00:0040s, 50s, right into the 60s, in the last century, it was still being upheld that cigarette
00:14smoking keeps you vital and active and it was a popular belief that cigarette smoking
00:31specifically among men is a driver of masculinity as well.
00:44When it started becoming evident that cigarette smoking has a whole range of very very harmful
00:57effects, when cancer cases started piling up.
01:07Then the tobacco industry started sponsoring lot of so-called scientific reports that would
01:21say that there is nothing wrong with tobacco and that cigarettes are not at all harmful
01:25for human beings.
01:28And they kept up the propaganda for another 10-20 years, almost till the end of 70s.
01:42They kept trying it till it became ridiculously impossible for them to keep pressing on with
01:54their claims.
01:57So why will they not do it?
02:01Their money is at stake.
02:02Greed can make man do anything.
02:05Greed can make man present any kind of pseudo-scientific evidence which is nothing but blatant cheating
02:12and lying.
02:13Most of the reports that still try to defend meat consumption are sponsored by groups having
02:23vested interests.
02:25Take the case of climate change as well.
02:30That climate change is happening and there is a clear scientific basis for it.
02:37It was evident not today but even four decades back.
02:44But then the fossil fuel industry kept sponsoring report after report that said firstly that there
02:51is no climate change.
02:57Then they said oh there probably is climate change but it does not have to do with human activity.
03:05Soul warming they said is not anthropogenic.
03:09Even today they come up with something or the other that would confuse the population.
03:21That's their objective.
03:22They say to not let it become certain, absolutely certain, conclusively and finally certain that
03:31climate change is happening and man is responsible for it.
03:37If you can instill some doubt in the mind of the compulsive cigarette smoker regarding whether or not cigarettes
03:59are harmful.
04:02You have given him a lease of fresh hope.
04:06He will say you know it is not yet quite proven that cigarettes are harmful.
04:13So I feel licensed and entitled to continue with my cigarettes till a final proof is established.
04:24That's the little ray of hope that the addicted and the greedy mind needs.
04:33The issue has to be closed, sealed and stamped.
04:42It is final that meat eating is stupid from all kinds of reasons.
04:57And they will not let that final conclusion arrive soon.
05:02It will arrive.
05:03Just as it arrived in the case of cigarette smoking.
05:09Just as it finally had to be accepted by the tobacco industry that cigarette smoking is highly
05:17injurious.
05:18Today you see on cigarette packs, not only is there a warning but there is a gruesome warning.
05:28There is that terrible face, cancer struck.
05:39It was unimaginable that the tobacco industry would agree to it four decades back.
05:46Today they have had to agree because now there is popular scientific consensus.
05:52But they agreed only after claiming millions of lives by spreading misinformation.
06:06Same with climate change.
06:08Now everybody is coming around to agree that yes, there is climate change and climate change
06:15is due to human activity.
06:20But they are trying to delay the inevitable.
06:25They are trying to delay that there would be ultimately a consensus.
06:30That is also what the meat industry is trying now.
06:33Fifty years back, it was the tobacco industry, two decades back and still it is the fossil fuel
06:46industry and we have the meat industry which will continue definitely with its propaganda and
07:00lies right till the end of the next decade maybe.
07:13They will evidently have to agree and submit.
07:17But then by that time they would have caused just too much and probably irreversible damage.
07:28The thing is to speeden the process.
07:32The thing is to bring it more swiftly and more deeply into the popular consciousness that
07:45what meat eating really is.
