.
08:06That's a strength.
08:07But you'd love to see him be able to stand in there on some of these reps
08:10and not have to reset his feet and reset the pocket.
08:12Yeah, but these are also tricky because you know they're not going to hit you.
08:17So you're like, do I stand in?
08:19And then, like, I don't know.
08:20Like, I feel like it's tough for the quarterback when it's not live
08:22because are there times where he would actually scramble
08:25and pick up some yards?
08:26Are there times where he knows he's going to take a hit
08:28and he can wait that one extra second and try to free open a receiver?
08:32Because you'll notice what happens is the team –
08:34the both sides go full go, and then they kind of close in on the quarterback,
08:38and then those guys completely slow down.
08:40He might make, like, one half jog and then throw.
08:43And we were talking about that digs completion.
08:45Same thing.
08:46Secondary kind of pulls off a dig.
08:48So it's like it goes in the books as a completion, but you're like,
08:51I don't know.
08:51If that was a real game, that's a good point.
08:53That could have been a sack.
08:54It could have been a personal foul.
08:56It could have been all kinds of things.
08:57The five for six goes down as just a completion to digs.
09:00But you're right.
09:00That's one where he would have got his block knocked off specifically.
09:02But I think, you know, even with digs really being kind of, you know,
09:06up and down overall, I would say the offensive line still seems like the thing
09:10that sticks out the most that needs the most help or is the weakest position.
09:15And then that is, you know, directly impacts what Drake May is able to do.
09:19It does seem like digs has had a little case of the drop sees the last couple days.
09:23He had one today in drills, not in the 11-on-11.
09:27And he had a couple over the weekend.
09:28Apparently we weren't here on Saturday, but he had a couple over the weekend,
09:30so something to monitor.
09:32Bedard says the offense finished strong.
09:35May and Dobbs threw touchdowns on the final red zone drives.
09:38He said Marcello's dial was next up at corner and made the most of his opportunity,
09:42especially against the run.
09:42That's, again, your guy, Keefe.
09:44Campbell lost the one-on-one rep to Keon White.
09:46We were talking about Wilson won his one-on-one and continued to get good reps
09:50at left guard and center.
09:52We saw him mixing in a little bit at right guard on Friday and over the weekend.
09:55Looks like it was more just at left guard and center today.
09:58Giardi says that the run defense was Williams, Tonga, and White in particular a handful.
10:05He said that said, he thought Will Campbell had good moments as a run blocker.
10:08That was kind of the book on him again coming out.
10:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:10He's going to struggle more with his length in the passing game than in the run game,
10:13where he's more of a mauler.
10:15He said cornerbacks held up after Gonzalez left with an injury.
10:18Austin, Dial, and Jones as the nickel corner.
10:21That's probably a bad sign for the receivers.
10:23If those guys are holding up, that's probably not a great sign for the receivers.
10:28He also said Calavon Chasen.
10:30His name has popped up quite a bit in the first few days of camp.
10:32He was a former very high pick by the Jaguars.
10:35Yep.
10:35Then went to the Raiders.
10:36Yeah, 20th, I think, right?
10:37Somewhere up there.
10:38And is now here.
10:39He remained a handful, Giardi said.
10:41He was good in shorts, good in pads today, and fast off the edge.
10:46One other note, if you want this, Keith?
10:47Yeah, please.
10:48You've been watching on the skinny uprights a little closer than me.
10:50I have.
10:51It's something about it.
10:52It's very distracting to me.
10:54Kicker Parker Romo?
10:56I thought he had three names.
10:57I thought he had a.
10:57Yeah, he does.
10:58Well, yeah.
10:58Is it John Parker Romo?
10:59What is it?
11:00Andrew Callahan's like Parker Romo.
11:02Yeah, what's his name?
11:03What's 37 over there, if you could look that up?
11:05What do you got?
11:06I thought it was John Parker Romo.
11:08I think you might be right.
11:09Six of six on field goal attempts, kicking between 33 and 52.
11:12Is that right?
11:14Says Parker Romo on the roster.
11:15Really?
11:16No kicks yet for Boragallis.
11:18This is with Callahan updating it in real time.
11:20He says, is the kicker competition heating up?
11:22That would be kicker competition.
11:24They burned another pick on a sixth round.
11:26How many kickers have they taken in the sixth round the last couple of years?
11:28Well, they took Roarwasser in the fifth.
11:30You're right.
11:31I'm sorry.
11:31I thought he was a higher pick.
11:32I already forgot the name.
11:33Who was the bum who hit the kick against Denver a couple of years ago?
11:35Like the one kick he made all year?
11:36What was even that guy's name?
11:37Chad Ryland.
11:39Chad Ryland.
11:40Good pull.
11:41They're using all these picks on kickers, and now you have a kicking competition with
11:45it is John Parker Romo?
11:47John Parker Romo.
11:48No thanks.
11:49Yikes.
11:50I mean, don't just hand the kid the job, but another blown pick on a kicker?
11:54That would be a nightmare.
11:54Yeah, I don't love that.
11:56Give this kid time.
11:57He's figuring it out.
11:58He was good from 54, I think, on the skinny uprights.
12:03Well, this is it.
12:03I'll take that as a win.
12:04This is your eyes.
12:05Which, again, is...
12:06Oh, no.
12:06Maybe that was Parker Wilson.
12:08Maybe I got the wrong guy.
12:09Maybe I...
12:09Yeah, no.
12:11Good point.
12:12I was watching the ball, so good point.
12:13I might have gotten the wrong kicker.
12:14Oh, boy.
12:15We got a real dogfight on our hands here.
12:17It's a kicking competition.
12:18Kicker battle.
12:19Here in full pads.
12:20Best battle.
12:21Mount Rushmore.
12:22Oh, Mount Rushmore.
12:22Mount Rushmore the battles?
12:24Mount Rushmore Monday the camp battles.
12:27Okay.
12:27Kicker.
12:28Kickers.
12:29Number one with a bullet.
12:30Wide out.
12:30Yo, wide out.
12:31Like Bourne Booty.
12:32Bourne Booty, who makes the roster?
12:34Assuming Matt Collins ever emerges off PUP, that is a good battle.
12:37What about, like, Bradbury Strange Wilson, who's...
12:41Strange is losing that one.
12:43Like center battle, maybe?
12:44Yeah, but throw that on the...
12:45Center guard.
12:46Throw that on the Mount Rushmore, for sure.
12:48And probably...
12:49And then the backs?
12:50Oh, yeah.
12:50Put the backs on there?
12:51Yeah.
12:52Safety's probably a good one, too.
12:53Safety's not bad.
12:54It's a lot of battles.
12:54We played the clip earlier when Bedard was like, man, it was great that...
12:58Drake May rolled out and hit Pop Douglas for that big play over the weekend, but lost in
13:02the shuffle a little bit as Duggar gave up another play over his head in the passing
13:05game.
13:06Yeah.
13:06And he's a guy who I don't think is secure on the roster.
13:09I'd probably wager on him making it.
13:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:11But I don't think he's a lock by any means.
13:13617-779-7937.
13:15All your thoughts, Patriots training camp with Christian Gonzalez.
13:18Hobbling off the field earlier today, spike in his helmet.
13:21In trail coverage on Stephon Diggs.
13:23That's the headline today.
13:25We'll continue to hammer that home along with all the other updates out of the first day
13:28in pads for the Pats.
